Ferndale Schools Third Graders
Receive Free Dictionaries
dy and Roosevelt received free dictionaries this
week from Operation: Kid Equip (OKE). The Dictionary
Project, as OKE has named it, distributes
dictionaries specifically written for third graders
who are at the dividing line between learning to
read and reading to learn. The Ferndale Schools
are one of the first districts in Oakland County
to receive their dictionaries which belong to the
students, not the classrooms. Through March 15,
2010, OKE is raising money to provide roughly
2,700 third graders in Oakland County with
brand new dictionaries.
Students were very excited to receive their new books (as seen in the photos
above), sharing with the founder Menachem Kniespeck that they felt, “happy,”
“excited,” and that, “someone
they didn’t know loved them.”
Operation: Kid Equip’s long term
vision is a community where
every child’s basic needs are met.
To accomplish this in the short
term they are providing school
supplies, books and dictionaries
to children who are at-risk.
To effect long-term community
improvement, they are working to
increase awareness of the issues
facing school-aged children to
help them succeed
in school
and in life. To
Peace Walk at Roosevelt
Every year Roosevelt Primary
School has a Peace
Walk to respect the work of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The walk took place today
at 2 pm. The students create
posters, banners, and
artwork, all in honor of
what they’ve learned about
peace and the work of MLK.
At the end of the walk, students filed into the
Gym and sang, “We Shall Overcome,” together.
Each second and third grade class wrote new
lyrics to the song, after thinking about what it
meant to live in peace and treat everyone with
no prejudice. Some of the lyrics are as follows:
“We should all be responsible. We will talk it out.
We will be courageous. We should care for others.
We should all be fair. Nothing will get in our
way. We shall stick together. We shall be a family.”
Celebrate the Dream: A Success
The Ferndale Schools
Celebrate the Dream
event on Wednesday,
January 13, was an opportunity
to celebrate
Ferndale’s diversity and
remember the Dream of
Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Ferndale High
School Diversity Club,
along with the Community Relations Office, sponsored this event.
The Diversity Club students read passages of MLK’s ‘I have a
Dream’ speech, created a scavenger hunt to have all guests interact
and find similarities with each other, shared what it would be
like to have the entire world’s population shrunk into 100 people
(only one would have a college education), and prepared questions
to think about while watching the film Freedom Writers. The
event was a success, and ended with a brief discussion to reflect
on Freedom Writers.
Herb Ivory, FHS Principal, applauded the Club for their hard work,
and hopes to have them share their presentation with other
classes at FHS and perhaps the Middle School.
Two Ferndale High School students earned awards
from their Oakland Schools Technical Center classes.
Congratulations to Gerald Gandy FHS student who received an
Outstanding Student Award for Positive Work Ethic, Good Academic
Achievement in Construction Technology.
Congratulations also to Alyssa Voorhies Ferndale High School
Outstanding Student Award for Most Improved in Visual Imaging.
African Acrobats
stunts, involved the student
in the limbo and taught the
students some Swahili words:
Hakuna Matta, Simba and Raffiki
(all from Disney’s® the Lion King).

Getting Ready for
Kindergarten 2010
Roosevelt Primary School | Grades K-3
As a school family, Roosevelt Primary is committed to
providing an atmosphere conducive to early childhood
learning, teaching predictable routines, providing clear
classroom expectations, using developmentally appropriate
instruction, teaching social skills through daily conflicts,
and providing best practices in brain-based
research to help all children succeed.
Each morning, the day begins the “Brain
Smart” way with classical music playing
from the first bell until the WBEE News
is broadcast on the school-wide telecast.
The WBEE news includes the Pledge of
Allegiance, a stretch to open up the heart
for a day of learning, and then concludes
with the much-awaited Brain Tip of the Day
from Principal Dina Krause. Students enjoy
exercising to get their blood moving, brain energized and
muscles pumped for a day of learning.
Roosevelt’s Brain-Based Learning program is open to all,
and has received National and Regional recognition for
its Brain Smart Start. In 2007, the Character Education
Partnership (CEP) selected Roosevelt Primary to receive a
National Schools of Character Promising Practices Award
and the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB)
selected Roosevelt Primary to receive an Education
Excellence Award.
Roosevelt Primary has two choices for Kindergarten: Brain
Based Learning and Open Classroom. In the Open Classroom
program, students are taught individual student responsibility
and instruction revolves around project-based learning and
parent involvement is a requirement. Brain Based learning
is based on current brain research, child development
information and developmentally appropriate practices the
goal of the program is to help students learn based on their
learning style, personality and individual need. The class
is designed with the young child’s brain in mind with an
emphasis on fostering a classroom family and knowing that
love is the best motivator for learning and growth.
6
Why Choose Ferndale
Public Schools for
Kindergarten?
• Outstanding Reputation – State and national awards for
the Brain-Smart Start, 30-years of outstanding project-based
Open Classroom, and innovative leader in establishing the
Multi-Age Program.
• Focused Attention – On the whole child – both emotional
and intellectual intelligence.
• A Strong Start! Strong early academics lead to over $1-million
in college scholarships for graduating seniors each year.
Ferndale Schools are known for the outstanding performing
arts program that starts with daily instrumental music in
elementary school and has led to four State Marching Band
Championships. Athletics benefit from outstanding, recently
renovated facilities, and celebrate the successes of our
league, regional and state champions.
John F. Kennedy School | Grades K-6
Your child will be nurtured, tutored by peers, go to camp
each year, participate in virtual “trips” abroad in 1st and
2nd grade, and learn through project-based instruction. At
Kennedy, families have two Kindergarten magnet program
options: Open Classroom and Multi-Age.
The vision of John F. Kennedy School is
to ensure that all students are given the
opportunity to learn at their level, and to
be challenged to work to their maximum
potential. The vision includes teaching
differentiating learning to meet all student
needs, including special education students
and gifted students. The vision also includes
teachers working together to create a
professional learning community with staff,
students, and parents.
The Open Classroom Program has been in existence
for 30 years and is based on a philosophy that fosters
independence, promotes individual student responsibility,
stresses self-motivation and self-confidence, and provides
instruction in a project-based environment. This program
reflects a combined partnership between school and family.
A parent participation agreement is required upon entry
and each family is asked to volunteer a minimum of 40
hours a year.
The Multi-Age Program provides flexibility of instruction
to meet individual needs of each child, promotes
responsibility for self and learning, stresses group skills
and cooperation, and delivers instruction in a multi-age
environment. Children in this program are grouped in math
and reading by their developmental level as opposed to
their chronological level. By regrouping students in varying
ways, the program allows students to accelerate as they
are ready, and helps them reach their maximum potential.
Parent participation is strongly encouraged.

January 7, 2010
Dear Parent/Caregiver:
The Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) has noted more children are being diagnosed with
chickenpox than is expected for this time of year in Oakland County. Most of the children
being diagnosed with chickenpox currently are children who have received a single dose of
the varicella vaccine. Although chickenpox is usually not a serious illness, it often causes
children to miss days at school while they have a rash, and parents may miss work to stay at
home with their ill child. In some children, chickenpox may cause more serious illness, leading
to a stay in the hospital or in some very extreme cases, death.
The varicella vaccine can prevent chickenpox (caused by the varicella virus) and is safe and
effective for children who are 12 months of age or older. The varicella vaccine series consists of
two doses given at least 3 months apart (at least 4 weeks apart for persons 13 years of age or
older). A single dose of the varicella vaccine does not provide adequate protection against
chickenpox. A second dose is required for full protection.
If your child has not already had chickenpox nor received 2 shots of the varicella vaccine, we
recommend that he/she receive the vaccine. The vaccine, if given 3- 5 days after exposure to
chickenpox disease, can either help to prevent illness or reduce its severity. Your child’s doctor
or OCHD can assist in vaccinating children who are not protected against chickenpox.
As of January 1, 2010, Michigan law now requires all children entering kindergarten, entering 6 th
grade, or children in any grade changing school districts to have documentation of receiving 2
doses of varicella vaccine.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s doctor or OCHD at 800-848-5533.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Forzley, R.S., M.P.A. Julie Vaishampayan, M.D., M.P.H.
Help the FAB Support Fine Arts
Programs!
Purchase a Holiday Market gift card from the FAB and use it to make
all of your purchases at the store. Holiday Market will donate 5% of
the money you spend to the FAB!
Here’s How It Works:
Purchase a $20 Holiday Market gift card from FAB.
Use this card when you shop at Holiday Market and 5% of the $20 will be
donated back to the FAB.
Reload your card anytime you shop at Holiday Market with whatever amount of
money you plan to spend and 5% of your bill continues to be donated to FAB.
You can reload your card using cash or a credit card, and it can be done right at
the check-out register before the cashier begins ringing up your order. It’s that
easy!
If you currently have a Holiday Market owner loyalty card, you can use both
cards when you make a purchase. Thus, you still earn your personal reward
