FHS Senior surprised with Study Abroad Scholarship!
FHS Senior Katie Jahn (second from right) was surprised this week, with an in-person announcement
that she had won the Congress-Bundestag youth Exchange Scholarship to attend school in Germany
later this year. The award was presented by Barb Kikka (left), the Senior Field Director from youth For
Understanding USA. youth For Understanding, which administers these scholarships in Michigan,
presented the award during German class. Kikka told Katie that this honor “would change her life
forever.” Katie’s father, ray (second from left), and FHS Principal Lisa Williams (right) were there to
congratulate her. Katie has been waiting to hear if she will receive this scholarship, which will extend
her high schools studies to a fifth year, deferring college for one more year. “i’m so excited! i was so
anxious this whole month (waiting to hear back),” says Katie. “i’m excited to go to Germany and learn
the culture.” Her father, ray Jahn, is excited, too, and doesn’t mind deferring college for this great
opportunity. “She’ll be a much better student as a result,” says ray. This Scholarship, sponsored by
the U.S. State Department, covers the full cost of Katie’s year abroad. The program begins in early
August with a month-long initial immersion program which will help her better learn the language
and culture of Germany. it includes a year at a German academic high school and side trips, including
meetings with government leaders in Berlin. it ends 11 months later with a visit to Washington,
D.C. to meet with government leaders. Katie, who has been studying German at FHS for four years,
will depart in late summer and return the following summer. Congratulations, Katie!
