FHS receives North
Central Accreditation
Congratulations to Principal Lisa
Williams and her entire Ferndale High
School staff on earning North Central
Accreditation (NCA). NCA Accreditation
is granted to schools following a review,
evaluation and endorsement process
that ended this week with an external
review team site visit to FHS.
Ms. Williams says the importance of
earning NCA Accreditation is that “Colleges
will look at our students’ transcripts
and know our graduates have been well
prepared for college success.” She adds,
“This is external validation that we are
a high quality high school.” One of the
review team’s conclusions praised “powerful
practices” at FHS. The international
NCA protocol promotes student learning
and effectiveness.
UHS Teacher competed in historic Boston Marathon
University High School math teacher Leslie Handyside participated in the
2013 Boston Marathon, finishing at 2:08 p.m., approximately 40 minutes
before tragedy changed the memory of the day forever.
Leslie had run four prior Detroit Marathons. She was invited to participate
in the Boston Marathon after two qualifying races. She said in Boston she had
an excellent race and finished in 3:42:49. Running with a friend, Leslie arranged to
pass her family at Mile 22, where they left via the subway and met up with her later.
She says, “The Marathon is an amazing
experience. I am so grateful my seven family
members were not personally affected. I’m so
grateful, and I’m so heartbroken.”
Handyside was among 483 Michigan runners
in the race that included 23,336 athletes
from around the world. Congratulations, Leslie!
