FGNA Board Report
by Dwight Pargee, President
Dear Colleagues,
The Feldenkrais Guild ® of North America (FGNA)
Board of Directors identifies priorities annually. These
priorities are derived from member input as well as staff
feedback. The Board’s priorities set the basis for FGNA’s
operating budget for the following year. As per our Policy
Governance operating model, our priorities reflect the
most essential work of the organization and serve as clear
implementation instructions for our Executive Director.
I will outline the primary guiding priorities that reflect the
Board of Directors’ work for 2011:
1. Develop a vision and programs for organizational
Continuing Competence
• Change present CE policy to reflect the philosophical
orientation of the Continuum of Competence and develop
online Continuing Competence resources
It is the vision of FGNA that all certified practitioners
be highly competent in their practice of the Feldenkrais
Method ® . One of the defining characteristics of
professional practice is the capacity to reflect on action
so as to engage in a process of continuous learning
or “Reflective Practice.” This involves continuously
expanding and refining one’s professional knowledge,
abilities, and attitudes. In doing this process,
practitioners will spontaneously note areas of expertise
and underdevelopment within their practice, then seek
out upcoming learning opportunities (e.g. advanced
trainings, workshops, study groups, supervision,
mentoring). Implicit in this is that practitioners shape
a learning plan, identify and allocate the required
resources (e.g. time, money, teachers) and keep aware
of real constraints.
2
2011
Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed citizens can
change the world; indeed, it’s the
only thing that ever has.
-Margaret Mead
• Support an effective process for creating a competencybased
certification
The Board sees that training is not isolated but an
integral part of marketing the Method. Ideas about
assessing competency and separating certification
from graduation have been discussed and promoted
for at least a decade. The Board sees benefits for the
profession and the community through pursuing this
direction.
We created a special task force to facilitate moving
towards the separation of certification from graduation.
A clearer certification process could allow more
options and creativity in training methods and provide
better legal protections for the trainers and the Guild
as well as for students. We want to find a way to show
how we make assessments and introduce competency,
in some form, into the Certification process.
• Support FGNA staff development and competency -
including employee policies, salary, and benefits
• Develop policy governance competency as a Board of
Directors so that we continue to improve our functioning,
communication and efficiency.
2. Support practitioner development and competency
• Annual Conference
(continued on page 3)

...FGNA Board
3
(continued from page 2)
After celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Amherst
training by having a wonderful conference held at the
same site, Hampshire College, much of the last half
of 2011 was dedicated to planning the 2012 Esther
Thelen Research Symposium and Feldenkrais Method
Annual Conference.
The theme is “Embodying Neuroscience: The
Feldenkrais Method in Human Development,
Performance and Health.” Besides practitioners, the
conference is being promoted to scientists, researchers,
scholars and professionals in the fields of human
development, performance, and health.
• Regional meetings and advanced trainings
• Feldenkrais Journal
Issue #23 was, once again, one of excellent quality and
content. Many thanks to the authors, volunteers of the
Journal committee and staff for making this possible.
• Video recordings
• FEFNA Bookstore
• FGNA and FEFNA publications
• CORR Feldenkrais Week
• Creating and supporting mentoring opportunities
3. Develop an attractive and technically capable website
that allows:
• Members to change their information online
• Member information to be located quickly and easily
• Improved and increased online visibility and public
access to information on the Feldenkrais Method ®
• A place where both members and the public will want
to go, and regularly return, to keep connected to the Guild
and the Feldenkrais Method
• Archiving of reference documents for members to
provide history and awareness of Guild activities
• A structure for dialogue--member forums and public
• A structure for Continuing Competence--articles,
webinars, online courses, etc.
By setting a mandate for developing the website, the
Board sends a clear signal that the website is a priority for
time and resources (staff as well as volunteer).
In 2011, we moved ahead with the design and
implementation phase of a new website, as well as a
complete reconfiguration of our database. Though the
project is not yet completed, we are closer to having a
new vehicle for communicating with our membership and
the rest of the world.
4. Continue to improve organizational viability and
financial stability
2011
• Develop a membership program to retain current
members and increase members
• Revise and update policies to support policy governance
• Strengthen and clarify internal organizational
relationships (FGNA staff, BOD, CORR, FGNA
contractors, TAB, Training Community)
The Board recognizes that historically there has been
insufficient communication between the Board and
the other components of the Guild. We need to foster
communication between all interests, from students to
beginning practitioners, to long time practitioners, to
those in the training community. We want to find ways
that make it easier for people to relate to, and with, the
Guild and with each other.
• Strengthen and clarify external organizational
relationships
• Continue to support membership in regards to state
legislation and regulation
Attaining financial stability for the Guild was a goal of the
Board in the past and continued to be in 2011. Thanks
to careful financial management in the past three years,
the Guild has emerged from debt. Our financial stability
improves our functional ability to provide member
services and carry out the organizational goals of FGNA.
As of December 31, 2011, FGNA reported year-to-date
income and assets of $508,419 and expenses of $630,644
(continued on page 4)

...FGNA Board
(continued from page 3)
against income of $610,219.
5. Strengthen and clarify intellectual property rights
We want to clarify and promote the usefulness, value,
and power of service marks that are a primary asset of our
organization. This includes:
• Service mark and trademark applications
• Enforcement
• Domain names
• Copyrights
• State and federal regulation
One of the benefits of strengthening our intellectual
property rights is that doing so helps us in the
regulatory arena. In 2011, our greatest success
in terms of regulation was the passage of a bill
and administrative rules in Oregon exempting the
practice of the Feldenkrais Method, by Guild Certified
Feldenkrais Practitioners cm , from regulation under the
massage therapy statute. Special thanks are due to
volunteers Deborah Skell and Ahma Lia Bride for their
active roles in this effort. We also thank volunteer
Carole Bucher, who stepped up to the plate to help
defeat a bill in Nevada that would have inappropriately
regulated our work.
4
The practice of the Feldenkrais Method is currently
exempt from regulation under massage statutes in
over twenty states and the District of Columbia.
Our achievements in this area would not have
been possible without the tireless efforts of Michael
Purcell, who stepped down from his role as National
Regulation Coordinator in 2011, after over fifteen years
of dedicated service.
6. Promote and support sustainable volunteerism
This quote from Seth Godin clearly articulates our vision
of creating a sustainable volunteer organization:
If you make a difference, people will gravitate
to you. They want to engage, to interact and to
get more involved. If you make a difference,
you also make a connection. You interact with
people who want to be interacted with and you
make changes that people respect and yearn for.
Art can’t happen without someone who seeks to
make a difference. This is your art, it’s what you
do. You touch people or projects and change
them for the better.
Some ways that we all can act as an organization to
achieve this are:
• Nurturing the bright spots in our diverse community
2011
• Showing that there is value in membership
• Improving coordination between staff projects and
CORR/Volunteer projects to better serve members
• Using member surveys to determine what members
value, what they have enthusiasm for, and where they feel
discontent; so we can see what we need to do about it.
• Providing ongoing linkages to student members
• Supporting projects that engage practitioners
I hope that this has given you a clear overview of what
FGNA has been doing in 2011. Please share with us the
sense that right now is one of those moments when we are
influencing the future growth of the Feldenkrais Method.
The North American Training Accreditation Board
(NATAB) is established by the FGNA Board of
Directors to:
1. Uphold and further the international standards of
the Feldenkrais Method ® of somatic education through
recommending policy and changes in policy for
accreditation of training, certification of trainers and
assistant trainers, and other related policies.
2. Review for approval applications for accrediting
training programs and certifying trainers and assistant
trainers, and approve other related positions (such as
trainer candidate.)
In striving to fill these roles in 2011, the NATAB
volunteers met by phone approximately twice monthly,
Conference. In addition, the Chairperson (or a substitute
member) met monthly by phone with members of the
European and Australian training accreditation boards,
to coordinate the actions of the three TABs. (Training
policy recommendations, trainer candidate and trainer
applications require agreement of all three TABs, while
training accreditation and assistant trainer applications are
decided by each TAB alone.)
CORR Report
by Jane Johnston, Chair
The Feldenkrais Guild® of North America is divided
into ten different regions and the Council of Regional
Representatives (CORR) is comprised of a representative
from each region. The regions are Canada, Eastern,
Midwest, New England, New York, Northern CA/N.
Nevada, Northwest, Southeast, Southern CA/S Nevada,
and Southwest/Rocky Mountains. Find the states covered
by each region at:
www.feldenkrais.com/profession/fgna/about_fgna/
Here is the current line up of Regional Representatives:
Canada: Rosa Murnahan
Eastern: Jane Johnston
Midwest: Stacy Grill-Ewing, Russell Hall
New England: Josh Schreiber Shalem
New York: Barbara Abramson, Nancy Judson
Northern CA/Northern Nev: Paulette Dolin
Northwest: Jennifer Yagos
Southeast: Brian Baraszu, Tara Carney
Southern CA/NV/HI: Aviva Field, Bridget Quebodeaux
Southwest/Rocky Mountain: Tammy Rosen Wilbur
Many terms were up in June 2011, so starting July 2011
we had several new regional representatives join our
group. Chrish Kresge joined our calls as liaison to the
Board of Directors and Susan Marshall also attended in
her capacity as FGNA Executive Director.
CORR meets about eight times a year. Generally, we meet
by phone for two hours every two months, with an extra
meeting before Feldenkrais® Week, plus a two day inperson
meeting at the annual Conference. We meet with
the BOD twice a year, once by phone, and once during
the annual Conference.
The job of the regional representatives has many facets,
but is primarily to act as a conduit for information
between the region’s members and FGNA, its governing
bodies, as well as members of other regions. This includes
providing an accounting of all monies spent and held,
making a budget for the region and putting it out for
vote by members, holding elections in a timely manner,
hosting a regional Annual Meeting, coordinating regional
activities, publishing an accurate inventory of each
region’s library and other equipment, sending out periodic
regional newsletters, attending CORR meetings, hosting
the regional lunch at the annual Conference, hosting one
event at Conference, facilitating Feldenkrais Week events
in their region, and assisting with the membership drive.
Feldenkrais Week
For the second annual Feldenkrais Week, CORR made
the following items available to all members: posters,
press releases, sample letters for Official Recognition
of Feldenkrais Week, invitations for students, sample
8
2011
The Council of Regional Representatives
is a creative force within FGNA and
is a forum for communication that
fosters a sense of community and
encourages member participation.
-CORR Mission Statement
letter to the mayor or other government official, three
flyers, a Feldenkrais Week Facebook page, a Yahoogroup
to network with colleagues, coordination with other
colleagues around the world, and a website to list
individual events. Also available were templates of
coupons for classes and a downloadable ATM® lesson. All
of these items were available to FGNA members.
Volunteering
We spent much time talking about volunteerism during
our CORR meetings and how to increase the number
of volunteers and thus decrease the amount of work
that each volunteer must do. Each region should have
a representative, or better yet two co-representatives, a
secretary, a treasurer, a newsletter editor and a librarian.
Some regions are operating with many fewer officers.
Please volunteer to help your region. FGNA is our
organization and we need support from every member!
Meetings
After the Annual Conference in July 2011, CORR held its
only in-person meeting of the year. We met for two days,
including a half day with the Board of Directors. During
the CORR meeting, we made plans for the rest of 2011
and worked on getting everyone comfortable with Google
Docs and Yahoo Groups so that we could communicate
among ourselves more efficiently.
Achievements and Goals
One of CORR’s goals is to increase the visibility of the
Feldenkrais Method®. Each year CORR votes to have group
projects endorsed and paid for collectively. In 2011,
Feldenkrais Week was one of those projects. Another one
was to write ads and fund their publication on Google.
We intended for these ads to be published in Nov-Dec
2011, during the launch of the new website. Due to
unforeseen circumstances, CORR voted to delay running
the ads and instead aired them during Feldenkrais Week
2012. Many thanks to Tammy Rosen Wilbur for writing the
ads and spearheading this advertising effort. We hope to
expand this advertising in 2012.

FEFNA Board Report
by Dwight Pargee, Board President
The Feldenkrais Educational Foundation of North America
(FEFNA) is organized to promote public awareness,
support research and be a vehicle for strategic giving.
The FEFNA Research committee addresses a need in our
community to collaborate with others outside our field.
Collaborations that lead to high quality research projects
can advance the understanding of the Method and solidify
its efficacy and respectability. As this trend grows, we will
see wider adoption and use of the Feldenkrais Method in a
variety of fields.
This year, much time and effort was generously given
by the FEFNA Research Committee to the myriad
complexities of planning the upcoming 2012 Esther
Thelen Research Symposium & Feldenkrais Method ®
Conference. This program, “Embodying Neuroscience: The
Feldenkrais Method in Human Development, Performance
and Health,” is an extraordinary opportunity to present the
Feldenkrais Method to professionals who work in clinics,
private practice and in academic circles worldwide.
Dr. Esther Thelen, G.C.F.P., developmental psychologist
and director of the Infant Motor Development Laboratory
at Indiana University from 1985 until her death in
2004, made an important contribution to building this
bridge. The Esther Thelen, PhD, GCFP Research and
Education Fund carries on her legacy by putting in place
structures to continue the dialogue across disciplines.
New discoveries in the fields of human development are
being documented and we must seize these opportunities
to show correlations with the Feldenkrais Method. As
stewards of Moshe Feldenkrais’ work, it is incumbent
upon us to actively participate in the progression of
human development research.
The three objectives of the fund reflect Dr. Thelen’s
commitments to principled scientific inquiry, professional
and personal development, and translational actions that
foster societal change:
1. To provide grants for theoretically grounded research
that extends and advances the Feldenkrais Method ® .
2. To provide grants to Feldenkrais practitioners or
students in professional training programs that promote
9
of North American is a charitable
organization whose mission is to advance
human development and learning through
education and scientific research.”
-FEFNA Mission Statement
development and training in conducting quality research.
3. To provide grants for events or actions that bring
together scientists and scholars, Feldenkrais practitioners,
other professionals, policy makers, and the public for
dialogue that facilitates improvement in the function and
quality of individual lives and society.
FeldSciNet (www.feldscinet.org) was established to
provide an Internet-based vehicle to promote networking
and collaboration worldwide among members of the
Feldenkrais Method community and interested scientists,
scholars and researchers. The goal is to foster the specific
communication and coordination needed for collaborators
to generate new research projects. FeldSciNet has
approximately eighty members in eighteen countries and
continues to bring in donations.
Another one of FEFNA’s objectives is to support ways
of generating increased public awareness of the
Feldenkrais Method. FEFNA publishes the SenseAbility
newsletter and, through the bookstore, sells educational
marketing materials. FEFNA supports website design and
maintenance and the online bookstore. Additionally,
FEFNA sponsors public classes and workshops at the
Annual Conference.
The FEFNA bookstore continued to make changes large
and small throughout 2011 in order to meet customer
needs. The bookstore worked with many vendors in
the Feldenkrais community to serve up interesting and
relevant educational products at the 2011 Conference in
Amherst, Massachusetts.
The largest change was the addition of the Amherst
Training on DVD to FEFNA’s rental library available
to FGNA Members. This acquisition has proven to be
immensely popular with our membership.
The following items were added to the nonprofit
educational bookstore:
• Approach to Running Faster by Edward Yu
• Awareness Through Movement: Basic Series by Moshe
Feldenkrais
• Core Action Collection by Jae Gruenke
• Dynamic Sitting Exercises by Josef Dellagrotte
Feldenkrais Method by Moti Nativ
• Embodied Learning: Focus on Breathing by Elizabeth
Beringer
• Growing Young by Alan Questel
As of December 31, 2011, FEFNA reported year-todate
assets of $56,297 and expenses of $69,639 against
income of $47,039.
Sources of income included bookstore sales, individual
and foundation donations, as well as generous support
from FGNA.
