Hurunui District Plan Review
To Federated Farmers Members – Hurunui District
Most of you will be aware that Hurunui District Council are consulting on the review of the
District Plan, with an intention to notify a new plan in late 2013 or early 2014. The District
Plan controls what you can or can not do on your land.
Federated Farmers supports the consultative approach taken, with plenty of opportunity for
feedback on what people would like to see in the new Plan. Over 1000 landowners have
been written to personally and community drop in session and public meetings have been
held for two weeks.
Many of you will have received a letter about a significant natural area, outstanding natural
landscape/feature, heritage feature, cultural site, coastal environment zone, flood hazard
zone or other special area your land. With a new Plan the Council is able to amend these
land classifications, and has offered to do site visits to ground-truth areas that are in doubt or
incorrectly classified.
Federated Farmers supports this initiative, because updates to reflect the actual situation will
result in a Plan with more integrity and that is more useful to people in the District.
We particularly encourage anyone with areas of ‘coastal environment’ mapped on their
property to contact the Council to get better information. If you have areas defined as
‘coastal environment’ that encompass areas where the coast is not a significant influence or
if you simply don’t agree with the Council’s assessment, you may want the Council to find
out what this might mean for you, or what you can do to get the area re-assessed.
We also encourage members to contact Federated Farmers staff about the new District
Plan, updated land classifications, or the coastal environment.
You can find information on the Hurunui District Plan, including information on specific topics
and how to give feedback here.
