6. Disease control
A. New Zealand dairy herd Enzootic Bovine Leucosis (EBL) control scheme
The EBL Control Scheme continued to screen more than 50% of dairy herds per annum. The 2010/11 dairy season signified the third
consecutive year that New Zealand has successfully remained free of any evidence of EBL in the national dairy herd.
Clearly there is no indication of re-emergence of EBL due to residual pockets or by reintroduction from the beef industry. Therefore herd
monitoring levels will be reduced to between 1500 and 2000 herds in 2011/12. At the same time a review will be undertaken with
stakeholders to determine the future direction of the EBL control scheme from 2012/13 onwards.
The EBL Control Scheme is funded by Dairy NZ and operated by LIC.
