SECTION 42
SAFE CUSTODY OF STORES
42.1 The Executive Engineer is responsible to ensure that proper arrangements are made throughout
the Division for the safe custody of stores, and for their protection from deterioration and fire.
42.2 The stores will be under the strict supervision and vigilance of a Junior Engineer, who will be
particularly responsible for the safe custody of stores. At the end of each day, the locks of the stores
should be properly sealed by the Storekeeper in the presence of chowkidar, and entered in the register.
At the time of change of duty, proper handing over/taking over should be done by signing the register. The
Storekeeper should seal the locks carefully when he closes the godown at the end of the day and examine
the seal before opening the godown next time, to see that the seal has not been tampered with. If he finds
that the seal has been tampered with in his absence, he should at once bring this fact to the notice of the
higher authorities for reporting the matter to the Police. In the absence of the Storekeeper, the Junior
Engineer will discharge such functions.
42.3 On the occurrence of any loss, action against the person concerned with the upkeep of stores
should be taken promptly so as to avoid delay in obtaining evidence against persons responsible for the
loss.
