April 2013
Food and Nutrition Services has developed monthly Energy Zone articles that schools are
welcome to use in your monthly parent newsletters. Below, you will find an article for your April
newsletter.
ENERGY ZONE KIDS FITNESS CHALLENGE
Research shows children copy the behavior of adults in their life. If parents are
physically active, the children will be active too. Exercise burns calories, which assist in
maintaining ideal weight. Fit adults and children exercise 60 minutes per day.
KEEP MOVING TO STAY IN SHAPE TIPS
Plan daily family walks.
Limit television or computer time to 1 to 2 hours per day.
Make exercise fun.
Encourage play outside with other children.
Assign chores that involve activity such as cleaning or walking the dog.
Help your children find physical activities they enjoy.
Remember, making a healthy change takes time and don’t expect perfection.

Abril 2013

Important Immunization Information for Rising Sixth Graders
Tdap Immunization required for all 6th grade students
Virginia law requires that all students entering sixth-grade have a tetanus, diphtheria,
pertussis (Tdap) booster immunization prior to entry into school.
Parents of current fifth-graders should review their children's immunization records. Your
family physician or the Fairfax County Health Department Clinic will be able to assist parents
in determining whether the student is in eligible to receive the Tdap booster immunization.
Should the child not be old enough or the previous vaccine is less than five years ago, your
child must have a medical exemption from the doctor/clinic stating when he or she will receive
the TDap in order to attend school.
The Tdap booster immunizations can be obtained from your child’s physician. School
required immunizations are also available at the Fairfax County Health Department at no
charge. Documentation that your student has received this immunization is required and must
be brought to the school.
Bonnie Brae PTO
Spring Fundraiser
Boosterthon
We are excited to announce that we are once again partnering with Boosterthon for our main
PTO fundraiser of the school year—the Boosterthon Fun Run!
The Boosterthon Fun Run is a healthy alternative to traditional product sales fundraisers.
This years theme is Highway USA, the eight day program promotes fitness, leadership and
character.
Last year an amazing total of over $25,000 was raised to build an outdoor classroom. Although,
we’ve hit some snags on the way, plans are moving forward and we are confident that
our outdoor classroom will be completed this spring.
For this year, Principal Bruce has requested funds for much needed technology and upgrades
including laptops, software, iPads, digital cameras, projectors and more. Like last year, 10%
of the first collection will go directly to the classroom teachers.
Thank you for being such a wonderful group of parents! The investment you make in the lives
of our students and our school is noticed and appreciated. We look forward to seeing you at
the Boosterthon Fun Run!
BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN DATES & BASICS
The event will kick off with a 30 minute school-wide Pep on April 3rd
and will conclude with the Fun Run on April 12th
We encourage students to get pledges toward the number of laps they will run at
the Fun Run. Students will run between 25-35 laps with 35 laps being the cap.
(each lap is about 1/20 of a mile)
Connect your child to friends and family who can give a pledge
Come cheer on your child at the Boosterthon Fun Run
Every student participates in the Fun Run and receives a “Boosterthon All-Star” t-shirt, regardless of the
pledges raised.
