From From From the the Associate Associate Pastor
Pastor
We had a bit of excitement this past Sunday, shortly after 11:00 a.m. A
high pressure line on a second floor air conditioning unit ruptured, venting Freon
and setting off the fire alarm. The education buildings were evacuated as a
precaution and the fire department responded. Thankfully, the amount of Freon
did not reach dangerous levels (Freon displaces oxygen) and there were no
injuries or damage. From this experience, we learned some valuable lessons.
Let me share with you some important reminders:
♦ If the fire alarm goes off, EVACUATE THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY
IMMEDIATELY.
IMMEDIATELY
Do not assume it is a false alarm. You will be notified when and if it is safe to
go back inside.
♦ When outside, get at least 100 feet away away from the building building. building
This is for your safety and to allow first
responders unfettered access to the buildings.
♦ Parents Parents do do do not not go go through through the the the buildings buildings seeking seeking your your children children. children children Our preschool and children’s workers
will take the children outside to a safe area – they have been trained to do this. If the all-clear is
given, they will return to their classrooms. If you must seek them out, do it from outside the building
but do not take your child without letting the teacher know.
♦ Do Do not not waste waste time time gathering coats, Bibles, etc. You can get them later.
♦ If possible, use use the stairwells rather rather than the elevators elevators. elevators
Remember, we have multiple stairwells,
(two within each section between fire doors) so there is no need for everyone to crowd into one
stairwell. Be sure to help help those who have have mobility limitations limitations. limitations
I appreciate how our Sunday School leaders and deacons stepped up and assisted this past
Sunday. Some had to firmly “encourage” people to evacuate. Please don’t be offended, they have your
safety in mind. Yes, we have some improvements to make and we will do so; but with over a thousand
people on campus at any given hour on Sunday mornings, your cooperation is imperative. I am pleased
that folks remained calm and did clear the building when directed to do so. And yes, we will have the
affected AC unit fixed this week.
Summer is here... busy, busy, busy! Lord, just help us to be busy at the best
things. In my article last week I suggested what we would call intentional
change. I received several positive responses, so I know at least some people
read the article. This week I am going to encourage you to go back and read an article
in the May 23 Alabama Alabama Baptist Baptist titled The Church’s Waistline by Grace
Thorton. The article, in my opinion, took courage to address a much needed
subject. Our choices everyday effect our lives long-term and that is surely true in how we eat. “Whatever
the key reason, Baptists are the heaviest group with a 30 percent obesity rate….”, stated this article. We
do have opportunities at Fit for Life ( Co-ed exercise) Monday & Thursday 9:30 -10:30 am in the Chapel,
and Fun and Fitness Tuesday & Thursday at 7:30 am room 104. What is best for us is not necessarily
the sweetest to the tongue, but the best for my waistline. This summer let us be busy making the best
choices.
