A Moment with the Pastor
This Sunday, we will say goodbye to Debbie Conway as our Director of Preschool and
Children’s Ministries. She has served faithfully for 18 years. David Suddath, the Minister
of Education at the time, recommended we hire Debbie part-time to work with our preschoolers
and children. What a great decision it was. With Debbie’s sense of calling to
ministry and her understanding of church work, our ministry flourished under her leadership.
Not only did our Sunday School grow in her areas of responsibility, our extra ministries
such as VBS, Fall Festival, Egg-citement, and Children’s Camp became vital areas
that helped with our church growth. Many of our baptisms in the past 18 years are a direct
result of these ministry areas that Debbie and her leadership team had responsibility for.
I hope you will join us Sunday night to say thank you to Debbie. Let’s affirm her ministry with words of appreciation
and with our actions by sharing in a generous love offering. Please use the envelopes in the pew racks and
write ‘Love Offering-Debbie’ on them. We will have some special features during the evening service to highlight
her ministry followed by a reception in the Chapel.
Travis
From the Desk of the Minister of Education
March is “Meals on Wheels” month for FBC. We have been asked to provide volunteers to deliver meals to shut-ins each
weekday during the month of March. We will have a sign-up calendar outside the Adult Education office. Volunteers are asked
to report to the Gillespie Center on their assigned day between 11:15 and 11:30 a.m. to receive
instructions and the meals to deliver. This is a wonderful ministry opportunity so sign-up quickly,
the slots fill up fast.
We continue to enjoy great attendance in Sunday School and our worship services. We are
strongest as a church family when we stay connected to God and each other. But the real test
comes when we are scattered during the week – whether at home, work or school. Let’s be diligent
to glorify God in the marketplace as we do when we gather on Sundays.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
John
The Minister to Senior Adults
In my recent attendance to a men’s conference, I was impressed how friendly the men of FBC Woodstock were. I was
reminded of the importance of being a friendly church. I also was reminded that individuals must be intentional to be
friendly. To be a friendly church is work that is very important to what we do. It is work that is multi-purpose in that it is to our
attendees, as well as guests. In a large body of believers this in some ways even more difficult, because of the sheer numbers
of people. A good way to address this, is that all of us put on “the greeter” hat. It is a temptation to be a friendly church,
but only to ourselves. Consider meeting someone new every Sunday, or getting to know others we serve with better. Ask the
friendly question to someone, “Will you tell me something about you that I don’t know?” It is important to be nice, but it is
more important to be nice and friendly.
Mission: Guatemala Summer 2012 (Dates TBA)
Change a Life...Change the World
Here is a great opportunity to change the world one life
at a time. We are planning a mission trip to Mazetenango,
Guatemala. This community is located about an hour and a
half from Guatemala City. It is a new church, focused on
evangelism, that has about 25 families attending plus some
children. The church has been ministering to the town's one
public school that has about 325 children. Some of the projects
we are considering are VBS at the school, evangelism,
visitation, and distribution of food bags or water filters. This
is a great opportunity for families and for mission trip first
timers. There will be lots of training and orientation before
we leave, so you do not have to know anything to be interested.
There will be an opportunity to learn more on Sunday,
February 5, at 4:00 p.m. in room 100. We are especially
looking for anyone who knows how to do the Hokey-
Pokey.
