Secret Key Cryptography Secret key cryptography, also known as symmetric cryptography, uses one secret key. This key is shared by the sender and receiver of the message and the same key is used for encryption and decryption of data. An example is the Data Encryption Standard (DES). Secret key cryptography is simple and fast but the main drawback of the system is that the two parties must ensure the secret key is exchanged securely.
