At <strong>Fred</strong> <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, our commitment<br />

and passion lie in what we strive to reach: the elimination<br />

of cancer and related diseases as causes of human suffering and<br />

death. This is an ambitious goal, one that demands hard work,<br />

scientific excellence and breakthrough creativity. To accomplish this,<br />

we have attracted some of the world’s greatest minds—scientists<br />

who are discovering new ways to detect cancers earlier when<br />

cure rates are highest, developing effective treatments with fewer<br />

side effects, and learning how to prevent cancers from starting.<br />

Thank you for your support<br />

of this special institution<br />

As I write this note to you—our <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong><br />

supporters—my official duties as the <strong>Center</strong>’s president and<br />

director are about to come to an end. The primary thought on my<br />

mind is how fortunate I have been to have had the opportunity to<br />

serve this institution for 13 years and to have had your support.<br />

I hear from many people what a special place the <strong>Hutchinson</strong><br />

<strong>Center</strong> is—from employees, from patients, from supporters<br />

and from students and research fellows who have left to go<br />

elsewhere. I suppose one of the very exceptional aspects of the<br />

<strong>Center</strong> is that almost any view of it reveals “specialness.”<br />

From a scientific viewpoint, I see excellence in the many<br />

dimensions of medical science here—fundamental laboratory<br />

science, clinical research and population sciences—and in the<br />

ability of scientists in these different disciplines to collaborate.<br />

Reflecting back and moving forward<br />

Dr. Lee Hartwell, president and director of <strong>Fred</strong> <strong>Hutchinson</strong><br />

<strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Center</strong> for 13 years, retired at the<br />

end of September. Lee led the <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong> through an<br />

unprecedented period of growth and challenges. Under his<br />

leadership, the <strong>Center</strong> has become one of the premier research<br />

institutions in the world.<br />

This final annual report of Lee’s tenure highlights one of his<br />

great legacies to the <strong>Center</strong>, our significant increase in private<br />

funding over the last 13 years. We are grateful for our donors’<br />

contribution to that legacy.<br />

I see distinction in our many breakthroughs—metabolic<br />

control, cord-blood stem cell expansion, immunotherapy, women’s<br />

health.<br />

But the specialness that we all feel about the institution has<br />

more to do with our respect for the value of each and every<br />

individual who contributes to the institution with their time,<br />

energy, creativity or resources. We are all fortunate to be part of<br />

the <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong> family, and I look forward to many years of<br />

remaining a family member as president and director emeritus.<br />

With great pleasure, we will welcome our fourth president<br />

and director, Dr. Larry Corey, in early January 2011. In Larry we<br />

have a proven <strong>Center</strong> leader uniquely positioned to forge new<br />

partnerships — scientific, academic and financial — to take the<br />

<strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong> to the next level and represent us on the<br />

world stage.<br />

With Lee’s legacy, Larry’s leadership, our scientific<br />

prowess and your support, we will continue the <strong>Center</strong>’s<br />

Private Contributors Fiscal Year 2010<br />

<strong>Fred</strong> <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Center</strong> relies on private contributions to accelerate our groundbreaking work. In addition to providing the tangible resources<br />

our investigators need to advance their research, support from private donors inspires <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong> scientists in the daily pursuit of discovery. The individuals,<br />

Nobel Laureates Circle<br />

The Nobel Laureates Circle recognizes<br />

contributors who have made cumulative gifts<br />

of $1 million or more. These key contributors<br />

are permanent members of the Circle which<br />

was established in 2001 to honor the<br />

<strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s Nobel Prize recipients,<br />

Drs. E. Donnall Thomas (1990), Lee Hartwell<br />

(2001) and Linda Buck (2004). By giving at<br />

this level, members of the Nobel Laureates<br />

Circle are at the forefront of philanthropic<br />

leadership and make a significant impact on<br />

To understand the machinery of cancer, you first have to focus on the biological nuts and bolts. That’s basic research—studying the<br />

molecular and cellular whys and hows of biology. The <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong> is populated with some of the world’s top basic scientists,<br />

women and men who explore the microscopic cosmos within the confines of their laboratories. > Their discoveries—like how the corkscrew<br />

shape of the cancer-causing intestinal bug Helicobacter pylori enables it to survive in a hostile sea of gastric acid—are shared with scientists<br />

everywhere, propelling science forward. > They’ve learned how a key cellular process goes awry with age, helping to explain the cancer-aging<br />

connection. > And they’ve discovered how to enable organisms to survive a lethally cold environment by putting them into a reversible state of<br />

hibernation. Such fundamental insight today leads to the cures of tomorrow.<br />

The reach of the <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s mission to eliminate cancer and related diseases is not limited by geography. Our research and medical<br />

expertise span the globe through dozens of studies in more than 50 countries. By collaborating with doctors and researchers around the world,<br />

we’re advancing medical science in countries that suffer from cancer and infectious disease at disproportionate rates. > Our quest to understand and<br />

conquer infection-related cancers led us to partner with researchers in Uganda, where rates of these cancers are among the highest in the world.<br />

> We’ve helped low-income countries implement cost-effective breast cancer programs to detect and treat the most common disease among women<br />

worldwide. > And we lead the world’s largest clinical trials program devoted to developing and testing HIV vaccines. We were the first to discover<br />

links between HIV and other diseases like malaria and genital herpes and have recently uncovered why herpes infection increases risk of HIV.<br />

Sharing scientific research and medical knowledge is a fundamental principle of the <strong>Hutchinson</strong> <strong>Center</strong>. > For almost three decades, the<br />

<strong>Center</strong> has been part of the National <strong>Cancer</strong> Institute’s <strong>Cancer</strong> Information Service network, a free resource to patients, caregivers and<br />

the public that provides personalized information about cancer prevention, screening and treatment. Recently, we were selected to be the sole<br />

provider of this service for the entire nation. The contact center located on our campus handles more than 100,000 inquiries annually by phone,<br />

online chat and e-mail. > For the past 20 years, our Science Education Partnership has trained hundreds of science teachers in the use of<br />

cutting-edge biomedical research tools for use in their classrooms. They in turn have exposed thousands of students to the thrill of real-life lab<br />

experiments. > And for more than 10 years, our Hutch High symposium has introduced more than 3,500 students to research in our labs.<br />
