"Mirror"survey- a dialogue in two parts
2009 - Second part of the survey on key competences of the circus business:
Research among young professional graduates and / or autodidacts
Project background
In 2008, FEDEC did a survey among employers of European circus professional sector (schools,
employers) in order to identify the key competencies expected or necessary for the integration of
professional artists on the market. This first part conducted among employers will be followed by a
survey among young professional artists with 1 to 5 years of professional experience.
An "evaluation" of key competencies will be done on the basis of the results from both parts from
the survey. It will also be a question of identifying key competencies and training places where they
were acquired:
- those acquired after the instruction provided in a training space;
- those that are acquired by professional practice.
Thus, the "Mirror" survey will allow both to assess the relevance of the training of any circus school
with a curriculum employment-oriented.
1. Objectives, target audience and the impact of the investigation "Mirror"
Objectives of the survey
- to improve knowledge of key competences of the circus business through research
among young artists inserted in the world of work;
- to contribute to strengthening links with the world of work, research and society as a
whole, by allowing the employability of young people of training in circus arts;
- to improve education and training of teachers and trainers in the filed of Circus arts
in Europe;
- to improve the relevance of the training of any circus school by collecting
information from professional artists graduated from schools and by providing an
analysis tool for decision in terms of curriculum.
Target groups
The "Mirror" survey, 2nd part is addresses:
- young professional artists, former circus schools students
- young professional autodidacts
The results of the survey could have an impact on secondary target groups:
- Teachers working in circus art schools in Europe;
- Young people wishing to engage in a training course in circus arts;
- Students registered in training courses in circus arts in Europe;
- Young people from these sectors, soon to become employed.

Impact
The "Mirror" will impact at different levels:
a) Impact on quality of education provided by teachers
Through analysis of survey results, we will distinguish several categories of competence acquired
through education or in the artistic practice at a professional level. The analysis of answers will
assert the need to extend some lessons/trainings creating competences, and on the contrary, it will
also highlight the need for improvements or additional training modules needed for the acquisition
of one more large number of skills-keys. The overall objective remains the search for positive impact
on the quality of education in the field of Circus arts at a European level.
b) Impact on the labor market in the Circus arts field
The first part of the survey conduced among employers identified the needs of professionals in
terms of key competences. The analysis of the second part of the investigation will improve the
knowledge of the key competences of the circus business according to the opinion of young
professional artists. The setting of the two tests will draw attention to this finding but will also allow
improvement in terms of training in order to increase employability and multiply their chances enter
the job market. The impact on employment may be assessed by a monitoring of students to be
graduated (up to 12 months after graduation) carried out by the schools (at least 50% of FEDEC
member schools).
2. Methodology and planning
A first contact between FEDEC and the member schools part of the network will allow:
- the introduction of the objectives of the second part of the survey "Mirror";
- a later contact of the FEDEC with professional artists, former students, suggested by
each school.
Following this process, a database of 200 artists will be established.
List of targeted questions
A questionnaire on the various categories of key competencies will be established.
The different categories of competence may be defined on the following basis:
- Which are the skills that professional artists (former students) had at the end of the
school;
- Which are the skills that professional artists (former students) had at the end of the
school;
- Which are the most useful and, possibly, the ones that are less;
- Which are those they have acquired ‘in the field’;
- Which are the ones they need and they could not acquire alone;
- Others that aren’t listed.
On-line survey
Professional artists proposed by schools will be contacted by FEDEC and invited to answer the online
questionnaire. The answers of all respondents are grouped together in the same on-line data
bank.
Questionnaire and analysis of responses
Contact with schools and artists to be interviewed and the overall coordination is entrusted to the
FEDEC project coordinator Danijela Jović.

and report) along with the conclusions of both parts of the survey will be entrusted to Zita Herman,
sociologist, working as project coordinator in the Baross Imre Circus Art School (Hungary).
Validation and presentation
The methodology used to analyze the results of the second part of the "Mirror" survey (statistical
study and report) and to draw conclusions of both parts of the survey will be presented within the
FEDEC (Board meeting) and to the wide public during Circa festival - Auch (France) between 26
and 29 October 2009.
This presentation will be followed by the analysis and writing of various documents (analysis, report
and conclusions) by the associated sociologist.
Dissemination of results
The results will be widely disseminated:
Planning
- on FEDEC’s website ( free download) but also on the website of its members and
partners;
- their newsletters and publications
- partners networks from the Circus arts field (networks, organizations and international
circus Circostrada Network, HorsLesMurs ...)
- professionals from the circus arts market
- leisure trainers
- future artists (about 600 students from vocational schools)
- professionals from classical and contemporary circus (circus companies ...)
- specialised magazines and press (Stradda, Movement...)
- wide public
