Good Friday Liturgy of Good Friday 22 April AD 2011
On Good Friday, the liturgy begins in silence,
with the Priest and ministers prostrate before the Altar, and the people kneeling.
I. Liturgy of the Word
Collect
Let us pray. Almighty God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus
Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the
cross; who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end.
Amen.
The Lesson: Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12
Behold, my servant shall prosper, he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high. As many were
astonished at him—his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the
sons of men—so shall he startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which has
not been told them they shall see, and that which they have not heard they shall understand.
Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he grew
up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or comeliness that we should
look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows,
and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him
not.
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, struck down by God,
and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the
chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we
have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he
was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in
his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the will of the LORD to bruise him; he has put him to grief; when he makes himself an offering for
sin, he shall see his offspring, he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand; he shall
see the fruit of the travail of his soul and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make
many to be accounted righteous; and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the
great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered
with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
V. The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

The Gradual: Psalm 22 [Deus, Deus meus]
My God, my | God; look up- | on me;
--| why hast | thou for- | saken me?
and art so | far from my | health,
and from the | words of | my com- | plaint?
O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou | hear est | not;
and in the night season | also I | take no | rest.
And thou con- | tinuest | holy,
O thou | Wor -| ship of | Israel.
Our fathers | hoped in | thee;
they trusted in | thee, and | thou didst de- | liver them.
They called upon thee, | and were | holpen;
they put their trust in thee, | and were | not con- | founded.
But as for me, I am a | worm, and no | man;
a very scorn of men, and the | outcast | of the | people.
All they that see me | laugh me to | scorn;
they shoot out their lips, and | shake their | heads, | saying,
He trusted in the LORD, that | he would de- | liver him;
let him de| liver him, | if he will | have him.
But thou art he that took me out of my | mother's | womb;
thou wast my hope, when I hanged yet up | on my | mother's | breasts.
I have been left unto thee ever | since I was | born;
thou art my God even | from my | mother's | womb.
O go not from me; for trouble is | hard at | hand,
and | there is | none to | help me.
Many oxen are | come a- | bout me;
fat bulls of Bashan close me | in on | ev 'ry | side.
They gape upon me | with their | mouths,
as it were a | ramping and a | roaring | lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my | bones are out of | joint;
my heart also in the midst of my body is | even like | melting | wax.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue | cleaveth to my | gums,
and thou bringest me | into the | dust of | death.
For many dogs are | come a- | bout me,
and the council of the wicked | layeth | siege a- | gainst me.
They pierced my hands and my feet: I may tell | all my | bones:
they stand | staring and | looking up- | on me.
They part my | garments a- | mong them,
and cast | lots up | on my | vesture.
But be not thou far from | me, O | LORD;
thou art my succour, | haste | thee to | help me.

Deliver my soul | from the | sword,
my darling | from the | power of the | dog.
Save me from the | lion's | mouth;
thou hast heard me also from a- | mong the | horns of the | unicorns.
The Epistle: Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9
Brethren, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God,
let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning. Let us then
with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time
of need.
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him
who was able to save him from death, and he was heard for his godly fear. Although he was a Son, he
learned obedience through what he suffered; and being made perfect he became the source of eternal
salvation to all who obey him.
The Verse Christus factus est Philippians 2:8, 9
Christus factus est pro nobis obediens usque ad mortem, mortem autem crucis.
Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum et dedit illi Nomen, quod est super omne nomen.
Christ became obedient for our sakes unto death: even the death of the Cross.
Wherefore God hath also highly exalted him, and given him a Name which is above every name.
II. The Solemn Collects
The biddings are sung by the Deacon. The Priest intones the Collects.
Please remain standing until the Deacon sings, “Let us pray. Let us bow the knee.” All then shall kneel to pray in silence for a
time, standing again when the Deacon sings, “Arise.”
Dear People of God: Our heavenly Father sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that
the world through him might be saved; that all who believe in him might be delivered from the power of
sin and death, and become heirs with him of everlasting life. We pray, therefore, for people everywhere
according to their needs.
Let us pray for the holy Catholic Church of Christ throughout the world;
For its unity in witness and service
For our Holy Father, Pope Benedict
For all bishops and other ministers and the people whom they serve
For Daniel, our Archbishop, and all the people of this diocese
For all Christians in this community
For those about to be baptized (particularly ______)
That God will confirm his Church in faith, increase it in love, and preserve it in peace.
Let us pray. Let us bow the knee. Silence Arise.

Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and
sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy
Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
Let us pray for all nations and peoples of the earth, and for those in authority among them;
For the President of the United States
For the Congress and the Supreme Court
For the nations of the world
For all who serve the common good
That by God’s help they may seek justice and truth, and live in peace and concord.
Let us pray. Let us bow the knee. Silence Arise.
Almighty God, kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those
who take counsel for the nations of the earth; that in tranquility your dominion may increase, until the earth
is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us pray for all who suffer and are afflicted in body or in mind;
For the hungry and the homeless, the destitute and the oppressed
For the sick, the wounded, and the crippled
For those in loneliness, fear, and anguish
For those who face temptation, doubt, and despair
For the sorrowful and bereaved
For prisoners and captives, and those in mortal danger
That God in his mercy will comfort and relieve them, and grant them the knowledge of his love,
and stir up in us the will and patience to minister to their needs.
Let us pray. Let us bow the knee. Silence Arise.
Gracious God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer: Let the cry of those in misery
and need come to you, that they may find your mercy present with them in all their afflictions; and give us,
we pray, the strength to serve them for the sake of him who suffered for us, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Let us pray for all who have not received the Gospel of Christ;
For those who have never heard the word of salvation
For those who have lost their faith
For those hardened by sin or indifference
For the contemptuous and the scornful
For those who are enemies of the cross of Christ and persecutors of his disciples
For those who in the name of Christ have persecuted others
That God will open their hearts to the truth, and lead them to faith and obedience.
Let us pray. Let us bow the knee. Silence Arise.
Merciful God, creator of all the peoples of the earth and lover of souls: Have compassion on all who do not
know you as you are revealed in your Son Jesus Christ; let your Gospel be preached with grace and power
to those who have not heard it; turn the hearts of those who resist it; and bring home to your fold those who
have gone astray; that there may be one flock under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us commit ourselves to our God, and pray for the grace of a holy life, that, with all who have
departed this world and have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to God
alone, we may be accounted worthy to enter into the fullness of the joy of our Lord, and receive the
crown of life in the day of resurrection.
Let us pray. Let us bow the knee. Silence Arise.
O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and
sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation;
let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which
had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him

through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
III. The Veneration of the True Cross
After the Solemn Collects, the Priest and ministers will retrieve the True Cross. During which time, the people will sing:
During the unveiling of the True Cross, the following responsory is sung thrice:
V. Behold the wood of the Cross, whereon was hung the Savior of the world.
R.
The Priest will offer the Cross for the veneration of the faithful. As the people approach the True Cross, they should genuflect (the
relic of the True Cross is the only relic rightly honored with a genuflection). The ministers venerate the Cross first, followed by the
choir, and then the people. During this time, the Reproaches are sung.
Veneration Antiphon: Crucem tuam adoramus Psalm 67:1
We venerate thy holy Cross, O Lord: and praise and glorify thy holy resurrection.
For by virtue of this very wood joy hath come to the whole world.
Ps. God be merciful unto us, and bless us, and show us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us.
We venerate thy holy Cross….
The Reproaches .
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
What more could I have done for thee that I have not done? I indeed did plant thee, O my vineyard, with
exceeding fair fruit: and thou art become very bitter unto me: for vinegar, mingled with gall, thou gavest
me when thirsty: and with a spear thou hast pierced the side of thy Saviour.
I did scourge thy captors with their first-born for thy sake: and thou hast scourged me and delivered me up.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I led thee forth out of slavery, drowning thy captors in the sea: and thou hast delivered me up unto the chief
priests.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I did open the sea before thee: and thou hast opened my side with a spear.

O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I did go before thee in the pillar of the cloud: and thou hast led me to Pilate’s court.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I did bare thee up with manna in the wilderness: and thou hast stricken me down with blows and scourges.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I did give thee to drink the water of life from the rock: and thou hast given me to drink but gall and vinegar.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I did smite the kings of the Canaanites for thy sake: and thou hast smitten my head with a reed.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I did give thee a royal scepter: and thou hast given unto my head a crown of thorns.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
I did raise thee on high with great power: and thou hast hanged me upon the gibbet of the Cross.
O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.
After the veneration, the Cross is carried to its place at the Altar, and the lighted candles are placed around the Altar or near the
Cross.
IV. MASS OF THE PRE-SANCTIFIED
The Blessed Sacrament will be brought from the Altar of Repose. The Altar is covered with a cloth, and the corporal and book are
placed upon it. The ciborium, containing the Blessed Sacrament is carried by the Deacon from the place of reposition to the Altar.
Two servers with lighted candles accompany him, and then set their candles near the Altar or on it. The Deacon places the
ciborium on the Altar, uncovers it, and genuflects.
As the Deacon leaves to the Altar of Repose, the Choir will sing the Crux Fidelis and Pange Lingua. The faithful should kneel as
the Blessed Sacrament is brought into the Sanctuary.
Faithful Cross, above all other One and only noble tree:
None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit thy peer may be;
Sweetest wood and sweetest iron, Sweetest weight is hung on thee.
Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle, Sing the ending of the fray,
Now above the Cross, the trophy, Sound the loud triumphant lay:
Tell how Christ, the world’s redeemer, As a victim won the day.
Faithful Cross, . . . peer may be.
God in pity saw man fallen. Sham’d and sunk in misery.
When he fell on death by tasting Fruit of the forbidden tree:
Then another tree was chosen Which the world from death should free.
Sweetest wood . . . hung on thee.
Thus the scheme of our salvation Was of old in order laid
That the manifold deceiver’s Art by art might be outweigh’d:
And the lure the foe put forward, Into means of healing made.
Faithful Cross, . . . peer may be.
Therefore when th’ appointed fulness Of the holy time was come,
He was sent who maketh all things Forth from God’s eternal home:
Thus he came to earth incarnate. Offspring of a virgin’s womb.
Sweetest wood . . . hung on thee.
Lo! he lies, an infant weeping, Where the narrow manger stands:
While the Mother-maid his members Wraps in mean and lowly bands:

And the swaddling clothes are winding Round God’s helpless feet and hands.
Faithful Cross, . . . peer may be.
Thirty years among us dwelling, His appointed time fulfill’d,
Born for this, he meets his Passion, For that this he freely will’d:
On the Cross the Lamb is lifted Where his life-blood shall be spill’d.
Sweetest wood . . . hung on thee.
He endur’d the nails, the spitting. Vinegar, and spear, and reed;
From that holy Body broken Blood and water both proceed:
Earth, and stars, and sky, and ocean By that flood from stain are freed.
Faithful Cross, . . . peer may be.
Bend thy boughs, O tree of glory! Thy relaxing sinews bend;
For awhile the ancient rigor That thy birth bestow’d suspend:
And the King of heav’nly beauty On thy bosom gently tend.
Sweetest wood . . . hung on thee.
Thou alone wast counted worthy This world’s ransom to uphold;
For a shipwreck’d race preparing Harbor, like the ark of old:
With the sacred Blood anointed From the smitten Lamb that roll’d
Faithful Cross, . . . peer may be.
To the Trinity be glory Everlasting as is meet;
Equal to the Father, equal To the Son and Paraclete:
Trinal Unity, whose praises All created things repeat. Amen.
Sweetest wood . . . hung on thee.
After the choir finishes the hymn, the Deacon invites the faithful to penitence as follows:
Ye who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors, and
intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy
ways: Draw near with faith, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.
Ministers and People:
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge
and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have
committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath
and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the
remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have
mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of
thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Priest stands and says
Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us
in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.
The Priest, standing at the Altar, sings or says
And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father… (All shall join in singing the Lord’s Prayer)
The Priest shall show the Host to the People, saying,
Behold the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world.
The People shall join him in saying thrice,
Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof;
but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

The Sacrament is then administered with the customary words.
Communion of the Faithful Communion Guidelines, Missal page 31
Communion Anthem: “In manus tuas” Thomas Tallis (1505-1585)
In manus tuas, Domine,
commendo spiritum meum;
redemisti me Domine, Deus veritatis.
In thy hands, O Lord,
I commend my spirit;
thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.
Communion Hymn: “Drop, Drop, Slow Tears” Song 46 Hymn 69
For the final prayer the Priest shall say,
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, we pray thee to set thy passion, cross, and death, between thy
judgment and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Give mercy and grace to the living, pardon and
rest to the dead, to thy holy Church peace and concord, and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; who
with the Father and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
