Get Involved
Local Improvement Networks (LINks) aim
to give people a stronger voice in how
their health and social care services are
delivered. Our local LINks works closely
with the NHS to help build services
that patients want and need. LINks is a
completely independent service. Contact
LINk:MK on 01908 266696 or by email at
carol.linkmk@ageconcernmk.org.uk for
further information.
There are other ways you can get
involved, such as:
• Take part in local or national NHS
surveys
• Join a patient group
• Become a volunteer
NHS Constitution
The NHS Constitution details what patients, public and our staff
can expect from the NHS.
Patients have a number of rights and pledges under the
Constitution, as well as a number of responsibilities, such as:
• Taking responsibility for your own good health and wellbeing
• Registering with a GP practice – the main point of access
to NHS care
• Treating NHS staff and other patients with respect
• Keeping appointments, or cancelling within a reasonable
time. Receiving treatment within the maximum waiting
times may be compromised unless you do
• Following the course of treatment which you have agreed,
and talking to your clinician if you find this difficult
• Participating in important public health programmes such
as vaccination
• Giving feedback – both positive and negative – about
the treatment and care you have received, including any
adverse reactions you may have had
Find out more about the constitution at:
www.dh.gov.uk/en/healthcare/NHSConstitution
Choice
If your GP refers
you to hospital for
treatment, did you
know you can choose
what hospital you go
to? You can choose
any NHS hospital,
and even some
independent sector
hospitals, anywhere
in the country, as long as they provide the service you need. It
can be a hospital that you are familiar with, one that is close to
your family, or one that can treat you more quickly. Ask your GP
about the choices available.
Privacy and Dignity
People on low incomes can get help with the cost of
prescriptions, eye tests, spectacles, dental treatment and
travel to hospital. Please ask your pharmacist, optician or
dentist for a copy of the HC1 leaflet and an application form.
We believe that being treated with dignity is a right for all
patients, not an optional extra. It’s not enough that services are
efficient: all patients must be treated with the compassion and
respect they deserve.
An important part of Dignity in Care is single sex wards in inpatient
facilities. All Milton Keynes Community Health Services’
in-patient units are based in modern, light, airy buildings. Every
patient has their own room with en-suite bathroom facilities to
ensure their privacy. All three units received ‘Excellent’ ratings for
privacy and dignity in their annual Patient Environment Action
Team assessments for 2009.
Our in-patient units include:
• The Older People’s Assessment Service (TOPAS) based in Bletchley, cares for older people with mental
health issues
• The Windsor Intermediate Care Unit, also based in Bletchley provides rehabilitation for mainly older
people to help them regain their independence after a stay in hospital before they return home
• The Campbell Centre, based on the Hospital Campus in Eaglestone, treats adults with mental health issues.
Taking Good Care of Yourself
Healthier lifestyles
What we eat and the activities we do can make a big
difference to our health. The good news is you don’t need
to make big changes, but there’s a few simple changes we
can all do to make you healthier. Try adding more fruit
and vegetables to your meals or having them as a snack,
when shopping choose lean meats and lower fat dairy
products. A diet that is high in fruit and vegetables, high
in fibre and low in salt and fat, particularly saturated fat,
will help prevent conditions like heart disease and high
blood pressure.
Try to fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise three times a
week to keep you healthy, you don’t have to splash out
on a gym membership or expensive equipment – a walk, bike ride or dance around at home is fun and just
as effective! There’s lots going on in Milton Keynes including Motiv8, a fun, friendly programme for children
aged five to 16 years and their family who want to learn more about how to lead a healthier lifestyle.
Stop Smoking Services
If you’re ready to quit smoking, contact the Milton
Keynes Stop Smoking Service. Their specialist stop
smoking advisors offer free, non-judgmental support
and advice to help you
quit, for good. Pop in to
your local pharmacy,
GP practice or call
the Stop Smoking
Service on
You are four times
more likely to stop
support.
Intermediate Care Services
The service provides a range of community
rehabilitation and therapies to people aged over 18
who live in Milton Keynes and/or have a Milton Keynes
GP.
It is provided jointly by the health and social care
services. Intermediate care services provide a range
of services either in the person’s own home or in a
rehabilitation unit. These services provide personalised
care planning and goal setting to improve a person’s
independence. The first option for all hospital
discharges should be to return a person to their own
home with staff working to support them to regain
independence in the place they will continue to live.
Referalls may be made by a health or social care
professional.
Alcohol
For many people, having a drink or two is an
important part of socialising and most of us enjoy a
drink when we’re relaxing or having fun. Nobody’s
saying that we should all cut out drinking, but it
is important to have the facts about how alcohol
can affect your health, relationships and career.
Most people who suffer health problems because
of their drinking are not alcoholics, but rather
those who have been drinking more than the
recommended limits over a number of years. Men
should not regularly drink more than three to
four units a day and women not more than two
to three. “Regularly” means drinking every day or
most days of the week.
Regularly drinking more than the recommended
number of units over a long period can lead to
complications like certain types of cancer, memory
loss, increased risk of heart disease and stroke, liver
disease such as cirrhosis and liver cancer, stomach
disease and potentially fatal alcohol poisoning.
Drinking too much alcohol can also lead to doing
things you might not do if you were sober, such
as sexual risk taking and violent behaviour. Know
your limits –respect yourself and protect yourself.

Sexual Health
Sexual health is an important part of emotional well-being. People can help themselves to have good sexual
health by being responsible: using condoms with new or concurrent partners to avoid a variety of infections,
including Chlamydia, which is the most common sexually-transmitted infection.
One in ten 15 to 24 year olds has Chlamydia. It’s usually symptomless, so you cannot see when someone has
the infection. The only way of finding out if you have Chlamydia is to have a quick and painless test. The test
is completely free and confidential – you can order a postal testing kit online at www.gettestedmk.nhs.uk.
This website also has details of other places where you can have the test such as Brook or your GP practice. If
Chlamydia is left untreated, it can cause infertility in women and a painful infection in men’s testicles.
The best way of preventing Chlamydia, as well as other sexually-transmitted infections is to use a condom
correctly every time you have sex. Local young people aged under 25 can get free condoms confidentially from
participating GP practices and pharmacies under the C-Card scheme. Visit www.mkweb.co.uk/Brook to find
out how you can get your card.
Using Medicines Sensibly
If you are prescribed medicines, it is important to know the answers to the following
questions:
• What does this medicine do?
• How long will I need to use it?
• How and when should I take it or use it (e.g. inhalers)?
• Should I avoid any medicines, drinks, foods or activities while I am taking this medicine?
• What are the possible risks and side effects and what should I do if they happen to me?
Your doctor or nurse should tell you the answer to these questions when they write the prescription. You can
also ask your pharmacist for advice when collecting prescriptions or when buying medicines. Your pharmacist
can also arrange to review how you use all your medicines. All medicines come with an information leaflet. For
further help and advice, you can contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk.
