Thanks to generous donors,
Montini Catholic was able to
install fi eld lights in the Duff y
Memorial Stadium. The fi rst
‘Friday Night Lights’ game
was played on September 4,
versus Loyola Academy!
Dear Friends,
This school year, Montini Catholic celebrates its 45th year of Catholic, Lasallian Education in the Diocese
of Joliet. Throughout the school’s 45 year history, the foundation of our school community has always
been its people – the students, faculty and staff and alumni and parents of alumni and current students
of our school who truly make a diff erence at Montini Catholic High School. In this issue of Bronco
Express we place a spotlight on two Montini Catholic Educators and Administrators who have been
leaders in our school community for 45 years combined. Maryann O’Neill and Brother Thomas Harding,
FSC have been outstanding examples of talented, Lasallian educators who have dedicated themselves
to making Montini Catholic the outstanding college-preparatory school that it is today. To Maryann and Bro. Tom, I know I
speak for our entire school community when I say thank you and congratulations on your great careers in Catholic education.
This issue of Bronco Express also features some very talented students who have achieved a great deal of success academically
in our fi ne arts program and in the athletic arena. Our school community is truly blessed to have so many talented and
good spirited young men and women that enter our hallways and graduate from our school. The members of our student
body continue to raise the bar of excellence in all areas of our school and I am particularly proud of our students who and
our parents who worked together to raise over $26,000 for Breast Cancer Research through the Girl’s Volleyball Team’s Volley
for a Cure program and the Football Team’s Tackle for a Cure program. I would also like to applaud Morgan Bell and Melissa
Neustadt, both from the class of 2002, for taking the lead in The Chicago Green Offi ce Challenge at their respective companies
and congratulate Dan O’Toole of the class of 1992 and Tim Ogan of the Class of 1990, who both received Offi cer of
the Year recognition from their respective Law Enforcement agencies. Our alumni continue to make us proud as they are
regularly recognized for the leadership in their careers and community service.
Finally, as you can see from the cover of this issue of Bronco Express, through the generosity of several individuals and families
we were able to raise the funds necessary to install permanent lighting in Duff y Stadium. There was truly a great sense
of pride and excitement throughout the Montini Catholic community as we turned on the lights for our fi rst home football
game of the 2010 season on September 4th vs. Loyola Academy. Over the years, Montini Catholic has been fortunate to
be the recipient of outstanding displays of generosity and support from the members of its school community for various
school and building projects and programs. It is through this continued support and generosity that we have been able
to advance our school’s mission of education and provide our students with an outstanding college-preparatory experience
and provide them with some of the fi nest academic and extracurricular facilities in the area. As we approach the end
of the calendar year 2010, I ask all the members of our school community to consider making a gift to the Montini Catholic
Annual Appeal. It is through the Annual Appeal that we can maintain a strong academic and extracurricular program for
our students and keep Montini Catholic strong and competitive with the other schools of our area. Please remember that
our school has been off ered a $20,000 Annual Appeal Challenge and any new gift made to the Annual Appeal will be
matched up to $20,000. Last year, 600 members of our school community made a gift to the Annual Appeal so we hope
that this Annual Appeal challenge by one of our members of our school community will motivate the other 6000 members
of our school community to make a gift to the Annual Appeal.
So as we approach the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays I am truly thankful for being part of a school community that
has so many talented and caring students, being able to work with so many dedicated and gifted educators, like Maryann
O’Neill and Brother Thomas Harding, FSC, and to be able to rely on the generosity and support of our alumni and parents.
The success of Montini Catholic over the past 45 years is due to the people that make up our great school community and
it is my hope that together we continue to advance the educational mission of our school and provide the very best to our
present and future students. My very best to you and your loved ones and “May Jesus Live In Your Hearts…Forever”.
Sincerely,
James F. Segredo
FALL PLAY: “PRIDE & PREJUDICE”
Montini Catholic High School’s fall play
performed “Pride & Prejudice” to soldout
crowds this November 5th,6th, and
7th. English Teacher and Theatre Director,
Dr. Diann Matheson, prepared the cast and crew
for several weeks, making sure everyone’s efforts
all paid off in the end! “It truly was an outstanding
performance,” commented school President
Jim Segredo. The Drama Department performed
“Pride & Prejudice,” based on Jane Austen’s classic
novel about character Mrs. Bennet’s (performed by
Allie Bugajski) determination to get her daughters
married. Jane (Annette Popernik), Elizabeth (Kate
Zumach), and Lydia (Elena Mariotini) are likely-looking
girls in an unlikely-looking period when a woman’s
one possible career is matrimony. To be a wife was
success. Anything else was failure.
Jane and her Mr. Bingley (Brian Frank)
and Lydia with her Mr. Wickham (Jaxom
Victor) are quite content
with the good of things
as they are; not Elizabeth!
She
actually refuses to marry Mr. Collins (Dominic Guanzon)
whom she openly deplores and Mr. Darcy (Alex Santay)
whom she secretly adores.
The play is the story of the duel between Elizabeth
and her prejudice and Darcy and his pride. Each gives
in before the evening is over, and pride and prejudice
meet halfway.
The entire Montini Catholic Drama Department
put in alot of practice bringing this famous novel
to life. The actors weren’t the only ones involved
in this fall play; the production was complimented
by all the work of the set crew, along with parent,
Mrs. Zumach (who painted the set), past-parent and
Board Members, Mr. Edward Mack (who helped build
the set), and Mr. Jim Van DeVelde (who helped do
the lighting design for the play).or
HONORING YEARS OF
COMMITMENT:
Maryann O’Neill & Br. Thomas Harding Celebrate Milestone Anniversaries
Maryann O’Neill
Principal, 25th Anniversary
Principal, Maryann O’Neill, is celebrating
her 25th year at Montini
Catholic High School. She
has built numerous relationships
within the Montini Catholic community
and the Lombard/ DuPage community.
Maryann has lived in Lombard since
1971 and her four children attended Sacred
Heart School in Lombard and Montini Catholic
High School. Th is legacy continues as
one of her daughters is currently teaching
math at Montini Catholic, and six grandchildren
are attending Sacred Heart School.
Maryann was hired by the late Br. Joseph
Boggio, FSC to develop and teach a computer
science curriculum and math at Montini while
another Christian Brother was on sabbatical
to obtain his Masters Degree. “I promised to
stay two years and have now been here for 25,”
commented Maryann.
She has taken on many roles over the past
25 years. In addition to teaching, Maryann
has been a Technology Coordinator,
6 Bronco Express Fall 2010
Administrative Assistant to the Principal,
Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional
Development, Assistant Principal,
and now Principal. She also took on many
roles in extra-curricular activities as Lasallian
Youth Moderator, Retreat Director, Student
Activities Moderator, National Honor Society
Moderator, and ‘Auctioneer’, as well as a
member of the Principal’s Advisory Council,
the Strategic Planning Committee, and the
Chair of the Academic Advisory Council.
Not only has Maryann O’Neill’s positions
changed over the years, but also has the
school itself. She comments on her observations
of Montini over her past 25 years:
“I have seen the school grow from electric typewriters
to state-of-the art computer labs and a
Distance Learning Center. Th e curriculum grew
from one programming class and a Computer
Literacy Class to include courses like Web Design,
Java, Digital Graphic Design and Digital Media.
Th e academic program is aligned to State Standards
and boasts 10 AP courses and a full-range
of honors courses. It also includes a general education
program that is college-preparatory and
focuses on those students reading below grade
level. Th e Campus Ministry programs include
spiritual opportunities and service opportunities
both at school and in the surrounding communities.
I have seen the addition of a Math Wing,
a Science Wing, a Campus Ministry Center, a
phenomenal Learning Resource Center (complete
with a Library and a full computer lab), and
improved and expanded athletic fi elds and a new
three-court Field House. I have seen class-size
diminish and course off erings expand while the
school maintains its desired enrollment of 700
students.”
Maryann says the most rewarding part of
her job as Principal has been the students who
e-mail, call, or drop over to talk about their
careers and accomplishments, while bragging
about their families and children. “It is heartwarming
to hear from a former student who is
now a brain surgeon, one who returned from
years in the Peace Corps, and yet another who
is an Assistant Principal,” remarked Maryann.
“I am proud to say that we have 12 Montini
Catholic Alums working here, seven of whom
were students during the past 25 years.”
Maryann continues on what she loves
about Montini Catholic, “Watching the school
improve and the students achieve more each year
is gratifying. Watching the scholarship off erings
rise from $2 million to $7 million, while writing
letters to help students achieve their dreams and
get accepted to Universities like Yale, Princeton,
and Notre Dame. It’s very gratifying to be a part
of the process that enables students to achieve a
college degree and enjoy a successful and rewarding
professional career.”
When Maryann was asked who has
inspired her the most, she said it was the
most diffi cult question because there were
so many, but that the one who had the longest
and most lasting impact was her latehusband,
Ed O’Neill. “He was a very intelligent
man who loved everything about living. He was a
great listener who found the good in everyone he
met. He knew how to support those around him
and made them feel good about themselves. He
found time for all who knew him and he always
found the silver lining. He had a great sense of
humor and could seriously make lemonade when
life gave him lemons. It was he who encouraged
me to switch careers, go back to school, and get
into education. It was he who encouraged me to
interview for the Principal’s position.”
Montini Catholic President, comments on
Maryann’s 25th Anniversary, “Maryann may
not have anticipated continuing her career at
Montini Catholic for this long, 25 years ago,
but her dedication and service to the school
has made, and continues to make, positive
impact on the school and its community,”
commented President Jim Segredo. “I know
I speak on behalf of the entire school community
when I say thank you to Maryann,
and we look forward to many years ahead.”
Brother Th omas Harding, FSC
Former Principal, President 1987-2004
Director of Community, Foundation, and Corporate Relations
Brother Th omas Harding, FSC is
celebrating his 20th year of service
and commitment to Montini
Catholic High School. Brother
Th omas was Principal of Montini
Catholic High School from 1987-1991 and
eventually became President of the school
from 1991 through 2004. After a sabbatical,
Brother Tom returned to Montini Catholic
to assume the responsibilities as Director
of Community, Foundation, & Corporate
Relations, and as an Instructor as needed
on the faculty.
Br. Th omas completed his Bachelor Degree
in History and Political Science (1976) and
his Masters in Education in Administration,
Leadership, and Supervision (1987) both
from DePaul University of Chicago. From
there, Br. Tom went on to take Post-Graduate
course work in Scripture & Th eology
from Loyola University and Catholic School
Development & Institutional Advancement,
(Th e Suddes Group) from the University of
Notre Dame.
His 20 years at Montini Catholic High
School began when the Christian Brothers
Province asked Br. Th omas to take on the
leadership of the school as Chief Administrator,
with the responsibility of taking
Montini Catholic to its next level of excellence
and educational service to the Catholic,
Christian Community of DuPage County and
Diocese of Joliet. Br. Tom took on this task
of expanding its enrollment and developing
new resources of support through institutional
advancement, marketing and development
starting in the summer of 1987.
Since then, Br. Tom has made quite a
name for Montini Catholic High School. He
is a man who never forgets a face or a name.
He has touched the lives of many students
and families within the Montini Catholic
Community and the larger DuPage Community.
Besides the service he is currently
providing in the Development Department
at Montini Catholic, Br. Th omas assists as
a Fire Department Chaplain with the York
Center & Lombard Fire Departments. “I
very much value my community service
with, and to both, the York Center Fire
Protection District and the Lombard Fire
Department serving and assisting as their
Chaplain, being available to the crew members,
their families, and our community at
large. I also have been humbled by the many
associations I have had as an extension of
leadership at Montini Catholic to so many,
through Rotary, Chamber of Commerce,
and other civic groups,” commented Br.
Th omas.
Br. Th omas says the most rewarding
aspect he has witnessed during his 20 years
at Montini Catholic is seeing sustained
growth in so many areas of the school community’s
operations such as Marketing and
Enrollment. “Seeing new families, and now
children Alums,” remarked Br. Th omas. “It’s
great witnessing all the generous support
and dedicated service from past families,
alumni, business, community leaders, and
present parents.” He comments on the
wonderful impact of all the additions of
new facilities since 1999 and the sustained
funding stream in order to support a growing
endowment, as well as to initiate ongoing
incorporation of new state-of-the-art
educational technology.
Br. Th omas concludes with, “Th e most
fulfi lling experience I am blessed with is
the opportunity to re-connect and stay connected
with a very generous and dedicated
school community of parents, past-parents,
alumni, and business leaders in association
with Montini Catholic High School, and in
how our educational mission inter-relates
with in all of DuPage County.”
76 MONTINI TEAMS HAVE EARNED IHSA
“TEAM ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT” AWARDS
Montini Catholic High School prides itself on the academic success of all its students, including
its student-athletes. Over the past 8 years, 76 Montini Catholic teams have earned
achieve this award, the Varsity Team (as a whole) must earn an average GPA of 3.0 or better
(on a 4.0 non-weighted scale) for the entire duration of the team’s season. Most of these
teams’ seasons continue on for two academic quarters, and these teams must maintain the
3.0 GPA over both academic quarters while in season. The following teams have earned the
1-800-366-4146
Montini Catholic High School has commissioned the services of Harris Connect to
research and produce the 2011 Alumni Directory. The directory is produced approximately
every five years as a way to keep our alumni records up to date.
Harris Connect will contact alumni to verify information that will be published in the
directory as well as provided to Montini Catholic. Alumni will receive emails, phone
calls, and direct mail requesting updates.
We hope you are able to update your information with us, so we can have the most
up-to-date knowledge concerning the activities of our great alums.
If you have any questions, please contact the alumni office at alumni@montini.org.
December 31, 2010 is quickly approaching and many people are
looking for ways to donate to a charitable organization before
the end of the year. Montini Catholic gratefully and graciously
accepts gifts in various forms, including these described herein:
1. CASH: The most common method to make a charitable gift
is to contribute cash. Donations to Montini Catholic High School
cost you much less when you file your federal income taxes. For
example, if you were to make a $ 2,500 gift before December 31st, and you are in
the 28 percent marginal tax bracket, you will save $ 700 in taxes. You are allowed
to deduct up to 50 percent of your own AGI (adjusted gross income). Anything over
and above 50 percent can be carried forward on your taxes for five years!
2. SECURITIES: Making a gift of any appreciated stock is one of the most advantageous
manner of giving to any qualified charity. For example, if you donate stock
which you purchased for $ 2,000 or more, 12 months ago, and now it is worth $
10,000, then you earn a deduction for the full $ 10,000 AND a tax-saving of $ 2,800
or 28 percent. In addition, you have avoided the capital gains tax on the appreciated
stock. The capital gains savings as a combined rate of 15 percent is $ 1,200! Your
TOTAL savings is $ 4,000 ! These sorts of benefits do not take into account the further
reduction in State of Illinois taxes.
3. REAL ESTATE: Gifts of appreciated real estate are similar in form to gifts of appreciated
stock. If you have owned the real estate for more than 12 months, then you will
avoid the capital gains tax and may deduct the fair-market value of the real estate.
4. LIFE INSURANCE: You may want to donate to Montini Catholic by making the
school the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy. If you have completed
paying for the policy, then your gift is the replacement value or the cost-basis of the
12 Bronco Express Fall 2010
PLANNED GIVING
Gifting to Montini Catholic
policy, whichever is less. You may also donate a new policy or a policy on which you
are still making payments. The premiums on a contributed policy are also deductible!
Gifts of life insurance are wonderful means to make sizeable contributions to
Montini Catholic High School.
5. PLANNED GIFTS: Examples of some planned gifts include designating Montini
Catholic High School in your own Will, or forming a charitable trust, or purchasing a
gift annuity. If you presently have a Will, the you can easily add an amendment (or
a “codicil:”) to provide for such a bequest. Sample language to add to, or to include
in your Will or to your Trust document:
a.GENERAL BEQUEST is for a certain percentage or portion of the Estate: “ I give
to Montini Catholic High School one-fourth of my property…”
b.SPECIAL BEQUEST directs that Montini Catholic High School is to receive a
specific piece of property: “I give…500 shares of XYZ stock/securities to Montini
Catholic High School.”
c.RESIDUAL BEQUEST designates all or a portion of whatever remains after all
debts, taxes, expenses, and other bequests have been paid: “I give…50 percent
of the rest, residue, and remainder of my Estate to Montini Catholic High School.”
d.CONTINGENT BEQUEST takes effect only under certain conditions:”In the even my
spouse does not survive me, I give to Montini Catholic High School the sum of $ ….”
As always, in such personal matters, you should consult with your own financial advisor
or your own attorney in order to learn more about the benefits of such charitable
giving as it relates to your own very specific circumstances and personal situation.
2010-2011ANNUAL APPEAL
You’re Busy -
So Let’s Keep
this Simple.
This year, Montini Catholic’s Annual Appeal
received a Challenge Grant:
Every dollar raised from new donors
will be matched, dollar-for-dollar up to
$20,000
So when you give, its like you’re giving twice!
Here is how we spend your hard-earned money: Great teachers - really great
teachers. While you are at work, wouldn’t you want your child taught by a
teacher who couldn’t wait to get to their classroom each morning? Wouldn’t
you want the very best computers, the latest SmartBoards in the Montini
Catholic classrooms? Wouldn’t you want the athletic coach to have the best
equipment, safety gear, and weight training programs? No doubt you’d like
your children to have a fi ne arts program in which they actually perform in
front of a live audience. You know something? We want that, too.
Please consider making a gift
to our 2010-2011 Annual
Appeal. In just under three
minutes, you can donate by
visiting wwww.montini.org
Alumni News
Montini Catholic High School 2010-2011
CHILDREN of ofALUMNI
The tradition of children of alumni attending the same high school as one and/or both of their parents is a hallmark of most private
schools and it is certainly alive and well at Montini Catholic High School. 74 children of alumni, which represents close to 10% of
the total student body, presently attend Montini Catholic for the 2010/11 school year. The children of alumni come to Montini
Catholic from over 20 towns in DuPage and Cook Counties. The high number of alumni students attending Montini Catholic has
been attributed to the number of alumni who still reside in neighboring towns, such as Lombard, Downers Grove, Oak Brook and
Glen Ellyn. With the service of an expanded student transportation program introduced four years ago, Mr. James Segredo, President
of Montini Catholic noted, “Not only are we seeing more children attend from our neighboring parishes, but we have seen a
signifi cant increase from the Lisle, Naperville, Elmhurst and Westchester areas due to the private transportation program that we
have established for the suburban towns west and east of Montini Catholic. As a family-centered school, it is great to see so many
alumni continue the legacy by having their son or daughter attend our school. I also believe it refl ects on the excellent education
they experienced as Montini Catholic students. Not only do their sons and/or daughters participate in the Montini Catholic experience,
but in a way, the parent(s) also come back and participate in the Montini Catholic experience again, but, obviously, in a diff erent
way. Having alumni come back to campus and participate in our school community just makes our school community stronger
and more energetic!”
