what sanctions exist in Sweden?<br />

The sanctions that can be imposed by the courts are fine,<br />

imprison ment, conditional sentence, probation and committal<br />

for special care. A conditional sentence can be combined with a<br />

community service scheme and probation can be combined with<br />

several different schemes.<br />

what sanctions are implemented by the Prison<br />

and Probation Service?<br />

The Prison and Probation Service implements prison, conditional<br />

sentence with community service, probation, probation with<br />

community service and probation with specific treatment plan –<br />

contract treatment and probation associated with imprisonment.<br />

Prison<br />

A custodial sentence may last from two weeks to ten years. In the<br />

case of repeat offences and combined sentence for several offences,<br />

the sentence may be up to 18 years.<br />

A prisoner serving a life sentence cannot be released until<br />

the sentence has been commuted to a specific period by Örebro<br />

District Court. The client may apply for a change to a specific<br />

length of sentence after having served at least ten yeras of his or<br />

her sentence.<br />

Intensive supervision<br />

Intensive supervision with electronic monitoring (tagging) is an<br />

alternative way of serving a prison sentence. The convicted person<br />

is monitored 24 hours a day with the aid of a transmitter attached<br />
