work. Persons sentenced to a maximum of six months can apply for<br />

intensive supervision.<br />

Conditional sentence<br />

This sentence is applied mainly when a person has committed a<br />

crime of a one-off nature. This sentence involves a trial period of two<br />

years during which the convicted person shall be conscientious. This<br />

sanction may be combined with community service and a fine. If<br />

the convicted person fails to behave as expected, the sentence can be<br />

commuted into a different sanction.<br />

Probation<br />

Probation is a non-custodial sentence. Probation lasts three years with<br />

supervision during the first year. This sanction may be combined with<br />

imprisonment for up to three months, community service, a fine or<br />

other specific scheme. Misbehaviour can lead to the period of probation<br />

and supervision being extended.<br />

Community service<br />

Probation or a conditional sentence can be combined with an order to<br />

perform community service and unpaid work in a charitable association<br />

or organisation. The period of community service may be from<br />

40 to 240 hours.<br />

Probation with specific treatment plan – contract treatment<br />

Contract treatment is an alternative to imprisonment for up to<br />

approximately two years. It is a condition of this sentence that<br />

substance abuse (or other circumstances that may require treatment)<br />

contributed significantly to the criminal offence. Treatment is given<br />

in an institution or an open clinic.<br />
