non-custodial care what is the task of non-custodial care? Non-custodial care covers clients who have been sentenced to probation, community service or contract treatment or who have been conditionally released or have been tagged as an alternative to a custodial sentence. The probation service also performs initial personal investigations of suspects before court proceedings on behalf of the court. The probation service has 34 offices. During 2011, an average of approximately 14,000 persons were subject to non-custodial care. what is a personal investigation? The court performs a personal investigation so as to be able to impose an appropriate sanction if a person is convicted of the offence he or she is suspected of. In a personal investigation, the probation service investigates the person’s social situation, the risk of repeat offences and whether a non-custodial sentence is appropriate in the event of a conviction. The probation service considers whether the person is capable of performing community service and whether the circumstances warrant contract treatment. what does the probation service do in remand institutions? The probation service is responsible for coordinating the execution of the client’s sentence and this work is begun as early as the remand stage. The probation service also performs personal investigations of remand clients. what does the probation service do in custodial institutions? In Sweden, those serving custodial sentences are given conditional release after serving two thirds of their sentence. The client remains 11

This is planned and performed by the transport service. The Prison and Probation Service’s transport service performs transport assignments both within Sweden and abroad, not just for the Prison and Probation Service, but also for the police and social services, for example. The transport service is responsible for the Prison and Probation Service’s transport requirements abroad and for transport within Sweden between custodial and remand institutions. Responsibility for other forms of transport, such as to the courts or for hospital visits, is part of the normal activity of the custodial and remand institutions. how many transports are performed each year?
