probation service is responsible for coordinating the planning of the
execution of the client’s sentence and plans the release together with
the client and the contact person at the institution.
Are there different forms of probation?
In addition to probation alone, the court can impose probation
combined with contract treatment or community service. Probation
can also be combined with schemes for care and treatment.
who is sentenced to probation?
During 2011, approximately 7,700 clients were sentenced to probation.
The most common offences are narcotics crimes or smuggling,
mistreatment and drink-driving. Of those sentenced to probation in
2011, the greater part, 4,400 persons, served probation alone, while
1,250 had probation combined with contract treatment, about 1,500
had probation combined with community service and about 300 had
probation combined with imprisonment.
Lay probation officers
Approximately 50 per cent of those on probation have lay probation
officers. The lay probation officer complements the work of the officers
of the probation service, who always have ultimate responsibility.
If no layman is appointed, the officer of the probation service also
assumes the role of supervising probation officer.
what is a lay probation officer?
A lay probation officer is a private individual who devotes part of his
or her spare time to supporting, guiding and encouraging the client so
as to help prevent a recurrence of the offence or abuse. No specialist
knowledge is required, but an interest in people and social issues is
important.
