CONTRACT TREATMENT
what does contract treatment involve?
Contract treatment is referred to in legislation as probation with a
specific plan of treatment. Contract treatment may be relevant where
abuse/dependency or other circumstances requiring treatment have
contributed significantly to the criminal offence. Instead of receiving
a custodial sentence, the person can receive treatment for his or her
problem. Contract treatment may correspond to up to two years’
imprisonment. If the client discontinues treatment or otherwise
misbehaves, the sentence can be commuted to imprisonment. In 2011,
1,250 persons commenced contract treatment.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
the court in connection with probation or a conditional sentence.
Community service may be an alternative for those who would otherwise
have been sentenced to shorter prison terms of up to one year.
The alternative prison term is always stated in the sentence and serious
breach of the conditions can lead to the sentence being commuted to
imprisonment.
how long is the period of community service?
Between 40 and 240 working hours.
what kind of work is involved?
The work is primarily carried out for charitable institutions or other
non-profit making organisations. Exceptionally, community service
may be in public sector activities or in work teams organised by the
social services.
