what is the age distribution of prison inmates?
Prison inmates are aged from 15 years upwards. The largest age
group, at 22 per cent, is 35 to 44 year-olds.
how many are aged under 21?
On 1 October 2011, 189 persons aged between 15 and 20 were
serving prison sentences. Few persons aged under 18 receive
prison sentences. They can instead be sentenced to compulsory
care under the National Board of Institutional Care.
how many are foreign citizens?
On 1 October 2011, 28 per cent of all those serving prison sentences
were foreign citizens. The remainder were Swedish citizens.
There are no statistics showing how many are immigrants or have
a foreign background.
how many of the inmates are women?
On 1 October 2011, 303 women were serving prison sentences,
approximately 6 per cent of the total number of inmates.
what do contact personnel do?
Officers of the prison service are responsible for several clients
as contact personnel. This involves working with inmates on
planned leave, visits and other activities during execution of the
sentence. This is documented in the plan for the execution of the
sentence.
