Specific release measures
The purpose of specific release measures is to reduce the
risk of an inmate reoffending and to facilitate rehabilitation into
society. There are four kinds of specific release measures:
Permission parole means that an inmate is permitted to be outside
the prison during the daytime to perform work, receive education or
training or take part in specially organised activities.
Residential care means that an inmate stays in a family home or
residential care home and takes part in treatment.
Halfway house means that an inmate stays, under his or her
own responsibility, in an environment that is more open than a
low-security prison. The inmate also receives support and assistance
that can be offered by the Prison and Probation Service and other
authorities. There are three halfway houses in Sweden. One of them
(in Malmö) is run by the Prison and Probation Service and the other
two (in Stockholm and Göteborg) are privately run.
Extended parole means that the inmate serves the remainder of the
sentence at home under controlled conditions (including intensive
supervision with electronic tagging). The inmate shall perform
work, receive education or training, receive treatment or take part
in specially organised activities.
