Here We Go!!
Welcome back! A month in and we are
certainly off to the races as our front cover attests!
Our grade 7’s have demonstrated they are ready to
be here and our ‘vets’ – the 8’s and 9’s are leading by
example! It was really terrific to walk the halls once
again over this opening month talking to students,
discussing the year ahead, watching the staff do
what it does and knowing that we have something
good going on here at Ecole Selkirk Junior High. A
great deal of hard work goes into success and the
students and staff are up to it.
To be honest we are looking at a very busy
year ahead with a lot of what you expect (sports,
drama, band) as well as some new ideas too (fashion
show, Ottawa trip). And let’s not forget some events
back after a few years off (ACTION! 2013, BOSS
Guitar Auction 2.0).
I’d like to welcome our new Vice-Principal Mr.
Skarban along with a number of new faces to the
ESJH staff team and wish those who have moved on
the very best of luck in their new assignments and
schools.
And if you are interested in getting a bit
more involved in ESJH and knowing what’s up please
feel free to come out to the Parent Advisory Council
meetings. We have had some great discussions and
none of them have been about fund raising so feel
free to come out to talk about your child’s education.

On the Cover
The ESJH Cross-Country team graces
the front cover for our first newsletter
of 2012-13. This photo was taken by Mr.
Skarban at their first meet. A number
of the athletes did really well but more
importantly these student-athletes
represented ESJH with sportsmanship
and class. It should also be noted that all
our volleyball teams are now rolling and
the cheerleaders are also getting ready
to start their year off as they wrap up
try-outs. We welcome all parents to
come to the games and meets and
competitions.
At ESJH we take the safety of your children very seriously and hold fire drills and
practice Code Red and Code Greens several times during the year. It was nice to know
that while it was only a false alarm our Selkirk Fire Department responded quickly to he
school to make sure we were all okay!
MEET THE STAFF NIGHT
(a bit of a mis-step)
Thank you to all the parents who came out for our Meet
the Staff Night. Unfortunately the numbers were quite low
in comparison to the last few years. I was sure that we
had done what we normally done in terms of advertising
– alerting the students and putting a notice on our school
sign. HOWEVER, it was eventually brought to my attention
by the PAC that last year we had in fact used the
SynerVoice phone system which I thought we had not
used. This was most likely the cause of the lack of
numbers and I apologize for my mistake. I further
apologize for being so ‘darned sure’ we had not used
the system last year when in fact we had. In the future
we will once again use the system and may in fact use it
a bit more for other events.

Band News
Congratulations to our band program on a successful ‘First Note’ night. Always great to see our grade 7’s
working on the beginning steps of mastering their instruments. A big thank you to the clinicians and band
teachers that come out from across our division to help out with the event. Another huge thank you goes to the
Band Parent Association who work tirelessly on behalf of the band students, Mr. Werbicki and all the parents to
make sure that money keeps coming in to help cut costs for many of the students. If you are interested in
getting involved please contact Mr. Werbicki here at the school.

On September 13 at the “Meet the Staff Night,” I found myself remembering.
The three parent volunteers had the PAC info table covered and it left me
with time to think. I thought about my first year at ESJH when 7 or so
dedicated parents met regularly to get the PAC off the ground. That group
made a difference! Last year in 2011-12, we had 27 different parents attend
PAC meetings with an average attendance of 11. Now the PAC isn't about
numbers but each of those numbers represents a parent or guardian who is
making the PAC a viable part of ESJH. Thanks to all of you!
Our first meeting for this year was on Thursday, September 27. I started the
meeting with a vision of what our PAC is all about. It can be summed up
with three words starting with the same letter: interested parents and
guardians having an opportunity to gain important information about our
school and give their valuable input back to the school. The turn-out for the
meeting was great with 13 parents and Mr. Davies attending. Our main focus
was finding out what's going on in our very active school. If you find that
your Junior Higher doesn't share as many details about what's going on at
school, you are not alone. The PAC tries to facilitate Home-School
Communication through our monthly meetings and our email list. Our next
meeting is Tuesday, October 23 at 6:30 pm in the Staff Room and you
are all welcome to come. If you'd like to join the email list, please contact

X-country à Popes Hill
Le 24 septembre 2012! C’était
un jour vraiment froid avec du
vent mais tout le monde a
continué à courir le plus fort
possible. Pour les filles du grade
7, Lindsey Hopkins a pris la
première place, Renéé P. en
deuxième place et Cassidy I. en
troisième place. Pour les garçons
de grade 7, Qwynn B. en
première place, Nick Trudel en
deuxième place et en troisième
place, Timothy J.. Bravo tout le
monde!

Volleyball
Le Volleyball est vraiment
fun et amusant. J'aime le
volleyball parce-que c'est
un de mes sports favoris.
J'aime jouer le volleyball
avec mes amis. Je joue le
volleyball 1-3 fois par
semaines sur une équipe
avec beaucoup de mes
amis dans grade 7. J'ai
joué au volleyball pendant
environ 2 ans maintenant,
et je pense que le
volleyball est mon
nouveau sport favori. Le
volleyball est fun parceque,
c'est facile est pas
difficile de tous. Je suis
content que j'ai joindre
Volleyball, c'est vraiment
amusant.

Volleyball
Quand tu vas au volleyball, tu
rencontres des nouveaux amis. C’est
un des meilleurs moments de ta vie.
La première fois que tu vas à une
pratique de volleyball, c’’est un peu
énervant. Mais la deuxième fois
c’’est beaucoup plus de plaisir!
Quand tu es dans le jeu tu as une
fraction de seconde pour trois
options. Tu peux faire beaucoup de
différents choix dans le volleyball.
Ca ouvre beaucoup de différentes
portes dans ta vie. Je suggère de
nous joindre!

Volleyball
Le Volleyball est un sport très
amusant. C’est un sport ou tu dois
essayer de faire ton mieux pour être
bon. C’est un sport d’équipe. La
première pratique était très
amusante. On a appris des habiletés
de base comme la manchette et la
passe. J’aime beaucoup le volleyball.
C’est un jeu que tu peux jouer avec
ou sans filet de volleyball!

Cheerleading- Meneurs de claque
Cette année l'équipe de meneurs de claque est entraînée par la magnifique Mme Shayla Kostiuk. Elle
était une meneuse de claque pour l'équipe des Blue bombers, elle entraîne ici depuis16 ans! Il y avait
une épreuve de sélection ici à Esjh Mardi et Jeudi dans le gymnase de 3:30-5:15. Ms. Kostiuk nous a
montré une danse mardi, et jeudi les filles vont faire cette danse et une danse originale devant des
juges. Nous vous souhaitons la bonne chance!
Meneuse de claque

Heir j'ai été aux épreuves de sélection de meneuse de claque et c'était vraiment difficile. J'ai pensé
que ce serait facile mais c'était une des choses les plus difficiles que j'ai fait. J'espère que je réussis!
Je dois pratiquer beaucoup. Moi et mes amies ont essayé. 47 personnes ont essayé et seulement 20
personnes vont êtres acceptées. 27 personnes vont être coupées!

The Boss kids and teachers on their day off – almost all of
them came in on the in-service day on September 14 th to
work on guitars.
BOSS Guitars at It Again!
Over 25 students and two teachers are at it again –
saving the world one guitar at a time. Over $65 000 has
been raised for over 30 charities and other organizations
over the past two years. A large chunk of that money has
stayed local supporting the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko
Scholarship Fund, the purchase of band instruments and
PA equipment for ESJH’s performing arts programing.
Our next guitar auction will be May 30 th at the Selkirk
Rec Centre with guitars signed by the likes of Don
Cherry, Rush, Steve Martin, Jeff Beck, Al Gore and
Steve Nash among many, many others.
