Our crushing plants have the important task of utilizing
and refining the waste rock which is generated
as a by-product during ore extraction.
• We crush all types of ballast for our
concrete plants.
• We also crush additives for pellet production.
• Ore products, like KMR and pellet fines,
are crushed for delivery to the external market.
We also extract ore for LKAB’s pellet production,
partly by ore recovery and partly through the new
open-pit mines.
Dolomite is one of the main additives used by LKAB.
We extract dolomite by open-pit mining in Masugnsbyn.
Our concrete factories supply shotcrete and structural
concrete for LKAB’s mines, as well as concrete
for external construction work. We carry out rock
reinforcement in the LKAB mines and in external mines,
and as a service for the construction industry.
LKAB Mekaniska supplies services within mechanical
construction, repair and maintenance to LKAB,
to external customers and to our own facilities.
LKAB Kimit produces and supplies explosives for
our and LKAB’s underground work, to open-pit mines
and to external projects, such as road, railway
and tunnel construction.

CRUSHING PLANTS
During mining, large amounts of waste rock are
produced as a by-product. We utilize the waste
rock and crush it into several different fractions.
The crushed gangue is used for concrete and
asphalt production and for various construction
projects. We have our own crushing plants at
LKAB’s industrial areas in Kiruna, Svappavaara
and Malmberget and crush everything from rock
to pellet fines. We crush a total of about 15 million
tonnes annually.
At our facilities we also crush the additives
used in LKAB’s pellet production, i.e. dolomite,
limestone, olivine, and quartzite. The dolomite
is extracted from LKAB’s open pit mine in Masugnsbyn.
CRUSHED PRODUCTS
LKAB Berg & Betong offers a wide range of crushed
products, among them CE-marked standard
fractions. Also non-standard fractions can be
produced on request. Commissioned by LKAB,
we crush second-rate pellets to pellet fines,
which is a sought-after product on the world
market. We crush approximately 800 000 tonnes
of pellet fines per year. The hard KMR-stone is
produced in several fractions and the final pro-
duct is delivered as ballast for the manufacture
of heavy concrete. We produce about 500 000 -
800 000 tonnes of KMR per year.
CRUSHED ROCK BALLAST
Traditionally, natural gravel is used in the production
of concrete. Since natural gravel is a nonrenewable
natural resource we are using crushed
rock as ballast material and have developed
an aggregate fraction which closely resembles
natural gravel. This is done by converting the
crushed stone’s elongated and square structure
into the more round structure of natural gravel.
We produce about 300 000 tonnes of concrete
ballast per year.

Ore recycling is an environmentally friendly way
to recover residual ore from up to 100-year-old
waste rock tips. In 2009 we began extracting
ore from waste rock tips in the mining areas of
Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget. We bring
in approximately 10 million tonnes of gangue for
crushing and produce about 3 million tonnes of
end product per year.
CONCRETE MAKING IN CLASS 1-FACTORIES
Our modern concrete factories in Kiruna and
Malmberget have the highest production capacity
in Sweden. During the autumn of 2009, we
inaugurated our new concrete factory in Kiruna.
Having previously been located underground,
producing about 40 cubic metres of concrete per
hour, our concrete factory has now moved up to
ground level and nearly tripled its capacity.
Together, our factories produce about 280
000 cubic metres of concrete annually. This corresponds
to 10 % of the total concrete production
in Sweden. All production is carried out according
to the quality system of SFF (Swedish Ready
Mixed Concrete Association), which means that
our concrete factories are so-called class 1-factories.
Our main customer, LKAB, purchases approximately
80% of our annual concrete production.
In addition, we sell to other contractors such as
NCC, Skanska and Finnish Lemminkäinen, as
well as directly to private buyers. LKAB Berg &
Betong has about 100 employees at the concrete
and rock department, 70 people working in Kiruna
and 30 in Malmberget.
WORLD’S LARGEST PRODUCER OF SHOTCRETE
All concrete used in rock reinforcement in the
LKAB mines is manufactured by LKAB Berg &
Betong in our concrete factories in Kiruna and
Malmberget. Together, our factories produce
over 200 000 cubic metres of shotcrete per year,
which makes us the world’s largest producer of
shotcrete. The concrete used in rock reinforcement
is reinforced with steel or plastic fibres
which are mixed directly with the concrete in our
concrete factories.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Product development of concrete qualities is a
never-ending task for a large supplier like LKAB
Berg & Betong. In our laboratory, we continuously
work to improve and develop concrete qualities
by carrying out durability tests, fibre tests and
more.
CONCRETE PRODUCTS AND GRADES
In addition to standard concrete and shotcrete, we
produce custom made qualities, such as steel fibre
reinforced concrete, shaft restoration concrete,
heavy concrete with iron ore ballast and more. All
our products are ready-mixed and conform to the
requirements of manufacturing class 1.

We Run LKAB’s Open-Pit Mines
WE GROW ALONGSIDE MALMFÄLTEN
After managing the operations of LKAB’s dolomite
mine in Masugnsbyn for several years it was
natural for us to also take on the responsibility of
running the extensive operation in Gruvberget in
Svappavaara, where the new open-pit mine began
production in June 2010.
Svappavaara is home also to the Mertainen
and Leveäniemi deposits where production is expected
start in 2014 and 2015. Together, the three
deposits are estimated to generate about 15 million
tonnes of iron ore concentrate per year.
GRUVBERGET
The open-pit mine Gruvberget in Svappavaara
is LKAB’s first new mine in 50 years and part of
Europe’s largest iron ore project. LKAB Berg &
Betong is responsible for the entire mining operation,
from solid rock to finished iron ore concentrate.
We extract 8 million tonnes of waste
rock and 2 million tonnes of magnetite ore in
Gruvberget per year.
THE OPEN-PIT MINE IN MERTAINEN
Mining at LKAB’s deposit in Mertainen is estimated
to begin in 2014 with full production expected
to be reached in the following year. Approximately
30 million tonnes of rock will be extracted
annually.
THE OPEN-PIT MINE IN LEVEÄNIEMI
Mining in Leveäniemi is estimated to begin during
2015. Approximately 20 million tonnes of rock
will be extracted annually.
THE DOLOMITE MINE IN MASUGNSBYN

We blast and crush the mineral dolomite which
LKAB uses as additive in pellet production. The
mineral is extracted from the dolomite mine in
Masugnsbyn where we extract and crush approximately
180 000 tonnes of dolomite per year
for LKAB.

Rock Work
The majority of the rock work we perform is the
rock reinforcement we deliver to LKAB’s underground
mines in Kiruna and Malmberget and to
Zinkgruvan Mining AB in Askersund.
Through our comprehensive program for rock
and concrete, we are able to provide an effective
rock reinforcement service. The ballast we use
to produce shotcrete is crushed at our crushing
facilities and the shotcrete is produced in our
concrete plants. We also carry out research with
the goal of optimizing the quality of our product.
A SECURED ROCK EQUALS SAFE MINING
Rock reinforcement is a prerequisite for efficient
production in underground mines. Shotcreting
reinforces the structure and prevents the loosening
of rock, a measure which contributes to
safety. The extensive rock reinforcement performed
by LKAB Berg & Betong is an important
part of LKAB’s safety work. During rock reinforcement
we are responsible for all operations, including
netting and cable bolting.
SPECIALISED EQUIPMENT
Our machines are designed to be as effective as
possible. We have purpose-built vehicles for the
supply of shotcrete, gunning equipment, equipment
for dry mix spraying and injecting, and
bolting aggregates. All equipment is environmentally
certified.
PRODUCTION BLASTING
LKAB Berg & Betong is a competitive supplier
of services in drilling, blasting and crushing. In
2010, we performed contract work for the Swedish
Transport Administration, under the project
New Railway Kiruna, where we broke loose and
excavated 800 000 tonnes of rock for the new rail
routing around the city.

We also carry out drifting and perform contract
drifting work at LKAB’s underground mine in Kiruna.
The assignment consists of completing approx.
4 000 metres of tunnelling per year which
is subsequently delivered to LKAB as completed

LKAB Kimit
Our affiliated company LKAB Kimit AB is a leading
supplier of explosives and explosive products.
LKAB’s demand for high quality, efficient and
dependable explosives in the mines in Malmfälten
was the origin of the formation of Kimit AB
in 1975. In Kimit’s explosives plant in Kiruna over
20 000 tonnes of explosives are produced annually,
which corresponds to about one third of
Sweden’s total production. LKAB is the largest
customer, accounting for 80% of orders. Remaining
customers are found in the mining and construction
industry, primarily in Sweden and Finland.
Since 2003, LKAB Kimit is part of the LKAB
Berg & Betong group.
LKAB Kimit produces two types of waterresistant
emulsion explosives; Kimulux SS and
Kimulux R, which is pumped into the blast holes
using a charging vehicle. Kimulux SS is used in
drift mining and road and tunnel construction,
while Kimulux R is specially developed and adapted
for upward blasting, as in the case of LKAB’s
sub-level caving.
LKAB Kimit also develops and oversees the
manufacture of different types of charging vehicles.

LKAB Mekaniska AB is a wholly-owned subsidiary
of LKAB Berg & Betong and a comprehensive
workshop company, offering the entire supply
chain from planning to final inspection. The company
provides everything from own product development
to subcontract work, and provides
finished products as well as detailing for the mining,
engineering, and space industries. Clients
include Esrange, Atlas Copco, GIA, K Industrier
and NASA. LKAB is the largest customer and accounts
for approximately 60% of assignments.
LKAB Mekaniska positioned itself early as a

AN INVENTION WHICH OPTIMIZES
THE USE OF WEAR PLATE
LKAB Berg & Betong’s subsidiary, LKAB Mekaniska,
has developed a wear plate bolting system
which reduces weights and costs, and offers a
better environmental alternative.
A FLUSH SURFACE FOR MINIMAL WEAR
The WRC System® consists of a conical bolt that
sits flush with the surface of the wear plate. The
even surface contributes to a more uniform wear
and reduces the risk of wear parts loosening due
to worn off bolt heads.
The WRC-bolt can easily be cut off during plate
change outs and the choice of cutting techniques
and materials prevents the conical bolt
from rotating in the hole, making tightening from
the nut side easier. WRC System® is compatible
with a wide variety of steel grades and thicknesses.
