66. Invocation to Poseidon
Hail to thee, mighty Poseidon,
Earth Shaker, Sea Breaker
Come to us from the salty depths,
from your distant wine-dark
Aegean home.
Come with your bands of mermaid
Nereids splashing their tails in
water ballet.
Ride the white horses of crashing surf
to our shores.
Bring us the laughter of dolphins,
the song of whales
the salt tears of the crying seagulls.
White-bearded, green-eyed Lord of Ocean,
wake up now and be watchful!
You who bears the trident wand of power;
protector of the shoals of fishes;
Father of sea horses, jellyfish,
anemones and starfish.
You nurtured and fed us before ever
we had backbones.
You were our Lord, when our home
was the sea.
Long have we forgotten you and
forgotten our watery origins.
Long have we taken your gifts and
reaped your bounty
Without calling your name in
simple gratitude.
We are awake, Now! We will remember you,
Now! We offer respect, Now!
Raise your booming voice, come
Blow the wreathed horn of Triton
Warn all the creatures of your vastest deeps
to beware the curse:
Of the driftnet, of the whaling ship,
of the oil rig,
And of all those who would stripmine
the very source of life itself.
We join with you, O Ancient One,
in a prayer, a pact, and a pledge:
We will aid you in your hour of need;
we will help protect your precious realm,
As long as we have salt water
in our veins.
Evoé Poseidon! So Mote It Be!
—Morning Glory Zell
67. Invocation to the God of Love
Hail to thee, O God as Lover
Over land you gently hover
While caresses heal and cover
Mother Earth with love.
You who come down into Earth to rejoin Her
You who rise up yet again to rejoice with Her
Thou who art wildness, untamed and free
The fire of the sun, the storm of the sea
You who dance to the sound of the flute
Thou who art found in the seed of the fruit
Come to us now by light and by love
Join together below and above
Make the magic union be
Balanced in heart—both tender and free
Bring us your magical, nurturing touch
Healing the Earth who has given so much
Long she awaits you to walk hand in hand
Over the womb of the promised land.
Bellenos, Kernunnos, Osiris, Pan
Bring us the Sacred part that is Man
Father and Lover, helper and mate
Gently weaving your spells of fate
Bring us your light, rekindled anew—
Bring us the joy in love that is You.
—Anodea Judith 4/85
68. Invoking the Dark Lord
Darker than a cavern’s heart;
Deeper than the blackest hole.
Darker than the Night Wind’s breath;
An emptiness that shapes your soul.
Rustle of the ebon wings;
In shadow where He reigns supreme.
The Jewel of Death in time he brings;
Upon a throne of Adamantine.
He holds a chalice filled with blood,
Of hearts that ceased their pulsing flood.
Black leather, Black feather...
Radiant heart of obsidian fire;
Absent light that draws desire.
The silent secret smile of He
Who is the Midnight Sun.
The last thing we shall ever see,
When all our dancing days are done.
The bitter smell of Absinthe
A cord of spider silk
The smoky sound of laughter
A taste of Raven’s milk...
