44. To the Crone
Hail to Thee
Dark One
Wise One
Crone
Hail to Thee who dares to see
Who draws the knife and severs life
And takes away her children
To her wintry dark home
Hekate
Rhiannon
Wise One
Come!
And share with us your wisdom
In the darkening sun.
Show us how deep wet darkness
Leads to our rebirth;
Let us see the ancient wisdom
Buried in the Earth.
Old Woman
Wise Woman
Grandmother
Crone!
Lead us in your meditation
When our work is done
Yet spare us of the knife too soon
Give us time to see
The meaning of your Mysteries
So Mote It Be!
—Anodea Judith
5. Goddess Invocations
-T he Moon Goddess
45. Moon-Child
Diana Tana Dana
Artemis Britomartis
Thou art this:
The maiden crescent…
…growing.
Your naked splendor makes the heavens
Blush lavender.
Deepening to violet blue
Cloaking you in a velvet mantle…
…flowing.
Bend your slender silver bow
Let fly your arrows
Like shooting stars
Across the early evening sky…
…falling.
Forever stalking our hearts
Divine Lady of the Beasts
Your cats, hounds, owls and deer
Pursue secrets through dappled shadows…
…calling
Moon-eyed Mistress of Wilderness
Grant us the thirteen gifts
Which free us from slavery
And reveal thy ancient Mystery…
…teaching.
Daughter Goddess, Amazon Huntress,
You have captured our imagination
After all this time, now
We turn again to You…
…beseeching.
—Morning Glory Zell, 1978
46. Charge of the Moon Goddess
I am She who ere the Earth was formed
Was Rhea, Binah, Ge—
I am that soundless, boundless, bitter sea
Out of whose depths life swells eternally.
Astarte, Aphrodite, Ashtoreth—
Giver of Life and Bringer of Death
Hera in heaven, on Earth Persephone,
Diana of the Waves and Hecate
All these I am, and They are seen in me.
The hour of the high full Moon draws near;
I hear the invoking words—
“Shaddai El Chai and Rhea, Binah, Ge.”
I come unto the Priest who calleth me.
I am the veiled Isis of the shadows of
the Sanctuary.
I am She that moveth as a shadow
Beyond the tides of death and birth.
I am She that cometh forth by night
And no man may see my face.
I am older than time and beloved of the Gods.
I am that soundless, boundless, bitter sea,
All things in the end shall come to Me.
Mine is the Kingdom of Persephone—
I am the star that rises from the twilight sea.
I bring men dreams that rule their destiny,
I am the eternal Woman, I am She!
