50 Creating Circles & Ceremonies
Songs & Chants
(HOME is a bardic tradition, and many of
our rituals are designed to be sung in whole
or in part. Here are our favorite Quartercalling
songs and chants. Unfortunately, we
cannot include here the musical scoring for
these. Some of them, however, have been recorded
on tapes and CDs, and we highly recommend
you get these and learn the music—
see the Resources section of the Appendix.)
28. Invocation
Soaring Eagle on the wing
From your lair new visions bring
Lift our voices as we sing
Enter us, Powers of the East.
Mighty Lion of the Sun
Burn our heart and will as one
Flaming strength and passion
Enter us, Powers of the South.
Ancient Serpent of the deep
In your waters let us weep
Wave your mysteries here to sleep
Enter us, Powers of the West.
Dark Bull of the Mother Earth
Winter cave that gives us birth
Feed our knowledge of your worth
Enter us, Powers of the North.
Hear us, Spirit!
—Moira Ashleigh, 1992
29. Quarter Calling
Winged One, Spirit of Air
Your children invite you here
Come on the winds of the sunrise
Give us your vision so clear
You are the gentle Spring breezes
You are the glory of flight
Winged One, Spirit of Air
Keep us wise through our rite!
Fierce one, Spirit of Fire
Your children invite you here
Come with your blazing noon passion
Banish all sorrow and fear
You are the flickering candle
You are the bonfire bright
Fierce one, Spirit of Fire
Keep us brave through our rite!
Swift One, Spirit of Water
Your children invite you here
Come on the waves of the sunset
Bring to us joy and good cheer
You are the well of deep comfort
You are the crashing waves’ height
Swift One, Spirit of Water,
Keep us sure through our rite!
Hooved One, Spirit of Earth
Your children invite you here
Come from the mountains of midnight
With new strength and vigor appear
You are the field of our pleasure
Your are the source of our might
Hooved One, Spirit of Earth
Keep us strong through our rite!
—Isaac Bonewits, 1992
30. Take Me Down
Ch: Take me down in your embrace,
Where I see my truest face.
Take me down into my soul,
Take me down and make me whole.
Where the Morning Star arises
I can see Her spirit fly
Take me down, take me down…
Where She spreads the dawning day
Across the crystal sky
Take me down, take me down…
In childlike trust and innocence
We face the Southern land
Take me down, take me down…
Where my Lady rides a tiger,
Golden apples in her hand
Take me down, take me down…
Where the setting sun descends
Behind the belly of the Earth
Take me down, take me down…
There I look within the Mystery
Of death and rebirth
Take me down, take me down…
Old Woman of the North,
She rides Her broom across the sky
Take me down, take me down…
With Her basket full of diamonds
And a twinkle in Her eye.
Take me down, take me down…
—Bird Brother
