234 Creating Circles & Ceremonies
Chant: We are one with our Mother, we are one with the Earth
We are one with each other by our lives, by our birth!
(As the following Guardians make their appearance, the Green Man stays in background,
moving always widdershins so as to be opposite them in the Circle. He then comes forward
and leads audience in the following chants.)
VIII. The Guardian of the North
(A shadowy figure appears, draped shapelessly in black, and holding a Unicorn medicine
skull in front of its face)
Halt, strangers! None pass here save by leave of me! I am the Guardian of the Northern
Gate, and I could shatter your works with earthquakes and bury you beneath avalanches!
But I will give you one chance—you may pass unharmed if you can answer my riddle:
What is the fruit of birth? (Audience response: “Death!”)
So, death you say? That is correct. But you are fools to enter here. Who are you and
why come you this way? (Audience response.) Well, you may pass, but you’ll be sorry.
Yet, I will grant you a boon—a pentacle of the Earth that you might retain your materiality.
It is a symbol of your inner magickal heritage. (Passes pentacle paten into Circle.)
Go now upon your quest; so mote it be!
Chant: Down, down, down, down,
Decomposing, recomposing…
IX. The Guardian of the West
(A shadowy figure appears, draped shapelessly in black, and holding a seadragon medicine
skull in front of its face.)
Halt, strangers! None pass here save by leave of me! I am the Guardian of the Western
Gate, and I could drown you in the watery deeps and the waves would wash over your bones!
But I will give you one chance—you may pass unharmed if you can answer my riddle:
What is as old as the sea? (Audience response: “Death!”)
So, death you say? That is correct. But you are fools to enter here. Who are you and
why come you this way? (Audience response.) Well, you may pass, but you’ll be sorry.
Yet, I will grant you a boon—a chalice of Water that you might retain your emotions. It is
a symbol of your inner magickal heritage. (Passes chalice into Circle.)
Go now upon your quest; so mote it be!
Chant: Down, down, down, down,
Decomposing, recomposing…
X. The Guardian of the South
(A shadowy figure appears, draped shapelessly in black, and holding a seadragon medicine
skull in front of its face.)
Halt, strangers! None pass here save by leave of me! I am the Guardian of the Southern
Gate, and I could blast you with lightning and consume you with unquenchable flames!
But I will give you one chance—you may pass unharmed if you can answer my riddle:
What is the flower of sacrifice? (Audience response: “Death!”)
So. That is correct. But you are fools to enter here. Who are you and why come you this
way? (Audience response.)
Well, you may pass, but you’ll be sorry. Let me grant you a boon—a sword of Fire that you
might retain your power. It is a symbol of your inner magickal heritage. (Passes sword into circle.)
Go now upon your quest; so mote it be!
Chant: Down, down, down, down,
Decomposing, recomposing…
