172 Creating Circles & Ceremonies into the sky. This far above the low atmosphere, the details of the Earth begin to recede. Beyond the atmosphere and into near space you continue traveling: now at amazing speed the solar system passes, the arm of our galaxy – our entire galaxy – many, many galaxies, and finally eternal space. Quietly remain here for a time that feels right to you. Retrace your travel, returning toward Earth as you are ready. Return to the room your body occupies, and back above your body. Breathe yourself into your nostrils now as the particles you know are here. Fill your body with your consciousness in every cell, now enlivened with the breath and completely within the body. Gradually awaken your muscles by some small movement until you are ready to rise. Stand up as you are called to and stretch—with your arms in the air reach the farthest places as they all touch you. II. Initiations Arcana Encounter: T he Fool’s Journey By Oberon Here is an initiatory ritual we created on January 22, 1998, for the British TV show, “Desperately Seeking Something.” “The Fool” in this case was Peter, the host of the show, who was traveling the world seeking out all kinds of religious and mystical groups in search of something truly meaningful. Somehow he found us, and brought along the whole crew to do the show. After a few days with us, his producer said, “Well, that’s it, then. We don’t have to look any further!” But this little rite would work very well for an initiation into any metaphysical group. I am omitting the usual Circle casting, invocations, dismissals, etc. and only giving the Working itself: Ten people have previously selected 10 Tarot Trumps, and designed a “Celtic cross reading” using them. Fool is then sent around the Circle to “encounter the Arcana.” As he comes to each of the cardholders, that person stands, saying, “You have now reached the House of _____. The chosen card is _____.” They place the card into position in the reading. Then the cardholder delivers the message, blessing, etc. of that Trump, concluding by giving the Fool a small token of that Trump to place in his bindle. After the whole Circle has been traversed, the Fool is blindfolded by Empress, and led up onto a kitchen stepstool (while people speaking gradually lower themselves to the ground, behind him), and told he must make “a leap of faith” by falling backwards into the Circle.
Book II: Rites & Rituals 173 When he does, he is caught in the arms of all the people, his blindfold is removed, and he is lifted high while people sing “We sing for Mother Earth...” (led by High Priestess). Then he is slowly lowered to the ground as everyone comes to a sitting place. All wait until Fool sits up. Then we cheer, and serve communion feast, sacred bullshit, etc. Coven Nemorensis Oath of Fealty By Anath Stryx The coven is Earth. I plant my feet firmly in the soil of the coven. I am a seed in the coven. My roots will seek nourishment in the coven, and my fruits are offerings to the coven. I place my Earth upon the altar of the coven with Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. The coven is Water. In this Water I am cleansed and refreshed. My body, mind, and spirit may drink deeply of the coven and be purged and enlightened. My tears, blood, and sweat run into and merge with the river formed by my sisters and brothers of the coven. Our river is swept into the Sea of Greater Consciousness. I place my Water upon the altar of the coven with Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. The coven is Fire. I immerse the passion of my faith into the coven. My heart is a sacred altar, upon which the flame of my devotion and desire is kindled. I am warmed, cheered, and guided by the coven. My fears are burned away, my ignorance dispatched, and my will to act is ignited by Fire. My love becomes one with the Fire of the coven. Love is the beacon of the coven. I place my Fire upon the altar of the coven with Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. The coven is Air. The breath of Divinity rushes through the body of the coven and invigorates it. Let my breath be one with the coven. I will utter the power of words with the Air, and my will shall be manifest. I place my Air upon the altar of the coven, so that the coven will rise upon the wings of wind. I do this with Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. The coven is Akasha. Akasha is the life of the coven. Let no act be performed without Spirit, let no intent be designed without Spirit. The coven offers the communion with Spirit as a blessing. Let my offering of Spirit to the coven be accepted at the heart of the coven with Perfect Love and Perfect Trust. It is with these five Elemental offerings placed upon the altar that I seal my oath of fealty to the coven. III. Mysteries Reflection of the Mysteries By Melanie Stoehrer (Redwood Shadowtree) Preparation before ritual: • Find individual, pocket-size mirrors for all participants. You can find these in craft stores. • You will need at least 3 boxes that “nest” within each other. The smallest will contain the mirrors, so plan size accordingly. Put the mirrors inside the smallest box and wrap it with paper. Put this small box in the next largest box, and wrap. Do the same with the final box. • Ritual leaders may wish to teach the group the chant prior to doing this ritual, as well as explain how the energy raised will be “swallowed” back into each person. Ritual: Deity invocations: Isis, Goddess of hope and intuition, Lady of the Stars, heighten our intuition so we may find what we seek! Thoth, God of wisdom and magick, Lord of the Mysteries, give us the wisdom to know
