their lifegiving blessing. Drink deep of the intoxication
of being alive and in love!
CAKES: The grain is the fruit of the Earth,
kindled and ripened by the sun. Each day, we
are blessed with the offered lives of other
children of this rich Earth, so that we may
live. Eat this, knowing the sweetness of living,
the fleetingness of the rich passing taste.

II. Soliloquy on Multiple Marriages

Marriage is a very unique state of being. It defies the law of nature that moves the
individual to struggle against all others to achieve his goal. Instead it calls forth an even
greater evolutionary purpose: the union with others to achieve goals inaccessible to the
individual. The driving force that makes this union possible is love that dissolves all boundaries.
And yet for a marriage to be successful, its partners must retain the boundaries necessary
to a high degree of individuality. This harmonious balance is all about unique and individual
beings choosing to merge their lives and work together. The primary purpose of marriage
is to create a family; families create communities, communities create tribes, and so
goes the human adventure toward unity through diversity.
In nature there are many ways to find a mate and create a family. Human beings have had
many models in the past. However, we live in a time when the single pattern of the monogamous
nuclear family has come to be the only form of marriage allowed in this part of the
world. But evolution may not be outlawed or only outlaws will evolve, so there will always
be those who choose to live lives of adventure and experiment beyond the comfortable
beaten track. Such is the path of those who choose to open their hearts and lives to more
than one lifemate at a time.
A multiple marriage is a wild adventure into unknown territory; it is a bold challenge to
those who deny that such a thing can ever exist. It is a rare creature like a unicorn—composed
of dreams and vision, but also of flesh and blood. Like any other marriage it has its highs and
lows, agonies and ecstasies. A multiple marriage calls for greater levels of commitment to
communication, to tolerance, to trust, and to creativity. The more mates in a marriage, the more
complexity increases, and the more effort that is called forth to answer the various challenges.
