II. Puberty Rites
Rite of Passage, Boys
By Oberon
Traditionally, a boy’s rite of passage from childhood into adolescence occurs at puberty,
when he becomes sexually mature. This time, usually around 12-14 years of age, is marked
most visibly by the development of pubic hair, though technically it is said to be indicated by
“first seed,” or the production of semen.
According to Joseph Campbell, a boy’s rite of passage has several phases:
1. Separation from the mother
2. Isolation and disorientation
3. Vision quest
4. The ordeal
5. Joining the company of men
6. The return
