146 Creating Circles & Ceremonies T he Universal Fire Circle by Jeff Magnus McBride and Abigail Spinner McBride Alchemy is the gentle acceleration of growth through the use of the fire of nature. —Paracelsus (1493-1541) Fire Circle alchemy is a ritual composition conducted with a fluidity copious enough to embrace, encourage, and inspirit spontaneous expression. As such it is also an unbounded and eternal experiment, one in which mutual creation is delivered from the celebration and discovery of each other. What emerges from this venture is a ceremonial union of opposites, a mélange of formal structure, artful improvisation, and inspired spiritual offerings. Although the lineage of the alchemical Fire Circle can be traced back to Pagan gatherings, it has evolved beyond the conventions of its origin, for it welcomes all modes of life-affirming spirituality. In order to maximize the elegant flow of the experiment, there are a number of fundamental details that must be addressed, starting with set-up of the ritual container and gathering of materials. This work is comprised of: gathering wood for the fire, assembling and positioning benches for the musicians, ensconcing tiki torches for illumination, supplying water bottles to facilitate hydration, preparing a food area for sustenance, constructing a welcome portal or gate to encourage conscious entry to the vessel, and organizing a rattle altar (upon which shakers and other small percussion instruments are made available to all celebrants for use for the duration of the rite). In addition, there are often symbols or circles marked out in flour or chalk on the ground, as part of the preparation for the ceremony. The ceremony begins with connection, elicted by the physical linking of hands, the emotional meeting of eyes, the mental contact of naming both ourselves and our places of origin, and, periodically, by the spiritual correspondence of invocation through expression of ritual intentions. This initial interlacing of essence is attentively followed by a Circle casting. Our magic Circle, or alchemical vessel, is formulated from a conglomeration of hands, hearts, minds, and spirits, all interwoven through music, chant, spoken word, and movement. There is no pre-scribed liturgy or pre-rehearsed form. Every alchemical Fire Circle is unique and inimitable. Because the process unfolds extemporaneously, it is never exactly the same, although there are some similarities in the pattern. For instance, a fire-lighting ceremony of some nature invariably occurs, along with an opening ritual that consistently stimulates and fuels a thematically appropriate chant. Another chant will, in all probability, ripen into a related but divergent theme. And on and on the Circle turns, all the way to illumination. When we attend to what is actually happening in the Circle, finding our inspiration and improvisational directions from each other while staying mindfully engaged in the process, we deepen the discovery of ourselves, our relationships, and our community. Alchemical Fire Circle rituals include: 1) A Beginning: This is a time when the entire group of celebrants unites in a collaborative effort to ensure the mindful creation of the ritual/alchemical container in which the ensuing magical Work will soon transpire. Most often, this is a task with multiple layers, accomplished in part by asking community members to create “prayer flags,” strips of fabric which they have the opportunity to adorn with their intentions or invocations in whichever way they find most appropriate (e.g. language, symbols, etc.). These prayer flags are then tied onto a cord that has been affixed to long torches secured to stakes, encircling the ritual area and thereby forming the boundary of the vessel. 2) A Middle: This period is defined by an amalgam of multi-faceted symbiotic relationships, in the midst of which there is a collective awareness of the planetary influences on the actions and reactions of the people in the Circle—a veritable embodiment of
Book II: Rites & Rituals 147 the alchemical metals in solution. These interactions are based around the offerings of drum, dance, voice, spontaneous ritual, and service. 3) An Ending: As the solar disk begins to rise, there is a concomitant rising of the energetic vibration of the group, followed by an interlude of stillness and an intimate pause for reflection, both internal and external, juxtaposed with reverence. It is in this space of conscious group connection that the sun’s ascendance is celebrated, a cosmological mirroring of the “gold” that has been created during the ritual process, and a symbolic ending of the ceremony. Walking the Fire By Francesca Gentille (There are folks going around in the magickal community creating special “fire-walking ceremonies.” After a big log fire has burned down to coals, a thick bed of red-hot, glowing coals is raked out into a long, wide carpet, and people who have been properly prepared walk the length of this flaming pit in their bare feet. This is truly an amazing experience! But NEVER try this on your own, without qualified guidance, preparation, and supervision!) I have always loved fire, and I came to the Fire that night, as I had so many times before, in awe, in wonder, in friendship. Looking at the leaping multi-colored flames I could feel the answering heat in my own body. I felt myself to be the flame of truth that purifies, the light of insight that illuminates, the dance of ideas and inspiration that ignites new creations, the deep burn of passion (whether for a person, a project, or life itself) that always destroys and transforms who I think I am. Our evening firewalk had been skillfully prepared with a presentation and exercises on learning how to know and focus our intentions. Our inner rhythms had been attuned with drumming and with chanting. Only after the hot cedar bonfire had been combed into coals were we to be allowed to cross its six-foot expanse. We learned that night that cultures around the world have worshipped the Fire, leaped the Fire, and walked the Fire as a delving into the truth, power, and focus of their spirits. As a priestess I had spent years facing my deepest truths, sharing my insights, and creating from my passions. And now, as I faced the Fire, I felt myself to be the Fire; I knew I would be safe. As I watched person after person come to the edge of the Fire and walk, stroll, or dance across, I noticed I did not move forward. I wondered why my body and spirit were waiting to cross the Fire. I knew my intention—to commit my life to the Fire—to truth, to transformation, to being a catalyst and a healer. I felt at peace, yet inexplicably I did not step forward. Then a woman came and stood next to me. She appeared shy and hesitant. I turned to her and smiled. She said, “I am frightened, I wish I had someone to walk across the Fire with me.” I held out my hand. That night I learned that the flame of my spirit is sparked, is moved, by compassion. I always learn something at the Fire, if I will listen. We walked to the edge of the flickering wind-whipped coals and paused, gathering our focus and words. As our naked feet purposefully strode the five paces across the coals, we each spoke our sacred intent to the Fire, to one another, and to the surrounding circle of witnesses. I said, “I dedicate myself to the Fire.” The heat was intense, and periodically it felt as if it was nipping (or “kissing,” as it is called amongst firewalkers) my soles. As we walked off our flaming carpet we joyfully embraced and breathed in that we had no burns, only the sweet rush of success. 168. Fire, Fire, Fire Fire, fire, fire Kindle my spirit higher In your flames, naught remains But fire, fire fire! —Cynthia R. Crossen 169. Rise With the Fire O we can rise with the fires of freedom! Truth is the fire that will burn our chains! And we will stop the fires of destruction! Healing is the fire running through our veins! —Starhawk
