128 Creating Circles & Ceremonies 3. Rituals for Protection & Healing I. Protection Spells & Rituals By Oberon Zell-Ravenheart When doing defensive spells against psychic attacks, set them to send any negative energy right back to where it came from. The best kinds of protection and defense magick are mirrored wards and shields. These involve throwing up a protective field around yourself and your space, which will repel unwanted energies. The perfect metaphor is the energy fields/shields used to protect the Starship Enterprise from phaser fire and photon torpedoes. “Harden” the outer shell of your auric field into a psychic shield. Stand strong, feet apart, and close your eyes. Center yourself with a grounding (see pages 36-39). Then, with palms flattened and fingers spread wide, move your hands up, down, and all around your body at arm’s length, while visualizing that you are shaping and pressing against the inside of a Teflon-coated shell all around yourself. Now open your eyes and expand that shield around your entire room, apartment, or house, strengthening it into an impenetrable shell that is reflectively mirrored on the outside. Use visualization as well as an actual hand-held round mirror as you circle around each room, holding your hands up as if against an invisible wall. That’s a shield. Tape small mirrors to the insides of your windows, reflecting side out. If you can’t use mirrors, make balls of aluminum foil and leave them on your window sills. A small box, completely lined with aluminum foil (shiny side in), with your picture and a lock of your hair in the box, makes for an inexpensive mirror-box. Cover the outside with foil as well, shiny side out. In addition, hang fresh garlic cloves around your home, and place cut halves of onions on the windowsills. When they no longer make your eyes water, slice off another section to keep the surface fresh. A small saucer of vinegar (which can hold an onion half) can be placed somewhere out of sight and still absorb negativity, replacing it as often as necessary. NOTE: Don’t just throw spell items that are done into the trash! Take your garlic to a crossroads after it’s done its work (Hekate will just love it!). Finally, drive a few large iron nails into the ground in front of each doorway into your house, and, if you can get one, hang a horseshoe or hex sign over the door. Witch Bottle “Witch bottles” were very popular in England in the 17th–8th centuries to create protective fields around houses and everything within them. Think of it as a psychic field generator throwing up a repulsion barrier that no enemies may cross. To make one, take a large glass jar with a screw-on lid, and fill it with sharp objects: pins, nails, tacks, broken glass (especially shards of a broken mirror!), thorns, urine, salt, etc. Add leaves of rosemary, basil, and bay. Screw the lid tight, and seal it with melted wax from a black candle, saying: Witches’ Bottle, herbs and charms, Banish evil, ward off harm. Protect me from all enemies As my will, so mote it be! (—Gerina Dunwich) Hide the bottle in the back of the cupboard under the kitchen sink, or bury it at the farthest corner of your property when the moon is waning. A Witch bottle protects its owner from harm, and makes a great housewarming gift!
Book II: Rites & Rituals 129 Mirror Spell Ritual Here is a classic protective mirror spell that Morning Glory and I have been using, with appropriate variations, for decades. We have found it to be quite effective. I recommend creating your protective Circle not with a blade, but with a hand-held round mirror. One with a handle would be ideal for this. Use lipstick or a dry-erase marker to draw a protective pentagram (one point up) upon the face of the mirror. You can capture moonlight in your mirror at night if you do the spell as soon as the moon has risen. If you cannot see the moon from any of your windows, take the mirror outside and catch moonlight reflected in it to charge it. Do this by holding the mirror in such a way that you can see the moon in it, and chant: Silv’ry Moon, reflected light, Flow into my mirror bright. In the darkness of the night, Protection grant by magick’s might. Face the mirror outward and walk around a Circle to encompass your space, as you visualize a reflective circle forming around that space. It’s best if you can walk around the outside of your entire building, but if you only want to protect your own apartment, walk around the inside of each room, facing the mirror towards the outside walls. With palms flattened and fingers spread wide, move your hands up, down, and all around your body at arm’s length, while visualizing that you are shaping and pressing against the inside of a “Teflon-coated” shell all around your space. Expand the reflective Circle upwards and downwards in your visualization until it becomes a mirrored band, and finally a sphere or bubble, completely surrounding your entire apartment and strengthening it into an impenetrable shell, reflecting and deflecting all negative energy back to its source. As you create your protective Circle, chant: I cast the Circle round about, A world within, a world without. Let all within the aerie wheel Bear witness to the mystic seal. Let all without be turned about And hostile forces turned to rout. After you have created your mirrored bubble of protection, you should purge the interior of this space of all negativity. Make up a bowl of salt water (best is sea salt, available at any grocery store), and use a sprig of sage, basil, bay leaves, or cedar (whichever is easiest for you to obtain) to sprinkle the salt water around the edges and corners of your rooms. As you do this, chant: Water and salt, where you are cast, No spell or adverse purpose last That is not in accord with me. As I do will, so mote it be! And finally, draw pentagrams on small round mirrors or circles of aluminum foil and tape them to the insides of your windows, reflecting side out. Conclude your rite with: The Circle’s cast; the bound’ries sealed. All ills at last may now be healed. By all the might of Moon and Sea, As I do will, so mote it be!
