(a) Examples with a participial complement:<br />

uyaziqhenya ngomsebenzi wakhe njengoba eyi-Principal<br />

Telecommunications Operator … ‘he is proud of his work, since<br />

he is Principal Telecommunications Operator …’<br />

Njengoba kungenamigwaqo neziphawu zomgwaqo<br />

esibhakabhakeni, … ‘Since there are no roads or road signs in the<br />

sky, …’<br />

Njengoba iningi labantu abahlala kulezozindawo eziyingozi<br />

lingakunaki ukusebenzisa imithi yokuzivikela kulesifo, … ‘Since<br />

the majority of people who live in high risk areas take no notice<br />

about using preventatives against this disease, …’<br />

njengoba esezidayisela izinto azenzele zona ngezandla zakhe<br />

‘since she is already selling her own handicaft’<br />

(b) Examples which, without tonal data, could be either principal or<br />

participial:<br />

ukukhishwa kwezisu kwanda kakhulu njengoba sibhekene<br />

nesimo sokuntenga komnotho ‘abortions are on the increase since<br />

we are facing volatility in the economy’<br />

Njengoba kukhona obhekene nakho ngalesisikhathi, … ‘Seeing<br />

2.3.6.1. non-influencing ‘that’<br />

(i.e. can be followed by the indicative, subjunctive, or potential<br />

depending on context: (after verbs of knowing, believing, thinking,<br />

feeling, seeing, hearing, saying, asking, promising, finding …). The<br />

situation in <strong>Zulu</strong> here is similar to what holds in English):<br />

indicative (in a statement of fact or belief):<br />

Ngicabanga ukuthi uyazama ‘I think that (s)he is trying’<br />

subjunctive (in a statement of obligation, necessity, etc.):<br />

Ngicabanga ukuthi azame ‘I think that (s)he should try’<br />
