(c) The following are examples of ukuba in locative adverbs:<br />

Ukubakhona kukaMongameli ‘The presence (lit. the being there)<br />

of the president’<br />

zama ukuba sendlini ‘try to be indoors (lit. to be in the house)’<br />

2.3.1.2. ukuba as a conjunction<br />

As a conjunction, ukuba may be followed by various moods or<br />

aspects depending on the particular significance and context. In<br />

several contexts, the conjunctions ukuba and ukuthi may be used<br />

interchangeably. Note that ukube occurs as a dialectal variant to<br />

ukuba when it is used as a conjunction.<br />

(a) + subjunc: “so that, in order that, that, to”<br />

(in clauses of purpose or desire; often, though not necessarily, after<br />

verbs of desire, intention, instructing, requesting, ordering,<br />

preventing, causing …; or after nouns indicating purpose, intention,<br />

decision, etc. The conjunction ukuthi can replace ukuba in these<br />

environments.):<br />

babengafuni ukuba ashade noSebata ‘they did not want her to<br />

marry Sebata (lit. did not want that she should marry)’<br />

ngenhloso yokuba ngiyogeza izithombe ‘with the aim that I should<br />

go and have developed photos’ [Note that ngiyogeza is in the<br />

subjunctive. It does not end in -e because this suffix is not found in<br />

andative constructions.]<br />

wama kulendawo ngenhloso yokuba ayothenga uhlobo<br />

lwensipho ‘he stopped at this place with the intention of going and<br />

buying a kind of soap’<br />

isinqumo ukuba aphumele obala atshele amalunga ‘the decision<br />

that they should come out into the open and tell their members’<br />

[Note that there are two verbs in the subjunctive here]<br />

Ngenxa yokuthi abafundi abanawo umkhandlu obamele bonke<br />

bebengathandi ukuba badalulwe amagama abo ‘Due to the fact<br />

that the pupils do not have a representative body, they did not want<br />
