On the Road Again
Third-Generation Carpool Makes the Drive to UA
In the early 1980s, Maryann Lynch Byrne ’82 and Karen Fitzgerald Healy ’83 drove to
Ursuline Academy together from Canton. Today they are carpooling from Canton yet
again, this time driving their daughters, Ciara Byrne ’14 and Sydnie Healy ’16, to Ursuline
each day.
Even the grandmothers—whose friendship initiated the original carpool—are still involved
in the driving.
“It was a warm, funny reaction, déjà vu all over again,” Tara Lynch, Maryann’s mother, said
when asked about her granddaughter’s carpool. “I have many happy memories of the time
spent in the carpools and parent activities at Ursuline Academy.”
Through the years, we have had many “sister acts” and “mother-daughter duos” who have
attended Ursuline, but this three-generation carpool is the first of its kind on record at UA.
“I think Ciara and Sydnie think it’s cool, even if they are subjected to our reminiscing
sometimes,” Maryann said.
Carole Fitzgerald and Tara Lynch were friends and neighbors when they began carpooling
to Ursuline Academy with their daughters, Karen and Maryann. Years later, when Karen
and Maryann had daughters of their own, they used to joke about being in another UA
carpool together.
But their joke became a reality last year when Sydnie enrolled in the seventh grade and
joined Ciara at Ursuline. “It is nice for Sydnie that she has an upperclassman for a friend,”
Karen said. “It helped her feel more comfortable.”
The carpool not only created a special bond between Ciara and Sydnie, but also between
the mothers and daughters. “I think it’s great to go to the same school as my mom,” Sydnie
said. “My mom knows so much about the school, so when I talk about my experiences she
understands what I’m talking about.”
On the road again, three generations of carpoolers. Pictured left to right:
Tara Lynch and Maryann Lynch Byrne ’82
Though both Karen and Maryann share many aspects of their Ursuline experiences with
their daughters, some things have changed since their days at UA. “Historically, the Ursuline
Order has kept its traditions while adjusting to changing times, and that appears to be
continuing,” Maryann said. “There are many improvements, such as the new science wing.”
Some of the other improvements include renovations and updates in the gym, locker room
and library, as well as the addition of the Bear Cave Wellness Center.
The physical space at Ursuline may have changed over the years, but for these two families,
the value and benefits of an Ursuline education remain.
“I am so happy and proud to send Sydnie to Ursuline,” Karen said. “It means that she is
getting a wonderful education and learning to be a strong, independent young lady. I know
that when she graduates she will be well prepared for anything she encounters.”
Mission
Ursuline Academy is an independent Catholic school for young women that provides
a college preparatory education rooted in the traditions and values of St. Angela Merici:
★ Excellence in education
★ Respect for the uniqueness of the individual
★ Development of the whole person
★ Community and family spirit
★ Cultivation of leadership qualities
★ Willingness to serve others, as embodied in its motto, Serviam!
St. Angela Merici, founder of the Order of St. Ursula, sought to educate the whole person.
Her goal was to inspire young women to grow in faith, explore their academic potential,
lead with confidence and help those in need. Today, this holistic approach to academics is
thriving at Ursuline Academy where young women are appreciated for their unique talents.
From the President
Dear Friends of Ursuline,
How quickly fly the days! Each year, we begin a new school calendar with the expectation that there is time to get so much done.
Yet, in barely the blink of an eye, we watch the procession of our seniors as they gracefully descend the convent steps, leaving the
confines of Lowder Street to emerge into their future. Before we know it, September arrives and we begin the cycle again.
We celebrate in this report the conclusion of another successful year at Ursuline Academy! Another class of impressive and
inspiring young women now walk on college and university campuses across the country. I know they will brighten, strengthen
and inspire whatever institution they have chosen for the next phase of their education. They have been well prepared by their
loving parents and their dedicated teachers. They take with them a suitcase of knowledge and a strong foundation of faith that will
serve them well as they meet the challenges of life head on. I am confident that they will continue to live our motto, Serviam, and
strive to make the world a better place for all of us.
The Annual Report provides us with the opportunity to inventory the precious values that define this academic community:
respect for the individual, development of the whole person, excellence in education and a willingness to serve others. Each year
finds the Ursuline Sisters and Ursuline Academy working as effectively as ever toward the same mission envisioned by St. Angela
five hundred years ago: educational opportunity for young women.
The Annual Report lists the many friends of Ursuline Academy. Each of you is a vital part of this community and we count on
your interest and support. I am blessed to have you walking with me as we journey together to strengthen and expand the mission
of Ursuline Academy.
May God bless you always.
Gratefully,
Rosann M. Whiting
A New Set of Wheels for UA
Ursuline Academy is moving forward into the future with a brand-new set of
wheels. The next time you drive down Lowder Street, keep an eye out for the white
and green bus in the UA parking lot.
The bus was purchased thanks to generous contributions from the Class of 2011
Senior Parents. The fundraising goal for the project was $35,000, but the final tally
was over $44,000. Not only did the families surpass their financial target, but the
71% participation rate was the highest ever for a Senior Parent Gift!
Many thanks to all who donated! Now Ursuline girls will be riding in style to their
athletic events and field trips. The bus has already gotten plenty of use in the new
school year, taking the girls to games in nearby towns and on field trips to the
Museum of Science and Draper Lab in Cambridge.
Special thanks to Daniel and Judy Shea and Robert and Maryanne Donald, the Cochairs
of the Senior Parent Gift Committee, as well as to the dedicated members
of the Senior Parent Gift Committee: Diana Bradley, Fran Coughlin, Peter Dolan,
Colette Fearnley, Joanne Hirschfeld, Robin McFadden, Nancy Nelson, Teresa
Prego, Lorraine Saad, Lillian Sitcawich and Renee Slason.
Extreme Makeover: Ursuline Edition
UA Receives Generous $60,000 Grant from
Yawkey Foundation for Gym Makeover
Thanks to a generous $60,000 grant from the Yawkey
Foundation, Ursuline Academy’s largest gathering
space received a major makeover in 2011.
Since the school was built in 1957, this space has been a
“triple threat,” serving as gym, chapel and auditorium.
Throughout the course of a week at Ursuline Academy,
the space goes through many transformations. It
is utilized as a chapel for liturgies, a classroom for
physical education classes, a gathering space for college
fairs and assemblies and a rehearsal and performance
venue for our singing groups, Drama Club and Speech
Team. It also serves as the home court for the UA
Bears basketball and volleyball teams. It was time to
refurbish this multi-purpose space so that our students
can have a safe and updated place where they can play,
pray and perform.
The Yawkey Foundation grant enabled us to completely
renovate the space with new floors, new and improved
lighting and a fresh coat of paint on the walls and ceiling.
We also purchased new chairs, which provide a much more
comfortable viewing experience for students, faculty, parents
and guests at school events. New window blinds and stage risers
put the finishing touches on the renovation of the space as a
performance venue.
St. Angela Merici, the founder of the Order of St. Ursula,
advised her Sisters to “adapt to the needs of changing times,”
to provide the best possible education for young women. Since
the founding of Ursuline Academy in 1946, the Ursuline Sisters
and each member of our community have been striving to live
up to St. Angela’s directive.
Thank you to the Yawkey Foundation for helping us adapt to
changing times and better serve our students with this new and
improved space!
New floor, new and improved lighting, new chairs, and a bright
coat of paint on ceilings and walls have transformed the UA gym.
The Yawkey Foundation
The Yawkey Foundation is dedicated to continuing the
philanthropic legacy of Tom and Jean Yawkey, former owners
of the Boston Red Sox. The Yawkey Foundation works to
make significant and positive impacts on the quality of life of
children, families and the underserved in the areas which the
Yawkeys called home: New England and Georgetown County,
South Carolina.
Since 2002, the Trustees of the Yawkey Foundation have
awarded over $270 million to organizations that encourage
educational opportunities, improve health care, enhance
human service programs, provide youth and amateur athletic
opportunities, celebrate arts and cultural endeavors and
value conservation efforts.
50 Years of Being Ursuline Girls
Special Newsletter Helps the Class of 1961
Catch Up at Their 50th Reunion
With 50 years’ worth of adventures, challenges and memories to share, the Ursuline
Academy Class of 1961 knew there would be no shortage of conversation at their 50th
Reunion in May 2011.
In fact, there was so much to catch up on that they put together a 32-page publication, the
Class of 1961 50th Reunion Newsletter.
The idea for the newsletter was born when Maria Marchand Coffey ’61 started to correspond
with classmates to encourage them to attend the 50th reunion. “Maria wanted to make
some type of reunion memory book…so I volunteered to create a newsletter that showcased
the milestones of five decades of living along with our Ursuline experiences,” said Dr.
Constance Y. Fitzpatrick ’61, who edited and published the newsletter.
Dr. Fitzpatrick had studied visual art for 12 years, and also has extensive marketing
communications experience, so she was the perfect person for the job. She has worked
on brochures, newsletters, logos and other similar writing projects for her own health
technology company and other organizations.
But even with all that experience, creating this newsletter was still no small undertaking.
Dr. Fitzpatrick spent 250 hours over four months working on the publication, with the
help of Coffey and fellow classmate Denise Burke Marchand. “Most of my time was spent
communicating with everyone to get text and photos from classmates for various sections
of the newsletter and to get everyone to approve their edited copy,” she said. “And then to
slip the info into the publication in a way that flowed and held interest, while adding art
and other areas of punch.”
The newsletter—the first of its kind at an Ursuline Academy reunion—contained memories
and photos of their years at Ursuline, as well as biographies and photos detailing their lives
in the 50 years since they graduated. More than a third of the class became professional
writers, journalists, or English teachers, and others explored avenues in the science and
business fields.
The most talked-about story was an article titled “The Place We Remember Fondly: 12
Arlington Street–The John Bates House.” Dr. Fitzpatrick spent hours meticulously
researching the history and evolution of the building that was Ursuline Academy’s home
before the school moved to its current location on Lowder Street in Dedham. “The story I
heard most about was…the history of 12 Arlington Street in Boston, where many of us in
our class started our Ursuline learning prior to the move to Dedham,” Dr. Fitzpatrick said.
“That building’s architecture was wonderful and so is its history. Those of us who went to
The Class of 1961 enjoying their reunion
on the terrace of the Ursuline Convent
school there feel the place was magical.” Today, 12 Arlington Street has been converted into
luxury condominiums and is known as “One Commonwealth.”
Despite the passage of time and changes to their school, the bond among these classmates is
still strong. Dr. Fitzpatrick surmised that the creation of the newsletter led to a lot of buzz
that increased attendance at the reunion.
“Classmates’ email traffic that ensued about the event and each other made for an unexpected
camaraderie…as if it were yesteryear,” she said. “Regardless of the years that have passed, the
bond we have as a class is big.”
Alumnae Athletes Come Back to UA to Coach
For many Ursuline athletes the UA gym, the field and tennis courts are the site of their
fondest memories; memories from the days when they would pull on a green Ursuline jersey
after school and represent the Bears with their teammates.
Several of these athletes are now back at Ursuline, making new memories on the other side
of the bench as coaches.
They are still proudly wearing the UA green, but in a new capacity. Five of the coaches in
Ursuline’s athletic program are graduates of the Academy:
Molly Wheeler ’00, Jr. High Volleyball
Caitlin Murphy ’03, JV Basketball, Varsity Basketball Assistant
Erin O’Connor ’03, Dance
Courtney McCabe ’04, JV Softball and Varsity Basketball Assistant
Liz Montgomery ’05, Jr. High Softball
Ursuline Athletic Director Mike O’Connor P’03, ’08 sees an advantage to hiring alumnae
as coaches for the UA teams, and not solely because each of these women has achieved
success in the sport they coach. “These young women have been a part of the Ursuline
experience, so they know both the academic and athletic challenges our students face,” he
said. “In addition to being great coaches, they are wonderful role models.”
Courtney McCabe ’04 was working as a substitute teacher at Ursuline last year when the
Jr. High Softball coach position opened up and she jumped at the opportunity. She guided
the team to a 10-1 record in the spring of 2011, and agrees that being a former UA studentathlete
helps in her coaching. Courtney played both softball and basketball while at UA.
“I think that there are some things about being at Ursuline that you just can’t understand
Erin O’Connor ’03, Molly Wheeler ’00, Liz Montgomery ’05,
Courtney McCabe ’04, and Caitlin Murphy ’03
unless you have been here and been a part of it,” she said. “The girls know I have and I think
they like that and can appreciate it.”
“I hope the girls can relate to me as a female, alumna and student-athlete,” added Caitlin
Murphy ’03, the current JV Basketball coach and Varsity Basketball Assistant.
She was a 1,000-point scorer in basketball while at Ursuline, and then went on to play both
basketball and softball at Bates College in Maine. “Even though it’s been nearly ten years
[since graduation], I feel like I was just here,” Caitlin said. “There have been a few changes
to the gym and the school, but it still feels like home to me.”
Other alumnae are giving back to the UA athletics program outside of coaching. Caitlin
Burchill ’08, who plays volleyball at Colby College in Maine, returned to Ursuline to help
with volleyball tryouts from 2008-2010. She lists coaching volleyball among her aspirations,
and said she would love to come back and coach at UA someday.
“Ursuline and the volleyball team were such important parts of my life that it only made
sense for me to give back to a place that gave me so much,” she said.
A Legacy of Love
Shared with Ursuline
Sisters Dr. Raymonda Haviland Hickey ’58 and
Dr. Mary Cassandra Hickey ’54 shared a love of
their alma mater and the legacy of their parents’
unwavering religious faith. After Cassandra’s
passing, Raymonda was inspired to share this
legacy of love and faith with Ursuline
Academy.
In December of 2010, Raymonda and
her brother, Frank, donated a beautiful
chalice to Ursuline Academy in memory
of their sister. She commissioned the
chalice made with the wedding rings
worn by both of her beloved parents.
The chalice is a beautiful memorial to
her sister, who so cherished the rings
that are now a part of it.
“After my mom died, Cassie wore the rings on her right hand for twenty
years,” Raymonda wrote in a letter to Academy President Rosann Whiting.
“My mom had their wedding rings made from her mother and dad’s wedding
rings (they died in the famous flu epidemic of 1917),” she wrote. “There is
much history and love attached to these rings.”
The diamond in the cross on the chalice came from her mother’s engagement
ring, and both wedding bands are part of the chalice. The phrase “Ad
Majorem Dei Gloriam”—For the Greater Glory of God—is inscribed on
the bottom of the chalice. This Latin phrase is the motto of the Jesuit order,
but was also the mantra for the Hickey parents during their forty years of
marriage, Raymonda said.
“They taught us to love and trust God at all times and in all circumstances,”
she said. “This was their legacy to their children.”
And with this chalice, it is now the Hickey family’s legacy to the Ursuline
Academy community.
Retreat Leaders
For more than twenty years, Ursuline Academy Campus Minister Mrs. Marge Costa has been working
with a devoted team of alumnae retreat leaders to plan both the Junior and Senior Retreats. The group
coordinates every aspect of these retreats, from the prayers and readings used to the meals served
throughout the weekend. We are grateful to each of these volunteers for their dedication to Campus
Ministry at Ursuline Academy. Each prayer, reflection or personal experience that they have shared
with Ursuline girls over the years truly makes a difference.
Alumnae Profile: Eve Kelley
This Dedicated Alumna Has Shared Her
Time and Talent at UA Retreats for Over 20 Years
When she was in the ninth grade at Ursuline, Eve Kelley ’86 recalls constantly asking
her religion teacher, Mrs. Costa, when she could go away on a weekend retreat like the
upperclassmen. She spent years eagerly anticipating the trips for Junior and Senior Retreat,
but little did she know that she would still be marking those events on her calendar long
after her graduation from Ursuline. Eve has been a volunteer on Mrs. Costa’s alumnae
retreat leader team for over 20 years.
Retreats and campus ministry were some of the most memorable parts of Eve’s Ursuline
experience. When she was a senior, Eve was a Peer Minister and got her first taste of retreat
planning as she worked to prepare liturgies, prayer services and retreats with her classmates.
After graduating from Ursuline she went on to Babson College in Wellesley, but it was not
long before Eve was back home at Ursuline. Mrs. Marge Costa, Eve’s 9th grade religion
teacher and Ursuline Academy’s Campus Minister, reached out to ask her to help with
retreats while she was still at Babson. “I was still in college when she invited me back for the
first time,” Eve said. “So it was probably 1989.”
Mrs. Costa has been working with a dedicated team of alumnae volunteers at the Ursuline
retreats for decades. “I think there’s an amazing group of women who give so much of
themselves in time and effort, in all the years that the retreat program has been going on,”
Eve said. As one of the veterans of this group, she handles many of the behind-the-scenes
details of retreat weekends.
“I do all sorts of things, the book covers, nametags, prayer cards, things like that,” she said.
“The last couple of retreats I’ve also been working in the kitchen…I’ve been trying to perfect
my spaghetti and meatball technique and so far no one has complained about the food…
yet!”
Mrs. Costa, Eve and the rest of the retreat team work to tailor each retreat experience to
the individual class, with interactive activities and reflections. “The team gets together a few
weeks before the retreat and plans the theme and the message,” said Eve. “We learn about
the girls in the class from the faculty so that we can make sure we are doing something that
they connect with.”
One of her favorite retreat themes to share with the girls is about foundation. “What you
accomplish in life is based on what you are able to learn and accomplish before you get
there, and for me that started in high school,” she said. “If you’re built on a pile of sand
you aren’t going to get far, but if you’re built on a pile of rocks you can keep climbing to do
whatever you want.” For Eve, Ursuline is the pile of rocks that enabled her to go out into the
Eve Kelley ’86 and Marge Costa get ready for their next retreat.
world as a strong and confident young woman. After graduating from Babson, she earned
her MBA at Suffolk University and has spent the past 17 years working at the TD Garden,
currently as the Premium Club Box Office Manager, the perfect job for this lifelong fan of
the Boston Bruins.
Eve believes that her alumna perspective is what helps her and the other retreat leaders
minister to the students. “I think there is a sense of trust when you are talking to someone
who is an Ursuline alum, because it’s like a family,” she said. “You’re talking to people with
a similar high school background and you see what they’ve become and accomplished…
Ursuline gives you a foundation that you might not realize when you are here.”
But the ministering goes both ways. The retreat weekends are a shared experience for all
involved, both students and volunteers. Many times, the weekends have been a muchneeded
opportunity for the volunteers to pause and step outside the busyness of day-to-day
life.
“It’s pretty typical of us to show up on Friday exhausted and thinking it’s not the right
weekend to be sequestered in a house with forty 16-year-olds, but we all leave our outside
world baggage at the door,” Eve said. “It’s a retreat for us, too, and we get reenergized
by meeting these girls and seeing the possibilities they have to offer. It’s very hopeful and
energizing, and we leave with a renewed sense of spirit.”
Eve has been helping with these retreats for so many years that many of her fellow volunteers
remember her as a leader at their retreats, back when they were students. And she wouldn’t
have it any other way.
“Ursuline, for me, is who I am,” she said. “I’ve always been able to come home to Ursuline.”
Brescia Ball 2010
‘Unmask Their Potential!’
On November 20, 2010, the Ursuline Academy community came
together at the Brescia Ball to celebrate the mission and legacy of St.
Angela Merici, the founder of the Order of St. Ursula. We came together
in support of Ursuline Academy students, to “Unmask their Potential”
both here at Ursuline and beyond.
Thanks to your generous support, the 2010 Brescia Ball raised $83,000.
Each dollar raised that night is used to unmask the potential of every
Ursuline Academy student. In 2010, the money raised was used
to renovate and update the Ursuline Academy library. The library
technology is completely up-to-date, with eight brand-new computers,
four Macs and four PCs, and a Smartboard©. There are new tables and
chairs throughout the room, and separate study spaces for small group
work. We were also able to update and refresh the library’s literature
collection, providing the students with the resources they need for
research and discovery.
While joining together to “Unmask their
Potential,” we also paused to recognize
and honor those members of the Ursuline
community who have already done so
much to support the Academy. Marguerite
Costa P ’79, ’86, GP ’12, John and Celia
Fisher P ’07 and Sister Nesta Beaudoin,
O.S.U. were honored for their love and
commitment to Ursuline Academy and to
the mission of St. Angela Merici.
The Ursuline Sisters, Board of Trustees,
Faculty/Staff and the students of Ursuline
Academy are grateful for your loyal and
generous support of the Academy. Thank
you for helping us to unmask the potential
of all our students!
Dedicated Faculty ‘Turn the Page’
Mrs. Carol Tomase, English Teacher, 1983-2011
by Barbara Lavalle, Director of Advancement
Mrs. Carol Tomase is a familiar face in the halls of Ursuline Academy. She arrived on
Ursuline’s doorstep when her daughter, Holly ’89, first came to the school. This meeting
marked the start of a beautiful friendship. During the 28 years she spent at Ursuline, Mrs.
Tomase was one of the first people to welcome the incoming seventh grade students each
fall. From the moment they set foot in Ursuline, Mrs. Tomase worked hard to ensure that
each of her students felt welcome and safe. She began each day with a prayer and invited
her students to share their prayerful intentions. “They start to share with one another and it
helps them learn to support and accept each other…it’s beautiful to watch this build as the
days and weeks go by…”
Music has long been a passion of Mrs. Tomase. In 1985, she started the Ursuline Glee Club
with just twelve girls. After just one year, the number of singers grew to over sixty students.
Today, the Ursuline Glee Club has become an integral part of the school, with as many as
130 students participating each year.
Mrs. Tomase refers to the Ursuline Sisters and her fellow faculty members as “part of my
family.” “Having the faculty, the Ursuline Sisters, students and their families in our lives
has come to mean everything to me.” For 28 years, Carol Tomase has inspired the many
young women who have graced her classroom or who raised their voices in song under
her direction. Ursuline Academy is deeply grateful to Mrs. Carol Tomase for her years of
service and dedication to the Ursuline education of generations of students who have been
fortunate to have her as a teacher, a mentor, and forever, a friend.
Mrs. Mary Anderson, Math Teacher, 1995-2011
by Patrice Howard ’04
Over the years, Mary Anderson asked her math students to follow one simple rule when
completing an assignment for her class: “show your work.”
She was not concerned if the answer was correct. She was not upset if the decimal point
was in the wrong place, or even if the denominators were not multiplied. Rather, Mrs.
Anderson was intent on seeing the simple steps each student took to arrive at the solution,
so that she could equip them with the knowledge they would need to succeed on the next
problem, and the next.
Mrs. Anderson entered the Math Department at Ursuline Academy in 1995, and from
day one “showed her work.” While Mrs. Anderson enjoyed teaching the basics, she also
recognized the importance of showing her students how to apply their math skills in
the real world. For many years, she asked them to follow the stock exchange, organize a
budget and formulate a workable plan for their futures.
Upon recognizing that one of her 9th grade classes felt unmotivated by the facts and
figures on the chalkboard, Mrs. Anderson incorporated some friendly competition into
her curriculum. If a student answered enough questions correctly and got her initials
to the last square on the chalkboard grid, that student was awarded a “chicken,” which
relates to one extra quiz point. And so the chicken game was born.
Mrs. Anderson truly made the most of her sixteen years at Ursuline Academy. She formed
meaningful friendships with her colleagues. She made new students feel at home during
their first days at UA. She dressed up during Spirit Week, and transformed her classroom
into a Country Store just in time for Mission Day. She passed advice along to parents,
and went out of her way to help her students reach their full potential.
If you take the amount of love Mrs. Anderson has for Ursuline, and multiply it by the
number of students, faculty and staff she has touched over the years, you would find that
there is actually an infinite amount of love for everybody’s favorite math teacher.
Down at the Farm
Ursuline Senior Lives Our Motto of Serviam at Nazareth Farm in West Virginia
A parish service trip to Nazareth Farm in West Virginia in the summer of 2010
was the beginning of an enduring service venture for Emily Sullivan ’12.
Nazareth Farm is a Catholic community in rural West Virginia that works to alleviate
substandard housing in Appalachia with home repair. Throughout the year, volunteers
from across the country come to the farm for a six-day service/retreat experience. After her
time spent at the farm repairing homes, bonding with fellow
volunteers and reflecting in prayer, Emily was hooked.
“I loved it and wanted to go back,” she said. “And I wanted
to get other people involved.” Emily knew the perfect people
to share this service experience with: her fellow students at
Ursuline Academy.
She spoke to the Ursuline community about her service
experience with her parish at Nazareth Farm on Mission Day
in October 2010. At the end of her speech, she challenged her
classmates to get involved: Ursuline Academy was sending a
group to Nazareth Farm for six days in July 2011 and needed
volunteers for the trip.
The six spots on the trip were open to members of the Class
of 2012, who were juniors at the time. “A lot more students
wanted to go than we could take, so we picked the names
out of a hat,” Emily said. Caroline DiNicola ’12, Gemma Forest ’12, Molly Keeley ’12,
Gabriella Santone ’12 and Tracey Sullivan ’12 made the trip to Nazareth Farm, along with
Emily Sullivan, UA Athletic Director Mike O’Connor and math teacher Caitlin Chipman.
The group piled into a van for the 11-hour drive to West Virginia, and the bonding began
immediately. “The girls who went on the trip,
we were all friendly before, but now we are a lot
closer,” said Emily.
Not only did the Ursuline girls bond with each
other, but they also got to know other volunteers
from around the country. The group from UA
worked with volunteers from Minnesota, Illinois
and New York. “You’re not with the group from
Ursuline the whole time,” Emily said. “They
separate you into six different work groups,
so you meet people from all around the
country, which is fun.”
But mixed in with the fun of meeting new friends was hard work. “We did chores and
kitchen duties to clean up after ourselves at the farm, and then went out to the community
each day,” said Caitlin Chipman, one of the chaperones. “We
helped with building a deck, insulating an attic, siding and
painting a house and reading and writing with a local school
summer reading program.”
Each day at Nazareth Farm begins and ends with prayer, so it
is both a service and retreat experience for the volunteers. At
the end of the week, there is a final reflection. “We all had a
chance to reflect on what the week meant to each of us,” AD
Mike O’Connor said. “What struck me as each of our girls
spoke was how sincerely impacted they were, each in their
own way.”
“I know when you do service it’s supposed to be you helping
them, but you also get a lot back from it, too,” Emily added.
Emily has plans to return to Nazareth Farm twice in 2012. She
will go back in May as part of her senior service, and a plan is
also in the works for her to return this summer. “The six of us who went last summer threw in
our own application to their lottery system, hoping to go back,” she said. “And we just found
out the other day that we got picked.”
It is not only Emily Sullivan’s relationship
with Nazareth Farm that will continue:
another group of UA students will travel to
West Virginia this summer to experience
their own week of prayer and service.
Looks like this could be the beginning
of another beautiful friendship between
an Ursuline girl and the community at
Nazareth Farm!
The Sisters of the Ursuline Order – We Remember
Excerpt from the Class of 1961 50th Reunion Newsletter. The Class of 1961 fondly remembers the Ursuline Sisters who taught them during their years at Ursuline Academy.
I remember most of all Mother Agnes, Mother Celine, Mother Cecilia, Mother Robert and
Sister Caroline (when still a novice). Although all the nuns mattered to us, perhaps the two
sisters at Ursuline who had the most impact on my life and learning were Mother Agnes
and Mother Celine.
Mother Agnes taught me for six years both at Arlington in Boston
and in Dedham, MA. We learned prepositions to “Yankee Doodle
Dandy;” I can list all of them today. We learned every state and
its capital and one major landmark for each state to other songs.
Drilling grammar into our grey matter, we diagramed sentences
until we were nearly blue in the face, while loading up with
chewing gum (Aspir-gum for headaches; allowed). She taught us
Latin, Geography, English Grammar, Literature and Composition,
and even the proper way to blow the nose to protect the ears.
To my thinking, Mother Agnes had a huge impact on all of us for
many reasons. As each of us in the class of 1961 has exchanged
messages and bios 50 years later; we can clearly see the sound writers
she created. More than a third of our class became professional
writers, journalists or English teachers. She was a driving force in
the molding of us into diligent and persevering women. Mother
Agnes was simply outstanding!
Mother Celine was promoted to Principal while we were still at
Arlington Street. Nevertheless, while having trouble with geometry
one year, she met with me a couple days each week during one
summer to teach me privately for a couple hours each session. We
played pool on paper to understand geometry concepts. I recall
her as being stern in presentation, introspective, sharp as a tack,
stretched to the max and giving that entire she could of herself to
enable the success of her learners. Her name was really Nora.
44
Mother Cecilia was a bubbly pint-sized nun full of enthusiasm and music who instructed me
in piano, among other topics. She could play the William Tell Overture with her back turned
to the piano while her right hand played the left and visa versa. She made learning fun. I
remember her as a talented Mozart-like composer
and musician of magnificent proportions.
Mother Robert taught me math, biology,
chemistry and photography. She had a matter
of fact approach to everything with the magic
ingredient of underlying kindness. She shared
‘learning secrets’ with us. She provided exercises
based upon New York regents exams from years
past, so we might increase our scores when taking
the big tests that mattered to our futures.
I remember Mother Caroline (her real name
was Ursula) when she was a novice. Then we
called her Sister Caroline. Although she was our
homeroom teacher, I remember her more for
other things. I recall she seemed to be everywhere
doing everything. At that time, she was the only
Sister who drove a car, which was always breaking
down. She took each Sister everywhere, including
doctor visits; ran all the errands, and even hauled
in the groceries. Mother Caroline was overworked
and perhaps underestimated.
What a group of strong, learned and diverse
women! No wonder we are too.
– Dr. Constance Young Fitzpatrick
Mother Michelle I remember her for her graceful walk from one side of the room to the
other stopping at the blackboard briefly to write a date she wanted us to remember…she
knew history and wanted us to love it as much as she did. She did her best to share her love
of history with us. – Mary Costello Pasciucco
Mother Augustine, who taught us algebra, was another of my favorite teachers. I remember
she was limping and when we asked why, she said she had twisted her ankle while playing
basketball. I always loved that. – Susan Hall Liang
Mother Michelle I would describe as “crisp;” she was “to the point” and very serious.
Without fanfare, she made us do what we had to do. Petite strong woman.
Mother Superior…I thought her name was Mother Mark. Anyway, I was at Mass one morning
in the Chapel on Arlington Street. We had a visiting priest who spoke with an accent. He came
to say Mass several times a month. When he turned to say “Dominus Vobiscum,” he would
invariably say it with much enthusiasm...it came out “Dominush Vobishcum” (as he sprayed
the congregation). I got the giggles. I couldn’t stop. The next thing I knew, I was being dragged
