Night in Natt i Medina When asked to be the editor of the June 2006 issue of the periodical Provins, I chose Ingrid Roth as cover artist. She lives in Aspåsnäset, a rural community situated outside the city of Östersund in the northern part of Sweden. Her studio is situated in the part of the city centre known as the old town. Climbing the stairs to her studio, the visitor is immediately struck by the immense joy inherent in her art. The motifs vary but there are certain recurrent themes and characteristics common to all of them – the colours are rich and cheerful, laundry is hung up to dry between the houses, and there are trees, churches, and the occasional dog. Choosing a painting for the cover is like having to choose between various delicious pastries: marzipan, berries, cream – yummie! In the end, I opt for ‘Night in the Medina’. When I ask what inspired her to paint this motif, she tells me of her great passion for bridge, which has taken her all the way to Tunisia. She tells me of bridge competitions taking place in a magnificent palace-like building next to a sultan’s parlour. Ingrid gives a vivid description of her Tunisia, showing me rich pictures of markets, spices, ‘holes in the wall’ (that are actually restaurants), and the hairdresser who gives his customers both tea and a massage, and who can work wonders with dental floss to remove facial hair. Ingrid clearly has a great love for Tunisia, a love which has influenced many of her paintings. In some of them the round dome of a mosque can be seen, and the washing line connecting the church and mosque symbolises peace between countries and religions – what a beautiful thought! We inhabitants of Jämtland are proud that she has chosen our province to be her home arena.
