e.s.t.
—a tight team
e.s.t., or the Esbjörn
Svensson Trio, is by far
Sweden’s most popular
jazz ensemble, and has
attained a tightness of
playing that is appreciated
by an ever-growing
audience around the
world. In January 2006,
for example, the trio will
be playing at the annual IAJE conference
in New York.
It is likely
that on this
auspicious
occasion e.s.t.
will be performing
DAN BERGLUND
Bass
pieces from its latest CD, Viaticum,
as they have done over
the past year of touring. Because
that’s just how pianist Esbjörn
Svensson, bassist Dan Berglund
and drummer Magnus
Öström look at things:
new CD, new tour.
“We rehearsed a great deal
before we recorded it, and
explored each tune to its
very depths,” says Svensson.
“It’s what we always do. It’s
essential for us to do this when
we slowly polish each tune to
give it its specific, unique feel.
Once we’ve got them perfect,
that’s when
we record. And
then it’s time
to tour.”
It’s a process
that is more
reminiscent
of how rock
groups work
than of how
one imagines
a jazz recording
is made
during an
afternoon of
improvisation.
Yet Svensson remains unperturbed.
For several years he’d had one foot in
the rock industry, and learnt one or
two things that he finds just as useful
to jazz.
“Making music accessible, for instance.
I don’t mean in the commercial,
speculative way. A lot of music is
made to be fun for the musicians to
play. But it has to be fun for the audience
to listen to too.”
In practical terms, this means a
carefully sculpted group sound in
which composition and improvisation
are fused into one seamless whole. It’s
“visible” music that unites direct
appeal with lingering substance;
music that’s just as suited to moodsetting
as to dance, or to contemplation,
allowing its wealth of detail to
unfold.
And it’s popular music too.A hundred
concerts a year would sound like
a dream to most; for e.s.t. it’s reality.
A handful of them take place in Sweden,
the rest out in the big wide world.
“Mostly in Europe, and then mainly
in Germany, but almost nothing is
written about it. On the other hand, a
big noise is made when we tour the
USA. But the truth of the matter is
that our tours often make a loss. Sure,
it’s cool to be on the cover of Down
Beat, but it’s no easier to make a name
for ourselves for that.”
But the USA has spin-off effects in
Europe.
“Journalists, arrangers, festivals ...
everyone responds to our having been
in the USA. So even if we don’t earn
a penny there, it makes things easier
for us back home in Europe.”
After having done his time in the
rock industry, Svensson knows where
to draw the line between the artistic
and the commercial. And he’s unusually
convinced that both are needed.
“When we’re exploring, pruning
and recording our tunes, that’s the
artistic process and you can’t speculate
about what will work with the
audience or look at what’s expected
of you. But once the music is ready,
it has to have appeal – for as many
people as possible. This is where a
whole new phase kicks in, and we
have to use all the commercial tricks
in the book.”
Like quality in everything: attractive
packaging, great photos, wellwritten
press releases, careful advertising,
updated website – possibly a
video.
“The main thing is that it has to be
easy for the listener to find the heart
of the music. And that doesn’t mean
that we compromise on the artistic
side. You can communicate to a broad
audience without fiddling with the
content.”
e.s.t was formed in 1993, and they
are keen to emphasise that they’re a
group, not a pianist plus accompaniment.
They’ve recorded nine CDs
over the years, Viaticum being, according
to Svensson, the group’s first
“political” one.
“The titles have always been important
for us. It’s usually Magnus who
thinks them up. Viaticum is Latin for
‘food for the journey’, and basically it
has a religious connotation associated
with Holy Communion. But we give
it a slightly new twist. We see life as a
journey and that everybody needs sustenance
for their soul. Viaticum is our
contribution to this.”
NEW PUBLICATION
Henneberg – the opera composer
The composer and music administrator
Albert Henneberg (1901-
1991) remains, despite his extensive
output, quite unknown. Among
other compositions his worklist contains
five operas. Never yet performed
on a Swedish stage, two of
them were well received in Germany
in 1937 and 1939. The author
of this book examines the reasons
why Henneberg, despite the German
success, never received opportunities
with the Swedish opera
stage. This valuable contribution to
the knowledge of a neglected Swe-
2
dish composer is written by Monica
Jungenfelt, who studies musicology
at Växjö University. A detailed list of
references, a complete worklist and
numerous music examples are included.
IAMIC annual meeting in New York
During the last week of September, The International
Association of Music Information
Centres, IAMIC, held its Annual Conference –
this time in New York.
IAMIC is currently in the middle of an interesting
development phase. Last year the bylaws
were changed so that we can now introduce
new types of member organisations. Next year
we will also employ a new system for the membership
fees. In order to facilitate the work of
the board a new structure of committees and
next year at the Stockholm Concert Hall. The
prize winners will, at that time, receive one million
Swedish kronor each from His Majesty
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
Valery Gergiev is awarded the prize “...for
the way his unique, electrifying musical skills
have deepened and renewed our relationship
with the grand tradition...” and for Led Zeppelin
the citation includes “... Their playful and
experimental music combined with highly
eclectic elements has two essential themes:
mysticism and primal energy.” Full citations
and biographies of the winners can be read at
www.polarmusicprize.com
The Polar Music Prize was set up in 1989 by
the late Stig Anderson. As the publisher, lyricist
and manager of ABBA, he played a key role in
the group’s enormous success. It was in 1992
that the prize could be awarded for the first
time.
sub-committees has been set up and staffed.
Further, the biggest project that IAMIC has
ever been involved in – the music portal, The
Music Navigator – is now being implemented.
The public section of the conference attracted
a very good gathering of people. One of
the sessions covered the making of film music,
while another tackled the use of new techniques
in music. Involving the public in this way
has the benefit of demonstrating to the world
outside that the Association is more than cap-
able of bringing up interesting discussions of a
broader interest than just those for IAMIC
members.
On one evening an IAMIC concert was organised.
All the MICs had been invited to send
in scores to the organisers last winter, from
which a selection was made by a committee
and this culminated in a concert with new
music from six countries. The compositions
were perfectly performed by the excellent
ensemble Firebird Ensemble from Boston.
