without much expenditure this scheme is running
well and irrigating 212 ha. It also fulfills the needs
of drinking water of the rural and new urban area
of Beed City. Given the unreliability of the Indian
monsoon, the seasonality of surface water sources
and the expenditure involved in the supply of piped
water, water-harvesting structures can play a useful
role in meeting the survival needs of the people
Water management
Find out how much water is available in your
village. An example and one table are given below.
Water requirement of village under
consideration
Area = 1000 haPopulation =1000 no. Animals =
600 no.
Water will be required for 1.Drinking ( people +
cattel) 2.Irrigation 3.Forest 4.Industries
1. Calculation of annual water requirement for
drinking purpose for peoples
=365 days x 100 liter per day requirement x
population 1000 =3,65,00,000 liters.
2. Calculation of water requirement for drinking
purpose for peoples
=365 days x 150 liter per day requirement x No. of
animals 600 =3,28,50,000 liters
Total= 365 00 000 + 328 00 000= 693 50 000 liters
=6.9 ha-m = 7 ha-m
3. Calculation of annual water requirement for
irrigation purpose
For one rotation 100 mm (0.1 mater) water
will be required. Generally 60% of the area is under
cultivation. Thus the cultivated land of our village
will be 60% of 1000 ha. i.e. 600 ha. Out of which
50% will be assumed under irrigation (300 ha).
450
Assuming one rotation in Kharif and four rotation
in Rabi the tatol water requirment for 300 ha will
be
= 300ha x 5 rotation x 0.1 meter =150 ha-m.
4. Calculation of annual water requirement for
Jungle purpos e
Plants in the jungle or Horticulture garden
require 100 liters of water per week. There are 52
weeks in a year. Let us not consider 2 rainy weeks.
Then assuming water requirement of 50 weeks only.
Let there are 200 no trees in a hectare, and the
plantation is on 100-hectare area. Then total number
of trees will be
= 200 no per ha x 100 ha area = 20 000 Nos.
Water requirement of 20 000 trees will be
= 20 000 no x 100 liters per week x 50 weeks
= 100000000 liters = 10 ha-m
5. Calculation of annual water requirement
for Industrial purpose
There will be production of vegetables,
flowers, and fruits. It can be sale directly or some
times it is to be preserved in cooling plants. Or some
times it may process. For that purpose canning
centers are required. Water requirement of various
small-scale industries will be assumed to be
=13 ha-m.
6. Assumption of annual water requirement
for Garden around the School = 5 ha-m
Thus the total annual water requirement will be
= 7+150+10+13+5 =185 ha-m
Available annual water from rainfall over 1000
hectare area and 600 mm annual rainfall will be
(From above table) = 210 ha-m
This is more than the annual water requirement of
a village under consideration.
Thus it is found that the water scarcity is not
natural, it is due to the mismanagement. Rainwater
