One of the best things about working in higher education is the unique work environment. Each
spring our graduates leave behind a campus culture they’ve helped shape and every fall a new
freshman class brings the promise of a new, different year.
Just as the campus is affected by the change in the student body, the campus culture changes as
new faculty and staff members make MissouriValley their home. These people not only contribute
to the success of the College, but they also help make the work fulfilling and enjoyable.
This year has been a particularly hectic year in the Institutional Advancement office. We’ve experienced
changes to our office culture as members of our staff have moved on to new adventures.
While we wish them the best of luck we begin to move forward in creating a new office environment,
a new culture.
That being said I am excited to announce that April DeGraff ’09 has taken over as director of marketing
and media relations. April has worked in the institutional advancement office for three years,
working closely with the previous marketing director. She will continue the great work being done in that department.
Jennifer Hiller was hired as the alumni relations director. Jennifer has experience in higher education with her most recent position being assistant
director of alumni relations at Culver-Stockton College.
I’m excited to bring in new, fresh ideas and perspectives, and to continue to serve MissouriValley College.
NEWS:
George Brown was appointed
president of the Alumni
Association in January. Brown, a
two-year member of the Alumni
Advisory Board, is a 1973 graduate
of Missouri Valley College. While
attending MVC Brown was a
member of the golf team.
George’s love of golf is evident
throughout his life’s endeavors.
He served as the golf course
superintendent at the Centralia
Country Club for seven years, and the director of Parks
and Recreation for the City of Marshall for eight years.
George has owned a swimming pool construction
company for 26 years.
In 2007 George and his wife Nancy purchased Stone
the finest destination for golf in Marshall. The course
features 9 holes of links-style play spread across tees
and fairways that boast a unique mixture of bluegrass
and ryegrass. The Club also hosts members and guests
at its semi-private facility in the restaurant, swimming
Missouri Valley College welcomed 196 individuals into
the ranks of alumni at its commencement ceremonies
on May 5 at Gregg-Mitchell Field on the MVC campus.
The 2012 graduating class is the 123 rd class to graduate from MVC.
Including December 2011 and summer 2012 graduates, MVC has
conferred 9,331 degrees since 1889.
Edward “Mickey” Burns, a 1969 Missouri Valley College
alumnus, television host, and founder and president of Quest
Media Entertainment, gave the 2012 Commencement address.
Since the creation of Profiles in 1999, Burns has hosted and
produced over 300 episodes on the celebrity interview program.
The program is aired in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Profiles guests have included Joe Montana, Dr. Maya Angelou,
Joan Rivers, Danny Glover, Isaac Hayes, Joan Collins, Mario
Lopez, Sally Struthers, Kinky Friedman, George Foreman, Billy
Ray Cyrus, Mary Wilson, and more.
Three years after the debut of Profiles, the program became
syndicated in other countries, including Japan, and the U.S. Virgin
Islands. In 2003 the show was acquired by New York City’s
official television network, NYC TV. Profiles was selected as
a 2009, 2010, and 2011 Telly Award winner. The Telly Awards
honor outstanding television programs internationally. Profiles
is the 24 th most aired interview program nationwide.
In 2006, upon celebrating the program’s 100 th episode
milestone, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg wrote;
“Over the past three years, your exemplary program has offered
New Yorkers 100 opportunities to learn more about the long line
of luminaries who have made our great city the entertainment
capital of the world.”
“I was so pleased to have Mickey back on our campus,” MVC
President Bonnie Humphrey said. “Even though he is in the
heart of New York City, he proudly wears his Missouri Valley
College ring every day. “Mickey’s professional accomplishments
are very impressive, and he has a great story to share with our
graduates.”
Burns found his way to MVC in 1965 from New Dorp High
School in Staten Island, N.Y. At MVC Burns was a three-year
football starter at tailback and a three-year starter for the
baseball team.
“Thomas Wolfe wrote ‘You can’t go home again,’ but he was
wrong, for indeed you can, and indeed I am,” Burns said. “I
am thrilled and honored to have been selected as the keynote
speaker for my alma mater’s 2012 graduation ceremonies.
3
Because of the education I received at Missouri Valley, I was
able to carve out not just one, but two successful careers – first
as an educator, and then as a television host and producer. I am
just so excited to be able to share with the graduating students
what a special place it was for me, and continues to be.”
Burns earned his degree in physical education at MVC and
went on to earn his master’s degree in education from the
University of Central Missouri in 1970. He then headed back to
New York City where he was a successful teacher and coach.
Burns entered the broadcast industry in the 1980s. During
the 1990s Burns began working in front of the camera as a
reporter and host for several television programs that included
Special Edition, Island View, and Staten Island Live. During the
1990s, Burns served as a reporter for Election Night coverage
for Time Warner Cable.
In 1996 Burns founded Quest Media Entertainment Inc.,
a television production company that produces television
programs, television commercials, corporate promotional
videos, and event filming.
Burns was honored as the 2008 MVC Outstanding Alumni
Award winner. He was presented with an honorary doctorate of
humane letters at commencement.
Reverend Pam Sebastian, MVC Campus Chaplain, addressed
seniors at the baccalaureate ceremony.
Dr. Sharon Weiser, chief academic officer, presented two
students with the Charles L. Bacon Distinguished Service Award.
The peer-voted award is given annually to a senior man and
woman, who have demonstrated the qualities exhibited by Mr.
Bacon during his distinguished career as an attorney, active
community supporter, and 51-year member of the College’s
board of trustees. Mr. Bacon was a 1930 MVC alumnus, and his
son, Bud, currently serves on the MVC board of trustees.
Devon Wade, a senior mass communications major from
Stone Mountain, Ga., was the 2012 male recipient of the Bacon
Award. While at MVC, Wade spent much time behind the
camera, computer, and microphone. He directed games for live
internet streaming, produced highlight segments for the Delta
website, worked at KMVC, and was the co-editor of the Delta
newspaper. Devon was also a resident assistant and an MVC
Scholar.
president’s cabinet spotlight
MVC has seen much change over the past 10 years since Dr. Bonnie Humphrey became President of Missouri Valley
College. Q & A with President Humphrey
What is the president’s cabinet?
The Cabinet is made up of individuals that lead various parts of
the institution. Admissions, student life, building and grounds,
finance, academics, athletics, alumni and strategic planning are
all areas represented on the Cabinet. Each person represents the
interest of the people that work in their area.
I have always believed in a team approach to leadership. Weekly
cabinet meetings give us the ability to take a comprehensive
look at issues facing the College. All of our votes carry the same
weight. We work on the idea of consensus. Members may
disagree on a topic, but we continue to work through the issue
until we have reached a consensus about the direction we should
take to resolve the issue. I think this approach helps us look fairly
at all departments and also builds ownership for our decisions
and ultimately the direction we decide on for the College. There
are always more things that need to be done than we have
budgeted to do; and so we have to sit down as a group and decide
which projects will positively impact the most students. Missouri
Valley College is a much stronger institution when all parties are
moving in the same direction.
Our maintenance crew is represented through Tom Fifer, who
also represents athletics, admissions and operations.
From housing to student activities to discipline, our students
are represented by Heath Morgan, who is the director of student
affairs.
The technical part of curricular changes, graduation, credits—
that’s Marsha Lashley, our registrar. Marsha also brings a great
historical perspective.
The whole academic side of the house is Sharon Weiser, our vice
president of academic affairs. She represents the faculty, our
academic programs, and more.
Marilyn Belwood brings the aspect of institutional effectiveness
and the reporting standards we have to have for the Higher
Learning Commission.
Eric Sappington, vice president of institutional advancement,
oversees our alumni, college relations, and giving in order to
advance the College.
Greg Silvey, our chief financial officer, takes care of all of the
financial aspects of the college—financial operations, financial
strategic planning, and future projections.
How does the cabinet work with the board of trustees?
The cabinet and I work to keep our board of trustees engaged.
The Board does not oversee the day-to-day operations of the
College, but certain changes require its approval. To ensure
the Cabinet and the board of trustees have a good working
relationship, each member of our executive board along with a
subcommittee they chair works closely with a Cabinet member
10
liaison. Our job as cabinet members is to keep that liaison aware of
what’s going on and educate them so that the board understands the
nuts and bolts of our everyday work. The executive board members
report to the full board in order to keep them knowledgeable of
issues affecting the institution, and then the full board makes
decisions regarding governing policies.
The College has done a lot with the mission over the past few
years--why is that important?
Every decision we make in Cabinet and in the Board is based on
what’s best for the students and what will support the College’s
mission. Every decision we make must support the mission. Our
mission is a formalization of where we want to go. It’s like a road map
for us that gives us check off points for where we want to go. Our
goal is to give access and affordability to students who want to get
a college education. We don’t want to be the most highly selective,
elitist institution because historically we have given students from
all backgrounds the opportunity to get an education. We want to
select students that can succeed. We are not an open enrollment
institution which means anyone can get in. We do have admissions
requirements, so it is a balance of opportunity, desire and ability.
How is MVC preparing for the upcoming accreditation visit from
the Higher Learning Commission?
We’re doing a lot of things to prepare for the HLC visit, and we have
been doing them for a few years now. You know, an accreditation
visit should only be a validation of the work that you are doing. You
should not be scrambling to do new work to meet accreditation
because it’s all about having the procedures in place to support your
students, treat your faculty and staff correctly, and plan for the future.
We are doing great work here. We know what we’re doing, we know
how to do it and we know where we want to go. We need them to
come in to see that. So I’m looking forward to the visit.
You’ve seen a lot of people give back--how does that make you
feel?
Well, it’s humbling. It’s very humbling to see them give back their
money and their time to their alma mater, but it also makes you
see how important it is. I’ve got all kinds of quotes from alumni
who have been out for a very long time and are very successful.
“MVC is the backlight for all I have accomplished in my life.” “I’ve
worn my ring proudly since the day I graduated.” “Everything I’ve
accomplished in my life, I have done so because of the education
that I received there.” “I have dined with royalty and have stayed in
fabulous places all over the world, but if I could go back and do over
four years of my life, it would be my four years at Missouri Valley
College.” Meeting with alums of the College is a great part of my job.
What makes MVC...well, MVC?
It’s diversity. Our family atmosphere, close-knit. Our tradition
and legacy. Our strength is our personalized education. The great
education that students receive here to serve as a platform for the
rest of their lives. Our extracurricular actives—our athletics, student
organizations, and theatre and music groups—are top notch. Our
students have an excellent opportunity to be involved. We are truly
an institution where opportunity, desire and ability meet. Students
from small towns can excel here--students from big cities can excel
here; Missouri Valley truly is a wonderful place.
What challenges do you think the College faces?
Our rural setting is sometimes challenging although it is also
one of our strengths. We miss out on a lot of grant opportunities
because we do not have close proximity to urban areas. We’re close
to Kansas City, but hardly close enough to get into their grant
funding opportunities. Getting media coverage in that area is also
challenging. Very honestly, it’s a challenge that we have a small
endowment. It’s also a challenge for us to reconnect with more
people, but we have been very diligent in trying to get more and
more people back to MVC. Whether it’s at a social in their area,
giving back financially, or physically being back on campus, we’re
proud of the efforts we’ve made in reconnecting with our alumni and
friends.
What are you most proud of during your tenure as president thus
far?
There are a number of things I am proud of. I’m extremely proud
of the growth in students and the addition of academic programs—
several undergraduate degrees like nursing, the first graduate
program in community counseling, and our first online degrees. I’m
proud of our renovations and new buildings we’ve added. I’m proud
of our great record of academic accreditation recently. I’m proud of
the relationship we’ve continued and strengthened in Marshall. I’m
perhaps most proud that my daughter, son-in-law and son received
great educations and all have really good jobs because of their
preparation at MVC.
I’m pleased with the progress we’ve had on the “Your Valley, My
Valley, MissOURi Valley” campaign for the student activity center.
We’re over 80 percent toward our goal (at the time of this interview)
of $6.5 million. The Student Activity Center will help continue
the transformation of this institution. It will be a recruiting tool, a
retention tool, and a showcase for us.
What’s next for President Humphrey and MVC?
I have a very long list of things that I want to accomplish.
Our Maastricht Institute of Entrepreneurship has been a tremendous
asset to our campus. I would like to start another speaker series or
Institute –one that would bring back alums and friends.
I want to continue to build endowed scholarships.
I’m excited about our honors program that Dr. Weiser has started
and I want to see that grow and get more students in that program.
I want to do some work to Young Hall and the Morrison Fine Arts
building. And I want to continue the beautification of campus. I’d
like to get another housing village up on campus as our Viking
Village has proven to be a very popular addition to our residence hall
opportunities.
I’d love to one day see a track and other additions and renovations to
our athletic facilities.
And I want to continue our work in reconnecting with our alumni
and friends.
I had a long list when I started and I am so glad to see many of those
things checked off. I am so pleased that I have the support of the
Board, my cabinet, our alumni and friends, the faculty and staff, and
our students. We have gotten some things done and I know with
our continued hard work, strategic planning, and dedication, we can
cross off many more items on that list.
There are a lot of things that Missouri Valley College needs and
deserves. We must all remember that improvements to the College’s
facilities, finances and academic reputation only validates the quality
of our degrees--past, present and future. There is a lot of really good
work still to accomplish at Missouri Valley. I may be here for a while!

MVC MEETS MABEE FOUNDATION CHALLENGE
& ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL NAME OF STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTER
The Missouri Valley College board of trustees celebrated
Homecoming 2012 with two distinct resolutions. First, the board
of trustees announced that the requirements for the Mabee
Foundation Challenge had been met. In addition, MVC held a
naming ceremony on Oct. 12 to officially name the object of the
capital campaign— a 37,000 square foot student activity center,
The Malcolm Center for Student Life.
In October 2011 the Mabee Foundation awarded MVC a
challenge grant of $750,000. To secure the Mabee grant, the
College had 12 months to raise an additional $1.4 million. The
College launched the public phase of the $6.5 million campaign,
the “Your Valley, My Valley, MissOURi Valley” campaign, for the
student activity center at last year’s Homecoming. The Mabee
Challenge is an integral part of the campaign, and as of Oct. 16,
total funds raised were over $5.2 million.
“It is not often in an institution’s history that alumni and friends
have this type of opportunity to step forward to support such a
potentially transformational campus facility,” said MVC President
Bonnie Humphrey. “As our student population has grown, there
has been an increased need for this specially designed facility,
which will enhance the student life environment and provide
space for student social engagement.”
The building’s namesake, Dr. William Malcolm, Sr., was a
professor of philosophy at MVC from 1930‐42. Malcolm’s son,
William Malcolm, Jr., a 1942 MVC graduate, and his wife,
Geneva, gave the initial $1 million gift to be used as a catalyst for
building the student activity center. The Malcolm’s, along with
several of their family members, were on campus for the naming
ceremony.
According to Humphrey, the Malcolm Center for Student Life,
which will be located east of Young Hall, promises to provide
renewed excitement and commitment to the educational
principles and values that make MVC a unique institution
of higher learning. The 37,000 sq. ft. facility is dedicated to
recreation, health, and fitness. Plans also include versatile space to
be used for both large banquets and student conferences such as
the Maastricht
Institute of Entrepreneurship. Additionally, the facility will
contain a coffee house, meeting rooms, and a student lounge with
wireless internet access for students, their families, and guests at
annual report
In 2012 the Missouri Valley College football
team put together one of the best seasons
in the program’s history. The Vikings
entered the season with high expectations
as the defending Heart of America Athletic
Conference champions.
MVC started the 2012 season ranked No.
9 in NAIA football and on the road at
McPherson (Kan.) College. The Vikings
were able to hold off the Bulldogs in a 27-
13 win; the 14-point margin of victory
would be as close as any team would get
to the Vikings during the regular season.
From there, MVC won a crucial road game
over No. 5 MidAmerica Nazarene University
41-7. The win not only gave the Vikings
a leg up on the HAAC race, but sent
a message to the rest of the conference that
the Vikings were going to be the team to
beat.
The Viking’s home-opener gave the Family
Weekend crowd a worthy performance
against Avila University. The Vikings
stormed out to a 48-0 halftime lead before
eventually cruising to a 55-6 victory.
season the Vikings jumped to No. 5 in the
National rankings, setting up a top ten
showdown with No. 9 Baker University
in game four. Despite the close rankings,
the Vikings took control of the game early
building up a 21-3 halftime
lead before collecting their
second victory over a top
ten team in the 31-17 win.
“
Following the Baker win,
the Vikings put together
a four game stretch in the
middle of the season that
saw the team win games
by an average score of 49-
13. The Vikings dominated
Culver-Stockton College in
a 47-7 win, and then beat No. 12 Benedictine
College on Homecoming 42-26. The
Vikings then played at Graceland University
and came away with a 39-7 victory and
stormed past Peru State College 67-13.
Even with their record moving to 8-0 overall
and 7-0 in HAAC play, to secure the
HAAC championship the Vikings needed
one more victory on the road over a ranked
opponent. The Vikings traveled to No. 15
Evangel University. A win would
give MVC its second-straight conference
title, but a loss would drop the Vikings into
a tie with the Crusaders. Early on, the Vikings
found themselves in an unfamiliar
position, trailing the opponent. Evangel
took a 7-0 lead early in the
first quarter. Despite the
early deficit, the Vikings
stormed back and took a
21-14 halftime lead before
eventually pulling away for
a 35-21 win. The victory
gave MVC the program’s
12 HAAC regular season
championship.
Following the big win
over Evangel, the Vikings
jumped up to their highest National ranking
of the season at No. 2, and needed a
win over Central Methodist University on
Senior Day to cap off the second undefeated
regular season under Head Coach
Paul Troth. CMU proved to to be a tough
opponent and made MVC work to cap the
season off with a victory. The Vikings led
by just one point at halftime, but were able
to come away with a 25-6 win, giving MVC
a perfect 10-0 record.

The win also allowed the Vikings to have
the No. 2 ranked team in the NAIA.
Hosting their fourth playoff game under
Head Coach Paul Troth, the Vikings
welcomed in No. 15 Ottawa (Kan.)
University to Gregg-Mitchell Field for the
opening round of the 2012 NAIA Football
Championship Series. In one of the
better games the team played all
season, the Vikings had very little
trouble with Ottawa coming away
with a 56-21 victory. The 56 points
and the 35-point margin of victory
were both the largest of any 2012
NAIA Football Championship Series
game.
The NAIA Championship Series
quarterfinal game played at Gregg-
Mitchell Field proved to be an
exciting one as the Vikings hosted No.
18 Bethel (Tenn.) University. After
an MVC first quarter touchdown, neither
team could get much going offensively
until midway through the fourth quarter.
The Vikings were able to extend their lead
to 10-0 after a field goal. Bethel attempted
to make a comeback after a late fourth
quarter touchdown, but MVC held on for
a 10-7 win and an appearance in the NAIA
Championship Series semifinals.
For the first time in school history MVC
hosted a semifinal matchup bringing in
No. 5 Marian (Ind.) University for one of
the most entertaining games of the season.
The Vikings led 10-9 at halftime and built
their lead up to 17-9 early in the third
quarter. Despite the lead, Marian was able
to come from behind and tie the game up at
17-17 late in the fourth quarter. An MVC
turnover allowed Marian one last chance
to win the game in regulation, which they
did by hitting a 51-yard field goal as time
expired. The heart breaking loss sent
Marian to the National championship
game and ended the Vikings’ season giving
them a 12-1 record.
The successful season meant a number
of honors and accolades were awarded
to the Vikings. Head Coach Paul Troth
was named the Heart of America Athletic
any HAAC school. Davis was also named
an AFCA all-American. He is the fifth
Viking football player to receive the honor
and his inclusion on the all-American team
marks the sixth straight year a Viking has
been selected.
“We had a special group
“They were fun to coach
and worked as hard
seniors have set the bar
To cap off the success
of 2012, the Vikings
signed a recruiting
total of 68 high school football players
have committed to play at Missouri Valley
