The Arts in America in the Eighteenth Century PAINTINGS COPLEY, John Singleton, 1737-1815 Born Boston; died London, England. Stepson of Peter Pelham, probably received his early instruction from him. At seventeen was recognized as a painter. Later established himself as a portrait painter in Boston. Instructed Charles Wilson Peale. In 1775 moved to London, and remained there the rest of his l<strong>if</strong>e. 1. Nathaniel Hurd. About 1765. Signed "J. S. C." lower left corner.
