SEYMOUR, Joseph H, fl. 1791-1822 In 1791 Seymour was employed by the printer Isaiah Thomas at Worcester, Massachusetts. Thomas' advertisement reads, "These plates were engraved in his Office in this town in 1791 . . • and the Editor doubts not but a proper allowance will be made for work engraved by an Artist who obtained his knowledge in this country, compared with that done by European Engravers who have settled in the United States". 66. John Hancock Esq., 1794. Engraving, Stauffer 2871. Published in January 1794 at the office of the Worcester Gazette and sold for "7 s. 6 d. each copy". Lent by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. TIEBOUT, Cornelius, before 1770-C.1830 Born New York (?); died Kentucky. Tiebout was the first American-born professional engraver to produce really meritorious work. He was descended from a Huguenot family that came to America from Holland. He learned engraving as an apprentice to a silversmith, and later studied in England where he learned the stipple method. By 1796 he was back in New York engraving and publishing prints, then moved to Philadelphia where he carried on a prosperous business; but he died in Kentucky in obscurity having lost money in speculation. 67.
