GRAPHIC FINE ART, BA
Short description of curriculum and study arrangement: Curriculum of the department of graphics includes two lines:
graphic fine art and print-graphics. The field of graphic fine art includes everything related to the development of
manual skills and creativity. Image processing and various possibilities of reproduction are studied more profoundly.
Photography and study of classical and modern manual printing techniques form great part. The programme also
traditionally related to a book. Since 1924 the department has its own printing workshop, where knowledge of all
phases of bookmaking and bookdesign has been taught and study projects have been printed in the form of unique
small books. Complex study of bookmaking will remain in the curriculum as the main field of print-graphics. This
will also guarantee practical skills for possible employment of the future graphic artists. Both lines are related in
curriculum, forming an integral educational packet. Print-graphics is divided into printmaking and book design.
Graphic fine art is oriented to free creation, compilation of exhibition projects, analysis, presentation of own creation
and acquirement of skills needed for an artist.
Location in curriculum: I and II semester
Objective: To treat problems of contemporary art.
understand.
Series of lectures meant for I year students introduces selection of works from 90s, from Estonia as well as
from elsewhere, and tries on the basis of specific works, through their detailed analysis, to show their
meaning, context and position on art map.
improve students’ orientation in art and provide basic concept apparatus for analysing and assessment of
contemporary art.
installation-specific problems, body and gender-specific art and psychoanalytical reference frames, design,
space and environment specificity in contemporary art. Lecture course also provides basic view of
institutional frames of contemporary art, e.g. students analyse different art journals and their aims.
