deaf -- the sound of a passing jet. Without sound,<br />
Claire’s lips say, “Hi.”<br />
“Hey,” says Jem, chewing. He surrenders his seat with a<br />
flourish -- SOUND RETURNING to Doug’s ears.<br />
I’m Claire.<br />
Jem.<br />
Jim?<br />
CLAIRE<br />
JEM<br />
CLAIRE<br />
JEM<br />
Jem. Just Jem.<br />
Claire nods, turning to Doug for help.<br />
JEM<br />
I’m a friend of this loser. He<br />
lives with me. Not with me,<br />
domestic partners. Above me, my<br />
house. Third floor of my house.<br />
Claire sits staring across the table at silent Doug.<br />
JEM<br />
Yeah, I saw the Avalanche parked<br />
around the corner.<br />
(to Doug)<br />
I told you that thing stands out.<br />
Doug flashes to Jem, realizes he has been following him.<br />
CLAIRE<br />
<strong>The</strong> Avalanche?<br />
JEM<br />
His truck. <strong>The</strong> work truck.<br />
Duggy’s quite the worker.<br />
CLAIRE<br />
You two have been friends a long<br />
time?<br />
JEM<br />
Like brothers. Since we were six.<br />
But he never breathed a word about<br />
you, the secrets with this one.<br />
Doug sees JEM’s TATTOO on his NECK: FIGHTING IRISH GUY<br />
WITH BAG OF MONEY JUST LIKE CLAIRE DESCRIBED.<br />
