BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ WELCOME
Welina me ke aloha and welcome to the 21st
annual Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival!
The working board of directors would like to extend
its thanks to Gina Caruso and her staff at the
Honolulu Academy of Arts, volunteers, film distributors
and sponsors who gave generously to ensure
that the festival continues its tradition of bringing
world-class films to Hawaii.
This year, a special effort was made to include
the trans community and college-aged audiences
in film selection. Several films this year illuminate
the adverse political environment faced by all LGBT
people in Hawaii. Highlighted features reflect the
unique nature of gay and lesbian relationships and
the challenges and joys that arise from relationship
dynamics that continually define themselves
against heterosexual norms. It is our hope that you
will make a special effort to see as many of the
films as possible as many hundreds of hours have
gone into selecting the films by a group of artists,
professionals, and those keenly aware of the issues
facing the queer community here.
In the next year, the Festival and Foundation will
continue their efforts to provide a place where the
queer people of Hawaii and their allies can come
ADAM BARAN ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival
is dedicated to the memory
of Adam Baran. Adam was one
of the world’s first video jockeys
who won one of Billboard Magazine’s
first Video Music Awards.
This was before there was MTV!
Honolulu was fortunate to be one
of the cities to have enjoyed the
together to tell their stories through various artistic
media. We are striving to raise the national and
international awareness of the Honolulu Rainbow
Film Festival and strengthen connections to other
film festivals.
We invite you to attend the gala celebration on
Sunday evening at the new Ka Restaurant &
Lounge where the awards ceremony will be held
and visiting celebrities will enjoy our company.
The board of directors would also like to extend its
gratitude to Jack Law for his intercessions and tireless
support of the festival. His support and the support
of other long-time board members and former
executive directors Connie Florez, Winston Welch,
Jeff Davis, and Jon Bryant are the reason why the
festival continues to thrive. The entirety of the organizing
and programming of the festival this year
was carried out on a volunteer basis, spearheaded
by President Richard Reese, Executive Director Kainoahemolele
Tabar, Programming Director Brent
Anbe and the board welcomes people who are
willing to contribute to the Festival and the ongoing
effort to raise awareness.
Enjoy the show.
video talents of Adam (along with
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and
New York). Unfortunately Adam
was one of the first who succumbed
to AIDS 22 years ago.
This dedication to Adam is a way
of honoring all of the talented
individuals whose lives were cut
short because of HIV and AIDS.

MINDY COHN
( A C T R E S S )
Mindy Cohn made her acting debut as the witty,
outspoken Eastland Academy student Natalie Green
in the hit comedy series “The Facts of Life.” She
was discovered while attending Westlake School
for Girls in Bel Air, California, when actress Charlotte
Rae and producer Norman Lear came to the school to
authenticate scripts for their new show. Ms. Rae was
so taken with the vivacious eighth grader she convinced
producers to create a role for her. Ms. Cohn remained
on the show for nine years, then traveled to Paris and
Australia with her co-stars to produce two successful
television movies based on the series.
Concurrently, with her role in “Facts,” Ms. Cohn played
“Rose Jenko” in Fox’s “21 Jump Street.” Other notable
television appearances included “Diff’rent Strokes,”
“Double Trouble,” “Charles in Charge,” “Dream On” and
“Suddenly Susan.”
In 1983, Ms. Cohn appeared in her first professional
stage performance in “Table Settings,” written and
directed by James Lapine and filmed for HBO Television.
The illustrious cast included Eileen Heckart, Stockard
Channing, Robert Klein, Peter Riegart, and Dinah
Manoff. She went on to make her feature film debut
in “The Boy Who Could Fly,” which co-starred Colleen
Dewhurst, Fred Gwynne and Fred Savage.
Ms. Cohn took a hiatus from her career to attend
university, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in
Cultural Anthropology. During this time, she studied
improvisation and scene work with Gary Austin, Harry
Mastergeorge, and Larry Moss.
In 1993, Ms. Cohn received a Dramalogue Award for her
performance in a production of “Catholic School Girls”
at the Globe Playhouse in Los Angeles. The following
year, she returned to television as “Mo Tucker” in the
NBC series, “The Second Half,” starring John Mendozza,
Wayne Knight and Jessica Lundy. In 1995, Ms. Cohn
and Alan Thicke co-hosted the radio show “Talkzone,”
which gave teens a venue to discuss pertinent issues
with their parents.
Ms. Cohn starred on the WB sitcom “The Help”
alongside Antonio Sabato, Jr. and Tori Spelling. She
also starred in the pilot “Virtually Casey” for the Disney
Channel and continues to be the voice of “Velma” in
the animated series “What’s New, Scooby Doo?” for
which she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award.
While continuing to have a successful voice over career,
she has starred feature films “Under the Gun,” “Alone
with a Stranger,” “Swing”, I Heart Huckabees” the
independent feature “Third Wish” working alongside
Armand Assante, Betty White and Sean Maguire and
the Daniel Waters feature “Sex & Death 101” opposite
Simon Baker and Winona Ryder. She can next be seen
as the star of “Violet Tendencies” to be released this
spring. Just back from Canada where she starred as
Florence Jenkins in the Peter Quilter play Glorious!,
Ms. Cohn currently resides in Los Angeles where she is
working towards a Masters Degree!

QUENTIN LEE
( D I R E C T O R , P R O D U C E R )
Quentin Lee was born in Hong Kong, immigrated to Montreal, Canada, and then went to study literature at
Berkeley and Yale, and film production/directing at UCLA. He began filmmaking as an experimental video maker
and his early shorts screened at over 20 film festivals both domestically and internationally. He has also published
a novel titled Dress Like a Boy based on his last year of college at Berkeley.
The People I’ve Slept With is his fourth feature. His first feature Shopping for Fangs premiered at Toronto Film
Festival as part of Perspective Canada in 1997. He is currently working on a graphic novel with artist John Hahn,
Campus Ghost Story, and a horror thriller, Rigor Mortis, to be shot in Hong Kong.
Deep down, the movie is about expelling conventional and suffocating values to be yourself, as wild as you may
be. It’s also about finding and forming alternative families in a modern world. Good girls can be sluts. Gays and
lesbians will get married. Humanity must triumph.

WILSON CRUZ
( A C T O R )
Already highly regarded as one of today’s most
talented young actors, Wilson Cruz is once again
making waves on stage, television, and the big
screen. This past winter, Cruz co-starred alongside
Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Anniston in He’s Just
Not That Into You for New Line Cinema. Last year he
starred in the independent feature Coffee Date, for
which he received critical praise and continued his
groundbreaking role as HIV positive Dr. Junito Vargas
on LOGO’s original series Noah’s Arc. Wilson also
returned to the stage to star in the 1st National tour
and West Coast premiere, at the Rubicon Theatre, of
the Jonathan Larson musical tick, tick…BOOM! This
past summer, Wilson was heard as the voice of Evan
Martinez in LOGO’s new animated series Rick and
Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in the World.
Cruz first won the hearts of audiences playing
‘Rickie’, a troubled, introspective teenager on the
critically acclaimed series, My So-Called Life. He again
earned fans and critical acclaim for his role of ‘Angel’
in RENT which he began at the Ahmanson Theatre
in LA and continued on Broadway. RENT became a
theatrical phenomenon, winning both the Tony and
Pulitzer Prize for Best Musical, while Wilson received
the Theatre LA Ovation Award and the Dramalogue
Award for his performance.
While theatre audiences enjoyed the opening
night of RENT, television audiences simultaneously
appreciated Wilson’s widely ranging talent, with
his dramatic and memorable guest appearance as a
tortured transvestite airing on a special Christmas
episode of David E. Kelley’s hit series, Ally McBeal.
Hot off the success of RENT, Cruz landed a series
regular role on the FOX hit drama Party of Five and
his character quickly became an integral part of
the show. Other television credits include guest
appearances on the highly rated NBC dramas ER
and The West Wing, the WB’s Related, TNT’s The
Closer, and CBS’s NCIS. In 2008, Cruz was featured
as a series regular on the premiere season of TNT’s
hit drama series, Raising the Bar and most recently
appeared on ABC’s Pushing Daisies.
Cruz’s television career easily translated to the big
screen with roles in such films as MGM’s sci-fi thriller
Supernova and Disney’s Nixon, directed by Oliver
Stone. He is also no stranger to the indie film world,
starring in such films as Johns and All Over Me; both
screened at the Sundance Film Festival and Joyride,
starring opposite Tobey Maguire. He also starred
in the cult hit Party Monster a hip, edgy story about
infamous party promoters with Macaulay Culkin and
Seth Green. Wilson has recently completed shooting
on several independent features Ode, The Green Flash,
The People I’ve Slept With, and Convincing Clooney.
City of Borders goes inside a vibrant underground sanctuary on the East/West border of the Holy City, where people of
opposing nationalities, religions, and sexual orientations create a community among people typically viewed as each
other’s “enemy.” City of Borders follows the daily lives of the Israeli bar owner and four Israeli and Palestinian patrons
as they navigate the minefield of politics, religion and discrimination to live and love openly. Set against the construction
of the separation wall between Israel and the Palestinian territories and the struggle for a gay pride parade in
Jerusalem, these four inter-woven stories reveal the contradictions and complexity of the struggle for acceptance.
