MONTENEGRO – Travel destination 2004/5
Montenegro (Crna Gora) is a small country
in southeastern Europe, Crna Gora is the
indigenous ap pellation and both names mean
"Black Mountain." (the name "Black mountain"
is due to the fact the mountains of the
area have always been covered in black pine
(pinusne gra)). By virtue of its location Montenegro
belongs to the Middle Mediterranean
re gion.
Montenegro is one of the few undiscovered
and undisturbed natural gems of Europe. It
is Europe in microcosm, the best that continent
has to offer in one tiny place gift wrapped by
the Adriatic and Sky. With Scandinavian
Fjords, Spanish Beaches and Swiss Alpine
pastures and peaks, a traveler can be skiing
in the morning and sunbathing by the sea in
the afternoon.
ZABLJAK – DURMITOR
The origin of the name “Durmitor” is not
cleared with any certainty. According to some
the origin of the name is romantic. Possibly
it is derived from the Latin word “ dormitorium”
i.e. from the Italian word “dormitorio”
or “DORMIRE” – meaning “sleeping” because,
according to legends the soldiers of the
roman legions, marching by, were asking “is
this Mountain sleeping?” Of course, there is
a far less romantic explanation, possibly much
closer to the truth that the name was given
by Celtic tribes, the Celtic: “dru-mi-tor”
meaning “water from the mountain”. In any
case the name was inherited by Slav tribes
coming into the territory.
Zabljak is the highest town in Montenegro
at 1450 meters above sea level. Above it, the
mountain of Durmitor looms with Bobotov
kuk, 2523 meters high. The mountain range
of Durmitor constitutes the area between the
canyons of Tara, Piva and Komarnica, and
the mountain Sinjajevina. The striking
difference in altitude between the canyons
and the uppermost parts of Durmitor at a
short distance of 2090 meters, is a dominant
feature of the plateau of Durmitor.
The area is famous for its glacial lakes, or
'mountain eyes'. The most well-known is the
Black Lake, covered with ice in the winter,
yet perfect for swimming in the summer.
Between the steep hillsides or hidden in the
green, thick foliage, are the majestic beauties:
Zmijinje, Barno, Riblje, Vrazje, Modro and
the other lakes.
As a consequence of these characteristics,
Durmitor is, together with canyons of Tara
and Susica, proclaimed a Na tional park and
has become a World Heritage Site, added to
UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1980.
There are a few ski-trails.The most attractive
ones are at Savin Kuk, Stuoc, and Javorovaca.
There are two cable cars, a ski lift, beginner
ski lift and ski service at Savin Kuk. The trail
is 3500m long. There is a shorter (2 630 m),
but more interesting trail at Stuoc. Javorovaca
is very convenient for tourists who like short
ski trails. It is 800m long. There are also trails
for cross country skiing, which are 3 to 12
km long. Which becomes interesting when
there are also around 50 mountain pikes
higher than 2000m to climb.
Hunting and fishing opportunities are available
to those that enjoy these sports while many
types of excursion on the Tara River can set
the pulse racing. Century-old earth erosion
has created 82km long canyon Tara, the
second largest canyon in the world after
Colorado. At some places, it is up to 1300m
deep.
In previous winters Zabljak became the centre
of the social calendar, famous for its hotels
and skiing. In recent years new guesthouses
and comfortable chalets offer good value. There
is a wealth of outdoor activities from canyoning
and rafting to skiing and trekking, it is a
wonderful place to spend time with plenty
to see and do at any time of the year.
