Show Me the Studies Echinamide and the Immune System More than 30 clinical studies have been done with echinacea preparations. Most of these studies involved the prevention and treatment of the common cold and used fresh-pressed juice from the above-ground (aerial) portion of the E. purpurea plant, along with 22 percent ethanol (for preservation). Unfortunately, this form of echinacea is probably not the most beneficial because it has lower concentrations of key immune enhancing. Furthermore, as previously stated, there was no standardization in the levels of active compounds for any of the echinacea products used in these studies. This fact makes analysis very difficult and very nearly invalidates the results. Nonetheless, numerous clinical studies have confirmed echinacea’s immune enhancing actions. Various echinacea extracts or products have shown results in general infectious conditions, influenza, colds, upper respiratory tract infections, urogenital infections, and other infectious conditions. 51
CHAPTER 4 IS THIS THE END OF THE COMMON COLD? Over the years, research results have been difficult to interpret because of the lack of quality control in preparations used. Simply stated, although most studies showed positive results, overall the results have been mixed. Some studies showed positive results in both preventing and treating the common cold, others showed little or no effect. 24-27 <strong>The</strong> reason for the mixed results is most likely due to the lack of consistency in the product being used. If the product, by chance, had sufficient levels of active compounds it would be effective. If not, then it would likely be no more effective than a placebo.
