instructed by Christ, and following His Divine insti<br />

tution, we dare, we presume to call Him by a most<br />

tender and affectionate title which otherwise we could<br />

not venture to use, namely, Father.<br />

Praeceptis salutaribus mon- Instructed iti, et divina institutione formati,<br />

audemus dicere.<br />

by Thy saving<br />

precepts, and following Thy<br />

divine institution, we presume<br />

Pater noster, qui es in<br />

coelis : sanctificetur nomen<br />

tuum : adveniat regnum tuum :<br />

to : say<br />

Our Father, who art in<br />

heaven, hallowed be Thy<br />

Name:<br />

fiat voluntas tua, sicut in Thy<br />

Thy kingdom come;<br />

will be done on earth as<br />

coelo, et in terra. Panem nos- it is in heaven. Give us this<br />

trum quotidianum da nobis day our daily bread : and forhodie<br />

: et dimitte nobis debita give us our trespasses, as we<br />

nostra, sicut et nos dimitti- forgive them that trespass<br />

mus debitoribus nostris. Et against us. And lead us not<br />

ne nos inducasintentationem. into temptation.<br />

R. Sed libera nos a malo. R. But deliver us from evil.<br />

The Priest says in a low voice :<br />

Amen. Amen.<br />

EXPLANATION <strong>OF</strong> <strong>THE</strong> OUR FA<strong>THE</strong>R.<br />

The Our Father is given by St. Matthew, in chapter<br />

vi., as a portion of the Sermon on the Mount. St. Luke<br />

gives it in chapter xi., as if it had been given for a<br />

second time and to a different audience. There is<br />

a slight variation between the form in St. Matthew and<br />

in St. Luke.<br />

In the first portion of the prayer we regard God as<br />

our end ; in the last three petitions we beg the removal<br />

of all obstacles to gaining that end.<br />

The invocation Father is to give us hope in God<br />

as first and foremost an affectionate Father who art
