Undergraduate Course and Program Development
The Undergraduate Program at The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is divided into two separate majors:
Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.
Electrical Engineering is a diversified profession concerned with the design and operation of the electrical devices and
systems required by our technological society. These can range from the smallest microdevice to the largest power generator.
Integrated circuits, computing, biomedical instrumentation, energy conversion, power generation and distribution, control
systems, microprocessors and communications are just some of the fields open to the electrical engineer. NJIT Electrical
Engineering (EE) students learn about devices and systems design and build upon this foundation when they select courses from
various specialty areas. Further in-depth engineering study integrates their knowledge in the planning and completion of a design
project. Our students are able to select from eight specialized areas with complementary laboratory courses in which hands-on
experience is emphasized.
32
Areas of Specialization
Communications Networks: The information revolution is built on an infrastructure of communications and computer networks.
This infrastructure has the potential to drastically change the way we live and work. The communication networks track focuses
on the analysis and design of wireless and wireline systems for information delivery.
Telecommunications: Wireless Telecommunications is rapidly becoming one of the most rapidly developing and exciting fields
in today’s technology. The Telecommunications track seeks to prepare individuals to contribute to the diverse fields of wireless
communications. The systems elective focuses on wireless personal communications systems, while other electives cover a wide
area of topics such as networks and optical communications.
Controls: The mechanism of feedback pervades nature, science, and technology. The curriculum in control teaches how
engineers can use the feedback mechanism to design systems for controlling a variety of dynamic processes, ranging from
spacecraft, aircraft, and automobile emission systems to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
Computer Systems: The computer system courses provide an in-depth study of computer system organization and computer
system design. Students study CPU design, control unit design, memory organization and I/O processing.
RF/Microwave and Fiber Optics: This area concentrates on radio frequency (rf) microwave and lightwave technologies at the
component and the system levels. Applications include communication systems (rf/microwave and fiber optics), remote sensing,
radar, sensors, etc.
Electronic and Photonic Devices: This area concentrates on newly emerging electronic and photonic technologies. This area
includes modeling and design tools for a wide variety of devices, VLSI circuits, and optoelectronic systems.
Bioelectronics Systems: This area concentrates on the bio-related areas in electrical engineering. The courses include medical
imaging and instrumentation; modeling, simulation, and control of biological systems; biological related sensors and electronic
systems.
Power Systems: Electric power and energy systems are gaining importance as the society realizes that to maintain our standard of
living, energy solutions must be found. The courses of this track survey the various energy resources and how to use them for the
generation of electrical energy and introduce issues related to modeling and economics of a power system. The laboratory
component includes electric power generation, connecting a generator to the grid as well as performing system studies using
industry programs.
33
The Computer Engineering major provides a solid foundation in both computer software and hardware, and then builds on
this knowledge through advanced technical tracks. Advanced courses give students broad knowledge in such areas as operating
systems, software engineering and computer architecture, while technical tracks in the senior year provide in-depth knowledge in
computer networking, advanced computer architecture or telecommunications. A strong laboratory sequence and capstone project
develop strong design skills. Areas of specialization include: Computer Communications, Advanced Computer Systems and
Bioelectronics.
Laboratories and Affiliated Research Centers
Instructional Laboratories
Computer Networking Laboratory (ECE 636)
Faculty: Dr. Nirwan Ansari
This lab provides students with hands-on training regarding the design,
troubleshooting, modeling and evaluation of computer networks. In
this course, students experiment in a real test-bed networking
environment, and learn about network design and troubleshooting
topics and tools such as: network addressing, Address Resolution
Protocol (ARP), basic troubleshooting tools (e.g. ping, ICMP), IP
routing (e.g., RIP), route discovery (e.g. traceroute), TCP and UDP, IP
fragmentation and many others. Student are introduced to network
modeling and simulation, and they have the opportunity to build some
simple networking models using the OPNET modeling tool and
perform simulations that help them evaluate their design approaches
and expected network performance.
Laboratory for Digital Signal Processing With Processing With Field Programmable Gate Arrays
(ECE 641)
Faculty: Dr. Ali Akansu
Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have become an industry
standard to implement popular digital signal processing (DSP) and
other algorithms in firmware for high performance data processing.
Many DSP algorithms previously implemented using applicationspecific
integrated circuits (ASICs) and programmable digital signal
processors (PDSPs) are now replaced by FPGAs. On the other hand
the DSP hardware design has been moving from graphical design tools
to hardware description language (HDL) that are led by Verilog and
VHDL and both of these languages seem to be well suited for DSP
with FPGA. This course introduces today’s FPGA technology, the
design tools for the state-of-the-art DSP algorithms and systems. It
then focuses on computer arithmetic including possible number
representations for DSP with FPGA like distributed arithmetic (DA)
and CORDIC algorithm. Finally, there is a set of DSP implementation
spanning from finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse
response (IIR) filters to wavelet processors with two-channel filter
banks.
Device and Material Characterization Laboratory (Silicon Nano Electronics)
Faculty: Dr. Durgamadhab Misra
The Device Characterization Laboratory has the ability to perform electrical characterizations on 4", 5" as well as 6"
wafers. It has the facilities which can perform characterizations such as:
Current-Voltage Characterization
Capacitance-Voltage Characterization [Both High Frequency and Quasistatic to determine Surface Potential (
s) and Interface State Density (D it)]
Time Dependent Dielectric Breakdown (TDDB) Measurements
Current, Voltage and Thermal Stress Measurements
Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (DLTS)
Magnetic Field Measurements
To complete the test device structure, typically a Schottky diode or a MOS Capacitor, metallization is performed in
Physical Vapor Deposition Unit (PDV) using shadow mask. PDV is advantageous as compared to sputtering which is
known to create surface damage during the deposition due to the bombardment of high energy ions on the contact. To
achieve proper ohmic contact, the devices are annealed in furnace in N 2 ambient at a suitable temperature to complete
the test device.
Current research topics are:
Reliability of High-K Dielectrics in nanoscale CMOS Devices. Reliability enhancement work is done by
deuterium implantation before gate oxide is grown. This involves extensive device characterization such as
gate oxide reliability, hot electron effect, interface states and low temperature characterization.
Electrical characteristics of thermally evaporated hafnium oxide
VLSI Design - The VLSI Design research includes (i) A Synthesizable VHDL Model of the Exact Solution
for Three-Dimensional Hyperbolic Positioning System; (ii) On-Chip Implementation of Deadlock Avoidance
in Wormhole Networks; and Transceiver design for sensors network
Integrated Sensors
The characterization and modeling of Three N-Type Implant Pinned Buried Photodetector using Charge
Transfer Model for Ultra High Frame Rate Burst Image Sensors
Remote monitoring of chemical sensors using local transceivers
ECE Senior Design Workshop
Senior Design Workshop
The semiannual ECE Senior Design Workshop brings
a synergy among students, faculty and industry experts
to help students gain an exciting and valuable
experience in engineering project design and
management that is closer to real-world situations. It
further provides industry participants an opportunity to
get to know students for future recruiting and
enhancement of public relations.
The Senior Design Workshop is a forum for seniors to
present their senior design projects. Held on
December 10, 2010 and May 3, 2011 this year’s
workshops included fifty-seven students comprising
nineteen teams presenting their design presentations.
This popular event was attended by students, faculty,
senior administration, alumni and industry
representatives. The workshop culminates a twosemester
program beginning with a faculty advisor
and an industry representative to guide each group of
students on the development, design, implementation
and design of Senior Design Projects. At the end of
the second semester, students present their work in the
form of posters and a brief speech. The presentations
and students are evaluated by the Senior Design
Workshop Evaluation Committee which was
composed of ECE faculty and industry participants.
Platinum, Gold and Silver prizes are awarded for first,
second and third place and all participants receive a
Certificate of Participation.
In Memoriam…
Dr. Timothy Chang
ECE and NJIT mourn the loss of Distinguished Professor Timothy N. Chang, who passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2011.
He was 52.
During his nearly 20 years at NJIT, Tim was honored for both his research in the lab and his teaching in the classroom in the area
of electrical and computer engineering. He was a leader of the Personalized Weapon Technology Program funded by the
National Institute for Justice, the US State Department, and the US Army to successfully develop handguns that are electronically
enabled to recognize authorized users and record all firing activities. More recently, and highly noteworthy, was his work in
biomedical applications, including his patent of the Smart Pin—a novel liquid dispensing system utilized in molecular biology
research that is capable of producing micron-size droplets without contacting the target surface.
In Fall 2010 Tim was promoted to Distinguished Professor and received NJIT's Excellence in Research Award during at the
university's Convocation ceremony. The holder of many patents, Tim received a Special Award at the 22nd Annual New Jersey
Dr. Arthur B. Glaser
ECE and NJIT mourn the loss of Dr. Arthur B. Glaser, University Lecturer in the ECE Department who passed away on Sunday,
November 21, 2010.
Dr. Glaser was born in the Bronx NY, went to the City College of New York for both his Bachelors and Masters in Electrical
Engineering and completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. After graduation he joined Bell
Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, where he worked for over thirty years. Dr. Glaser brought with him the accumulation of three
decades of knowledge in circuit design, three patents, and teaching experience gained from both Rutgers and Columbia
Universities when he joined NJIT in 2002 as a Special Lecturer.
Dr. Glaser loved to teach. He was often assigned courses at the 200 level of ECE, and worked hard to provide the foundation
upon which the students would build for a successful career. He loved teaching upper level courses as well, where his expertise
in chip design was allowed to shine. A man of humility, few knew he wrote a book that became a classic on the subject of
Integrated Circuit Engineering. He would often be seen working long hours grading exam papers or providing help to students.
Art had many friends in the Department. He was a gentleman who was always soft spoken and polite. He will be sorely missed.
